Fact Checked
Accuracy is important to us so this article has gone through a thorough 3-stage review process and fact-checked by our team.

Earning rewards points doesn’t count for much if you can’t use those points for what you really want. The CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite program lets you earn flexible rewards that can be used for a number of redemptions. They can be earned in a number of different ways.

But as you'll see, there's really only one way to use your points for top value. Here's what this card has to offer.

Earning CIBC Aventura rewards

So what will you actually be earning in terms of rewards?

Here's what you'll get on every purchase:

  • 2 points per $1 spent on travel booked through the CIBC Rewards Centre
  • 1.5 points per $1 spent on eligible gas, groceries, EV charging, and drugstores
  • 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases

The ability to earn up to 2 points per dollar spent is really beneficial, especially when those points are worth more than the standard 1 cent each. Because of the highly valuable and completely flexible flight rewards, Aventura points are worth up to 2.3 cents each.

At 1 point per $1 spent, this means you’ll achieve a 2.3% return on spending. But if you get 1.5 or 2 points per $1 spent, then your return jumps to an outstanding 3.5% or 4.6% respectively. A typical person with spending spread out across many areas can expect to achieve a return of about 2.77% when redeeming for high-value flights.

Redeeming your CIBC Aventura rewards

Although you do get the best bang for your buck when you redeem your points for flights, CIBC Aventura points are very flexible because they can be used for a number of different things:

  • flights on any airline (best value),
  • other types of travel,
  • merchandise,
  • gift cards,
  • one-of-a-kind activities,
  • financial services like investments, or even
  • as a statement credit to help pay down your balance.

The value of each of these options can be seen in the "Rewards" tab above.

But, the only way to get unmatched value from them is by using the Aventura Flight chart – you can get a value of up to 2.29 cents each on flight bookings. Every other reward option is worth 1 cent or less. You'll be sacrificing a lot of value, and if your goal is to get rewarded for things other than travel, there are other reward cards that will be better for you.

Here's a summary of all your options and what your points are worth for each one.

5 benefits to the CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite

There's more to this card than just the rewards – here are 5 other things to like about it.

1. Top-notch insurance package

Valuable rewards are nice, but as a top flexible travel credit card, it also comes standard with 12 different types of complimentary travel and purchase insurance. Check out the "Insurance Coverage" tab above for more information on that.

A couple of coverages stand out. Trip cancellation insurance is great to have in case something comes up last minute and you won't be able to go, meaning you can get a refund on any non-refundable trip plans.

And not many credit cards offer mobile device insurance. It's great coverage in case something happens to your mobile phone, especially considering how expensive they are these days.

2. Airport lounge access

Want to escape a busy airport while you're waiting for your flight? Airport lounge access can give you a relaxing place to wait with food and drinks to boot.

The CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite will give you a Visa Airport Companion membership and 4 free passes at over 1,200 airport lounges worldwide.

3. Nexus fee rebate

If you hated the crowds in an airport, you probably don't like the long lines and checks at security either. That's where a Nexus pass comes in. If you wanted to get rid of some of the hassle when travelling to the U.S., the Aventura Visa Infinite card has a unique benefit for you.

Every four years, you can get 1 rebate of $160 on a Nexus application fee charged to your CIBC card.

4. Visa Infinite benefits

And because this card is a Visa Infinite card, you are also given some nice perks and benefits through the Visa Infinite program:

  • Visa Infinite Concierge,
  • Visa Infinite Luxury Hotel Collection,
  • Visa Infinite Dining Series, as well as
  • access to exclusive events.

5. Excellent welcome bonus

Finally, there's also a top-notch welcome bonus.

You can earn up to 45,000 points as such:

  • 15,000 points after your first purchase, and
  • 30,000 points after spending $3,000 in the first 4 months.

Plus you also get an annual fee rebate in your first year.

2 downsides to the CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite

The CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite has a lot going for it, but here are a couple of things to keep in mind.

1. High income requirements

The annual fee is in-line with other premium credit cards at $139.

But that annual fee is coupled with high income requirements of either $60,000 personal or $100,000 household, which may put it out of reach for some.

2. Just fair rewards outside of the Aventura Flight Chart

The second downside is the rewards. Redeem for maximum value using the Aventura Flight Chart and you get amazing rewards.

Based on a typical $2,000 monthly spending, you're getting $638.91 in annual rewards – an excellent return on your spending.

But if you only redeem for travel through CIBC Rewards, you're down to $279 which falls in line with the best no annual fee credit cards out there.

Comparison to the CIBC Aventura Gold Visa

There's another Aventura credit card that's quite similar – the CIBC Aventura Gold Visa Card.

Here's the quick comparison.

These are almost identical cards.

If you don't meet standard Visa Infinite income requirements, the Gold Visa is an excellent backup choice. THe only thing you're giving up is a few insurance coverages. But you're still getting the same high value rewards and features.

Wow. I have had this card for years and hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on the card. Fast forward to now, and CIBC just randomly (for the second time) stopped approving purchases. I have spent two hours waiting to talk to someone for support. They apologized and stated that their back office has a huge backlog. Sorry about that. Now, the supervisor is going to call me back within 28 hours. Yeah right....it is Friday night at 4:55.

Travel booking site is terrible and I can never find flights that give the points value that is shown here. Stay away

Don’t do it. The travel agents/representatives they use are awful. They are not helpful at helping you to find the best usage of points. They don’t know anything about flights (I always have to find my own), and this time they booked my connecting flight incorrectly and are charging ME to have to fixed and I lost the money I spent on my seat. It was 100% their error, and I’m left holding the bill. I asked to escalate this, and they said their customer service standard is that managers will replay to me by email only in 4-5 WEEKS! Unreal. Get another travel rewards card. This one is not worth the hassle and loss of funds.

Worst card!

I have it

The thing is when I got lay off I had the insurance for that. I called them saying I got lay off and is there any benefit for it. They said when you had a job you paid everything on time so we can't do anything for you. I mean anyone can understand that when you have a job then you can easily pay your bills but when you don't have a job you cant pay.

When my flight and baggage got delayed, this credit card did not help me at all. I did not get a benefit of even 1$ from it. The process is very hard that no one can get claim easily.

So I don't suggest it.
