MBNA Rewards Mastercards have been completely revamped, and the information here no longer applies. You can see what the updated cards have to offer here.

Once again, much of the Canadian credit card world is left feeling frustrated and on the hunt for a new credit card.

The well-loved MBNA Rewards program, which was one of the most flexible programs on the market, and the two credit cards that earn these rewards are all going through some changes in the coming months.

Our #1 pick for flat 2% cash back rewards:

MBNA Rewards redemption options

Currently, MBNA Rewards can be redeemed in a number of different ways:

  • travel,
  • cash,
  • merchandise, and
  • gift cards.

One of the most notable things about these points is that you’d get the same redemption value whether you were redeeming for travel or for cash.

100 points = $1 of travel or cash

However, MBNA has announced that starting February 1, 2019, the redemption value for cash is decreasing.

120 points = $1 of cash for MBNA World Elite Mastercard holders

and

200 points = $1 of cash for MBNA Mastercard holders

The good news is that the redemption rate for travel is staying the same. That means if you normally use your points to travel, you shouldn’t notice any difference. If not, you could always start doing that now to preserve the 2% return on spending you’ve likely become accustomed to.

That, unfortunately, is about to change.

Change 1: The annual fee

On September 1, 2018, the annual fee will increase from $89 to $120.

If nothing else was changing, I’m sure this would be an adjustment most of us could stomach.

But with the change in redemption points as well, it’s enough to have many people shopping around for a new card if what they want most are cash rewards.

Change 2: The cash redemption minimum

One really nice thing about the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard is that you can enjoy your cash back rewards more than once a year (unlike many credit cards).

Once you had accumulated 5,000 points, MBNA would allow you to redeem these points for $50 cash back.

Now, however, you need to wait until you earn at least 6,000 points to enjoy your rewards.

Change 3: The balance transfer interest rate

Starting September 6, 2018, the standard interest rate on balance transfers will increase from 21.99% to 22.99%.

This should not have any effect on any low introductory balance transfer rates, and while this change isn’t going to affect everyone (because not everyone does balance transfers), it is still important to note.

Coming Changes Current New Effective Date
Annual Fee $89 $120 September 1, 2018
Standard Balance Transfer Rate 21.99% 22.99% September 6, 2018
Cash rewards redemption rates 100 points = $1 120 points = $1 February 1, 2019

Change 1: The cash redemption minimum

There are not many no fee cards on the market that will allow you to get your cash back more than once a year, and although the MBNA Rewards Mastercard will not hold your cash hostage for a whole year, the minimum required before redeeming your rewards has gone up.

Cardholders used to be able to redeem for cash rewards when they had accumulated 5,000 points. Now, however, you need double that – 10,000 points minimum.

Change 2: The balance transfer interest rate

The standard balance transfer interest rate will be changing just like the World Elite version – from 21.99% to 22.99%.

Change 3: The earn rate

This change is actually for the better.

With the MBNA Rewards Mastercard, there was a standard 1 point for every $1 spent on all purchases.

Starting February 1, 2019, however, there will be a multiplier on gas, grocery and restaurant purchases.

2 points for every $1 spent on gas, groceries and restaurant purchases up to $5,000 spent annually.

If you’re an MBNA Rewards Mastercard cardholder, this change could definitely make you consider keeping this card, especially if:

  • you tend to redeem your points for travel, and…
  • you spend approximately $5,000 a year in any of the 3 categories mentioned above.
Coming Changes Current New Effective Date
Standard Balance Transfer Rate 21.99% 22.99% September 6, 2018
Cash rewards redemption rates 100 points = $1 200 points = $1 February 1, 2019

Is the MBNA Rewards World Elite still worth it?

That being said, is the MBNA Rewards World Elite® Mastercard® card still worth it?

Without a doubt, the answer is yes.

For a flexible rewards card, a flat return rate of 2% for any type of travel purchase still can’t be beat. And while the annual fee has increased, it’s still on par with other premium travel and cash back cards.

Although it’s been devalued from a cash back perspective, it still provides a solid return of 1.67%.

And if you’re a Costco shopper, it’s still a great option if you want to earn flexible, guaranteed return travel rewards.

The exit plan

Any time a credit card you love changes for the worse, it’s never fun.

MBNA has given cardholders a pretty good run to help us decide if these cards are still worth it or if we want to get another one.

But our guess is many people are going to try to send MBNA a message by canceling their card.

And it seems like MBNA might agree since they are giving people an option to pull their points out before the cash redemption value changes.

From September 1, 2018, to January 31, 2019, MBNA will be temporarily lowering the minimum points needed to redeem for cash rewards from 5,000 to 1,000. So if you’re under the 5,000 point minimum, but want to “get out,” there is your window.

We’ve already had a few people reach out to us to ask what we think the best cash back credit card will be when the MBNA devaluation goes through.

So, if you want to earn cash back, and don’t think the card is worth keeping, here are a few options to consider.

It doesn’t beat the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard for a high flat rate, but the BMO CashBack® World Elite®* Mastercard®* has plenty going for it. For starters, it has a great welcome bonus – earn 10% cash back in the first 3 months, until $260 has been accumulated. Afterwards, you’ll earn up to 5% cash back on all your purchases. But one area where this card is better than all the others discussed is when it comes to getting your rewards in your hands. You can start to redeem when you have as little as $1 spent. And, it comes with a total of 13 types of insurance, more than the other cards have as well.

wow, if scotiabank is 5* then BMO's cashback with ZERO fees must be 6*. The fact is, unless u want $1k all to your cashback card, the $120 fee just kills the deal. It's better to talk about the break even points of these cards to pay for their own fees.

Hi there, Both are great cards - but the 5% cashback you get is only good for the first three months, or up to $2,000 in purchases. To break even on the Scotia Momentum VI, you'd only need to spend $250 on groceries to break even on that annual fee (which is waived for the first year), and the 4% and 2% cashback sticks with you up until $25,000 in spending. We'll note to talk about the break-even points next time. Thanks!

Thanks for all the recommendations. The Amex shouldn’t qualify as it’s not accepted at a lot of places. Sad to see the changes, first the CIBC WE master card, and now WE MBNA. Very stupid and greedy of them in my opinioj. They have lost and keep loosing a lot of customers. We spend over 400,000k a year, so the cash back was nice, but with the new changes it’s a no longer the best card. Hopefully there would be a new alternative at 2% cash back with no conditions.

I agree the devaluations to the MBNA cards are a major let down. The reason we included the Amex card here is that even though it has limited acceptance, they still have a lot going for them that other credit card issuers don't provide, like no income requirements, making them easier to qualify for and available to more Canadians.

I had MBNA WE and Scotia Momentum to maximize my cash back. I have obtained Rogers WE and will cancel MBNA WE in next annual fee renewal. It works this way: Foreign currencies/Gas/Groceries - 4%, recurring/Rogers/Pharmacy - 2%, all others - 1.75% , annual fee: Scotia Momentum $99, Rogers WE $0

Is there a reason the Rogers World Elite Mastercard isn't suggested as an alternative? (https://creditcardgenius.ca/credit-cards/rogers-world-elite-mastercard) Its $0 annual fee and higher cash back rate (well, ever so slightly higher) seems to make it a clear winner. I did the math when I switched from the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite to MBNA, and MBNA was the clear winner because we didn't spend enough on gas/groceries to make up for the 1% rate on everything else. Getting 2% on everything with MBNA netted us a significant percent higher cash back at the end of the year, something like 30-50% if I remember correctly. So, the $0 fee for Rogers seems like the clear winner, especially since the Scotia Visa also carries a fee (and with 2 cards you're actually going to end up paying more than MBNA).

September 21, 2018
The Rogers is definitely a good card, especially if you're a Rogers customer and you don't mind calling in to have your rewards applied to your account. The only reason we didn't mention it here is because according to our algorithm the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite and the SimplyCash Preferred are the two closest comparisons (and currently the two best cash back cards in Canada: https://creditcardgenius.ca/best-credit-cards/cash-back ). You are correct, though, that if you do not spend a lot on gas and groceries, the Scotiabank is probably not the best choice for you.

It looks like MBNA is not offering the World Elite Card anymore - it is not shown on their web site if your browse through their cards - https://www.mbna.ca/credit-cards/overview/ Also, if you google MBNA Worlde Elite, you can find it, say here - https://www.mbna.ca/credit-cards/card-benefits/ but when you click on the World Elite link, you get an error. I also cannot find the Terms and Conditions Document for the World Elite Mastercard online - very strange

The new Cobalt card is pretty impressive when it comes to flexible rewards, especially if you spend a lot on grocery and restaurant purchases. While the Cobalt doesn't have the rare price protection insurance that the MBNA has, it's total tally is one higher than the MBNA card, and the annual fee is the same for both.

I couldn't care less about things like the balance transfer rate; all I care about is the increased annual fee and the decreased cash-back on the World Elite card. I would have had less of an issue if they increased the fee to $120 but left the points alone. Heck, I probably could have swallowed a $150 fee if they left the points alone. But raising the fee by 35% and reducing the cash-back benefit by 20%, that's absurd! Especially because this card doesn't have a lot of extra benefits such as comprehensive travel insurance; it's literally just a good cash-back card. Question on the travel benefits: I see that those are remaining the same (100 points is $1); are the travel prices any good when you compare them to places like Expedia? Do you still have access to the same low-fare sales that pop up on YVR Deals or Next Departure?

You still have not given us a clear alternative to MBNA Rewards card!! Let us compare apples to apples! The ones you have mentioned are all ANNUAL FEE cards. Having started using credit cards in 1975, beginning with the Bank of Montreal Master Charge (they did not have MasterCard then), I have never ever paid annual fees. And, I am not about to start now! After all is said and done, I would like a NO FEE MasterCard to go with my TD Aeroplan VISA card, which I am very happy with. I have not been paying an annual fee for that, either!

At a glance the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite Card seems to be the real deal. My question is though how can they manage to give 4% back on groceries and gas expenses, which are probably more than 80% of the expenses that somebody would normally charge on a credit card. Moreover, there is no cap on earnings. I thought that the bank would charge the merchant no more than 3% on any purchase, so how can Scotiabank give back to the cardholder 4% without losing money? The $99.00 annual fee is too low to cover that, forget about the bank making any profit on it. To me it looks like their credit card offer has no financial support. Maybe this is just a short term marketing strategy. Make an offer which is a no-brainer clearly the best on the market and get a large number of clients switching to you, then deteriorate the offer to the regular level on the market and then try to keep the clients. At that point most clients would probably remain with the bank as there would be no better offer to which to switch again.
Stephen Weyman

August 8, 2018
The Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite has been in market for many many years now without ever a reduction in benefits. It's possible they could reduce benefits, but I don't believe that they will. Some people may spend 80% on gas and groceries, but I expect it is closer to 30% of spending than 80% for most typical Canadians. At the 4% earn rate, they are likely losing money, but they make up for that at the 1% rate and on those customers that choose to carry a balance. Additionally, there is a cap on gas/groceries, it's just incredibly large at $25,000 annually. Most people would never hit that cap.

I got the bad news this week as well. I have had this card for just under a couple years and have had collected a couple of nice cheques on the cash a back. I have already ordered the American Express card with the 5% back for 6 month (max to $300) and the 2%. I will be using this card as much as possible to max out on the reward. I will monitor how many places don't take AE to determine if I should drop the MNBA card and go with a no fee MasterCard or stick with the MNBA as I will still get enough value to at least cover the annual fee....we do spend a lot at Costco so may still have some value to keep. Thanks for the great post. I hope MNBA monitors this and other sites so the hear loud and clear the pushback from customers. I think they are taking a bit of a risk with this move.

Bottom line for the new fees and cash back for the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard since they do not fully explain it: You used to get 2% Cash back to use the cash however you want. Now you will be getting 1.67%. You will continue to earn 2 MBNA points for every $1 spent except they will now be worth 1.67 cents versus 2 cents. This card used to cost $89 per year. It will now cost $120. You used to be able to cash out in 5000 point increments. Now they must be in 6000 point increments. (that shouldn't matter to most). Personally I plan to set myself a reminder on my calendar before February 1st, 2019 to call 1-888-876-6262 to close my account and to personally tell them why. PS: I briefly tried the Rogers Mastercard that others here mentioned but be aware that any "cash" earned MUST be spent on Rogers products.

As Pilatos mentioned, I also use this card at Costco, especially for fuel, where members get a decent discount, but they require MasterCard specifically. If I went with one of the VISA offerings as my main card, I would have to either get a no-fee MasterCard to use at Costco and not earn as many purchase points, or be spending another $250+/yr at other gas stations. That change alone would offset what I will be losing annually in redemption at 120 points, and the extra $30 in annual fee. The change is frustrating, but I will have to determine for myself whether the devaluation in points, and increase in annual fee would be offset by the inconvenience of having to switch to VISA or manage more than one card.

Both my MBNA Smart Cash rewards card and TrueLine low interest card have seen an increase of a full 2% of the basic interest rate over the last month. This is on top of the increase for balance transfers, and in case of the cashback rewards, a "reduction in base earn rate" as well. It used to be 1% on all purchases, now it is 0.5 ,except a few categories. Basically a double-whammy! A few minor cosmetic upgrades on a monthly spending cap to offset hikes is almost not worth it. Both accounts are closed, as a customer with excellent credit history I expect better from my lender. As a side note, there are probably "reasons" TD Bank is not considered the most successful Canadian Bank. I expect other banks to follow suit with rate increases.

I have been extremely fortunate to have this card for more than 10 years. I was previously a fee paying RBC Avion card holder and also had a second card, the Starwood Preferred AMEX that I used for work. The Starwood card program with MBNA was cancelled and in order to keep us as customers MBNA offered a new points MasterCard. The cool thing about this card is that it is a no fee World Elite MasterCard so both my wife and I use this card for free. It even gets better, for every dollar spent we get 2 points, on all purchases that can be redeemed for cash or travel. It didn't take long to figure out that this card was the best so I depleted my Avion points and started using the MasterCard as my primary. I really liked it because I was tired of the fee vs point remaining on my card game, if I didn't plan to travel with Avion before the points were used I'd be forced to pay another year of fees for 2 cards...Bottom line, I am unhappy with the changes since TD took over the card but I am feeling that I had a good run to date. I will be looking for a new card but I don't suspect that I will find a sweeter deal than the one that I had...

I was notified this week about the changes. I use this card almost exclusively for Costco, and I use the rewards to cover the card balance and offset the annual fee. By my calculations based on the new changes, I'm leaning forward to cancel this CC and get a new mastercard with Tangerine or CT triangle.

The Rogers new Cash back card is pretty good. 1.75% across the board and comes with an insurance package that MBNA doesn't offer. No annual fee for a world elite MasterCard. Also can use the card for travel and earn 1.5% cash back just make sure whatever you purchase doesn't get returned or you will be hit with the FX fees. the difference in .25% from the MBNA to Rogers card one has to spend 50,000 a year on the card just to break even with the MBNA annual fee, so the small difference of .25% is really more than offset with a zero annual fee.

I looked at the Rogers World Elite as an option (as I plan on switching when the MBNA changes take effect), but it seems that you can only redeem for Rogers products. Did I read that wrong? I don't have any services with Rogers, so this may not make sense for me.

If you're not a Rogers customer, like me, the only way to redeem your rewards is to ask them for a credit in your account, once a year, around December. That's what I've been told, cause it's not written anywhere... That's an inconvenience...

While Rogers does not promote the annual statement credit redemption option, it is clearly specified in the REWARDS PROGRAM TERMS AND CONDITIONS available on their website: https://www.rogersbank.com/en/legal "You may also redeem your Rewards in the form of an annual statement credit to your Account by calling Rogers Bank at 1 855 775-2265. You must request an annual statement credit for each year that you wish to receive it by December 1st of that year. Annual statement credits will be awarded in January of the following year..."

That works for me. I probably only redeem my MBNA rewards once per year anyway, so I can live with that. Sounds like this will be the card I'll be switching to once my MBNA is up for renewal in March (unless something better comes along between now and then). 1.75% is really good for a free card...and certainly better than the 2%/$120 fee that MBNA will be charging.

I agree that the new Rogers Mastercard is the current "best" choice. You get 1.75% on all purchases with no fee, for now. Problem is that , like Tangerine and MBNA, the product looks great at the beginning, but then deteriorates. The Amex card, although good on paper, is probably the least accepted of all the major credit cards. A lot of vendors do not accept Amex because of their fees and rules. Also, Costo Canada and No Frills only accept Mastercard, which makes the Rogers card more useful to many. All of the features listed above make the Rogers card the most viable option for me. The discounted Forex fee makes it a great all purpose (travel) card. Getting cash back as earned, rather than once a year (see Scotia Visa) is also a plus.

You don't get cash back as earned with Rogers Bob unless you are using it to pay for a Rogers product or service. Otherwise, you can only access it by calling once a year in November to manually request it. If you miss that window, you're stuck with no rewards for another full year.

Yeah, that is one of the best alternatives, for sure. Especially if you're looking for a Mastercard. The Tangerine Money-Back Mastercard is a good alternative as well if you're looking for another no-fee option. (And if you pair it with another card to maximize rewards).

This devaluation of points (I redeem as stmt credit) + increase in annual fee certainly compels me to shop around for a replacement card. As I already have both VISA and Amex cards that I'm happy with, any suggestions on an alternate M/Card with a 1.5%+ earn rate & perhaps lower annual fee? (It's really too bad MBNA is screwing with this product....)

If you're looking for a lower fee Mastercard, our vote would be for the Tangerine Money-Back Mastercard. This card will give you 2% cash back in up to 3 categories (although you will only get 0.5% outside of your chosen categories). So, if you have other credit cards in your wallet with a good return, this card will really help you maximize your rewards.

Changes to the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard were expected considered many competitive cards have devalued or been discontinued in the last couple years. The $89 annual fee was the lowest in Canada for a premium card. The cash redemption value is decreasing to 1.67% (120 points = $1) but you can still get 2% when redeeming for travel (100 points = $1). The min point redemption increase to 6000 is a minor inconvenience. The standard balance transfer interest rate increase is irrelevant (as no sane person does a BT at a standard interest rate). This is still a decent card but changes do make it more appealing to switch to the American Express SimplyCash Preferred or Rogers World Elite MasterCard for everyday spending. I have the no fee MBNA Rewards Mastercard which earns 1% (1 point per $) on all purchases. I have not been notified of any changes by MBNA nor have I seen anything posted online. The changes described above are similar to information I've seen posted elsewhere regarding the MBNA Travel Rewards Platinum Mastercard which is an old card no longer available to new applicants. Are you sure the changes described above are relevant for the MBNA Rewards Mastercard? MBNA is also devaluing the Smart Cash Platinum Plus MasterCard and Smart Cash Visa Infinite as of 9/1/2018 per the letter I received today. The base earn rate is changing from 1% to 0.5%. The 2% earn rate for gas and groceries stays the same while the monthly spending cap increases from $400 to $500.

As I mentioned in a previous post, with the fee of $120 factored in, the cashback rate is even lower than 1.67%. If a person charges $30,000 a year, the points earned would be 60,000. Using the new rate, this would produce cashback of $500 but after the fee of $120 is subtracted, the net cashback is $380. This produces a cashback rate of 380/30000 or 1.27%. With lower spending, the rate is even less: $20,000 produces a rate of 1.07%, $10,000 gives a rate of 0.47%. If a person charged only $5,000, the rate would be -0.73%, since the cashback would be $83.33 but the annual fee is $120 so there is a net loss of $36.67. There are definitely better cards out there now. I'm planning to use my no fee Tangerine card for 2% cashback on gas, groceries and recurring bills. For restaurants, the no-fee Costco MC pays 3% cashback. For everything else, my no fee Capital One Aspire Cash World Mastercard has a grandfathered rate of 1.5% cashback.

What about 350k spending per year? 700k points = 5833$ - 120$ = 5713$ / 350k = 1.63%

I just got my letter. I actually had a much better rewards plan than what you discussed. I've been getting 2 points for every dollar on all purchases, and I've been paying no annual fee. I was grandfathered years ago so I've been going on vacation every few years on redeemed cash from rewards points. My spending strategy was to make all purchases with the Mastercard. I just spoke to them and they are pretty unapologetic. Whatever happened to customer loyalty? Is there an obvious alternative card that I should start using?

As the article mentions, we are fans of the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite and the Amex SimplyCash Preferred. If you're looking for a Mastercard, we would suggest pairing the Tangerine Money-Back Mastercard with one of the above cards to really maximize your rewards.

I'll be going with the Momentum, thank you for the suggestions. The AMEX just isn't accepted in enough places to justify the annual fee though. I'll likely go with the Tangerine because it's free, but after the restaurants category the benefits of the other ones are deemed negligible by the Momentum. If only there was a retail category, or even travel (not just accommodations). I'll continue to monitor this site for another card that would provide more than 1% on all other purchases to complement the Momentum.

I have been a World Elite cardholder through several iterations of ownership. My annual fee was actually $0 so the $120 fee is a little hard to stomach. Earlier this year my Chase card went away (now have the Scotiabank Passport Visa) Any advice on how I can instantly step into a $26,000 credit card, if I say goodbye to this one?

I have an MBNA Rewards Mastercard, and having gotten the bad news in a letter last week, intend to stop using the card soon. I disagree that the earn rate change is actually for the better. The ``multiplier`` on gas, groceries and restaurant is offset by the devaluing of all points. Bottom line is that after the change: -- gas, groceries and restaurant purchases will get 1% back (same as now), though only up to the $5K limit. -- everything else only gets 0.5% cash back.

Thanks for writing in. We're not necessarily saying that the new multiplier offsets the reduced cash value, but simply that 2 points on gas, groceries and restaurant purchases are better than 1 point. And if you're using your points for travel, this is definitely for the better.

I have been taking a serious look at the Rogers WE MasterCard rather than the MBNA WE MasterCard. In February the value of MBNA points drops to 83% of their current value (120 points needed per dollar rather than the current 100 points) except when used to purchase travel. The first big Rogers plus is that there is no yearly fee - a saving of $120. There is a first-year bonus of $25. If that money ($120 + $25) was thought of as a top up of the 1.75% return they offer to 2% (current MBNA rate) that amount of money would raise the rate on $58 000. If you spend less, the rate of reward will be over 2%. Money spent on Rogers products/services receive 2%. Insurance is comparable. The main problem is that the money earned must be applied to Rogers bills. MBNA's reward in points is going to be 1.75%. Those points will be worth less (83% of current value) The combined effect is to lower the rate of return to 1.46%

If you do not have any Rogers accounts, you may cash out your points once annually, I believe it's in January, against your Master Card account balance. In addition to the 1.75% cash rebate on regular purchases, you also get 4% cash back on foreign exchange purchases, which offsets the "Forex" fee, plus 2% on Rogers account purchases (cable, cell phone internet, etc.). It also has lots of insurance coverage as well. Considering that the card is free, this is the best deal around right now.

The Rogers card certainly has an attractive earn rate. Only being able to easily apply your cash back to Rogers products and services is a big pain though like you say. In addition, the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite and Amex SimplyCash Preferred both have more perks and insurance coverage options and will eventually pay out more net rewards if you spend quite a lot on your credit card. That happens at around $3000 in monthly spending. Between $2000 and $3000, they are all really close together.
