CIBC, also know as Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, was once famous for their Aerogold credit cards when they had a near monopoly on Aeroplan.

With TD now in the picture and Aeroplan going through big changes in 2020, that's clearly no longer the case.

Today, they've opted to focus on their own Aventura line of cards that is based on the CIBC Rewards program. What you get are extremely flexible travel rewards that are particularly valuable when you choose to redeem them for flights (any seat, any airline). You can expect a 2%+ return on spending if you use their flight redemption chart strategically.

The Aerogold line of cards are still worth considering due to their Air Canada perks with the top card offering:

  • priority boarding,
  • priority check-in, and
  • your first checked bag free on all Air Canada flights.

You also get free passes to the Maple Leaf Lounge thrown in on a yearly basis. Not to mention Aeroplan miles remain quite valuable until 2020 and maybe afterwards as well.
