It hasn’t been a great couple of years for Air Miles.

They’ve slowly been losing partners, like Rona, the LCBO, and Rexall.

Their major partners have remained intact, however. But that’s all changing this year.

Sobeys dropping Air Miles and joining Scene+

Air Miles is set to lose arguably their biggest partner.

Sobeys’ parent company, Empire, is getting a 33.33% stake in Scene+, making them equal partners with Scene’s other owners – Scotiabank and Cineplex.

In fact, Empire isn’t paying anything for their share – they’re earning it by being able to expand the base of members participating in the program.

And as such, Sobeys and all the other stores under the Empire chain will be making the switch.

These stores include:

  • Safeway,
  • Foodland,
  • IGA,
  • FreshCo,
  • Needs,
  • Thrifty Foods,
  • Les Marchés Tradition,
  • Rachelle Béry and,
  • Lawtons Drugs.

All of these sores will be making the switch from Air Miles to Scene+.

That’s a lot to take in – here are a few initial questions you may have. You can see more details and comments from Scene+ owners here and here.

When will the change in rewards programs happen in stores?

The first biggie – when will the changeover actually commence?

For now, it’s looking like they’ll roll out the change for all the affected stores in Atlantic Canada first, starting in August 2022.

From there, they’ll gradually roll out the program to the rest of the country in early 2023.

How many Scene+ points will members earn at Sobeys stores?

As of now, it’s not been announced. None of the releases we read stated what you’ll earn for Scene+ points at Sobeys grocery stores.

To get an idea of what you could get, here’s what you earn at Cineplex theatres and Recipe Unlimited restaurants:

  • Cineplex Theatres – 5 points per $1 spent
  • Recipe Unlimited restaurants – 1 point per $3 spent.

We would obviously expect Sobeys stores to offer a similar level of rewards.

What about redeeming points at Sobeys stores?

Again, nothing has been said about redeeming points at Sobeys.

The typical redemption rate at Cineplex Theatres (for things that aren’t movie tickets) and restaurant partners is 500 points for $5 in savings.

We would also expect Sobeys to follow this.

And that’s all we know for now – we’ll follow up with more details once Sobeys and Scene+ releases it.

All about the Scene+ program

New to the Scene+ program? Here are the basics on what it offers.

The Scene program was initially launched as a joint venture between Scotiabank and Cineplex in 2007. In 2021, they rebranded the program to Scene+ and gave the program a bit of an overhaul.

Currently, here’s where you can earn points:

  • Cineplex Theatres,
  • Recipe Unlimited restaurants, which includes Swiss Chalet, Harveys, and East Side Marios,
  • Expedia’s Scene+ travel rewards portal,
  • Rakuten,
  • Scotiabank Scene+ credit cards, and
  • Scotiabank debit cards.

As to what you can use your points for? Here are the best ways you can use them.

The best option is by redeeming for free movie tickets at Cineplex Theatres. The value varies by the type of ticket purchased, but we give an overage value of 1.05 cents per point when redeeming points for free movie tickets.

You can also look at these options, all of which give a value of 1 cent per point:

  • travel through Expedia and Scene+,
  • other Cineplex products, and
  • free food at Recipe Unlimited restaurants.

There are a few other ways to use your points – here’s each one and what your points are worth.

So what do Scotiabank Scene+ credit cards have to offer? Here are their 3 best options for you to look at.

Your thoughts

It’s a big shakeup in the rewards program landscape. Air Miles is losing one of their major partners, and the Scene+ program is that much stronger.

For me, this probably marks the end of being a major Air Miles collector. I have an electric car and rarely get gas. And now I can’t earn Air Miles when getting groceries or going to a drugstore.

What are your thoughts on the changes?

Expect generous points? NOT! The base earn rate is 0 points per dollar spent - you read that correctly; you earn absolutely nothing (except on a very few overpriced items) This is undoubtedly the first time in history that a reward program was introduced that earns you nothing - well done Sobey's.

The big issue I have with this "New Program" is that I can't see any info on how many points I earn at Sobeys for every dollar spent. What are they hiding? Normally you can just goggle this, but all I get is how you can redeem or the benefits of a Scotiabank credit card, etc....nothing! and the last 3 times at Sobeys for small purchases...no points...what gives....guess just have to ask staff as must have missed the Big Opening Push when staff are there to answer questions. I picked up a couple brochures and still no answers to my above questions...Is it a big secret.? Suppose to be better than AirMiles..how do you compare, with this lack of info??

Hey Reed, At the time this article was published, Sobeys had not announced how many points you would earn per dollar spent. They do have some information on their website now regarding this, which you can check out here.

Airmiles are the only reason I still shop at Safeway. The local store is in poor repair and they have lousy store brands since Sobeys bought them. I use my airmiles to get appliances and electronics when I need them and I love the concierge option. Scene has always had lousy rewards if you aren’t into movie theatres or travel. I will just shop elsewhere.

I am soooo dissappointed that Sobeys made that choice. Although Sobeys was more expensive than most grocery stores I shopped there for the airmiles! With the airmiles I bought groceries, gas, numerous trips to Florida, Shark Robot, Ninja Dual air fryer, Ninja Grill, Fitbit, IPad, Cusinart Freezer unit, Steam mop, etc….many things I might not have bought myself if I had to pay cash for them…..I guess Sobeysis not interested in the approx $18,000.00 a year I spend on groceries and gas never mind that Lawton’s was also my pharmacy so more to loose there….I have no interest in movie passes and the few restaurants they name or not the ones I go to so GOODBYE Sobeys…hello Superstore.

In today's economy, with the cost of gas and groceries, my priority is gas in the car tank and food on table, NOT dinner and a movie!!! The value of points spent on a movie and dinner is better spent on groceries and feeding a family for days!!! My Optimum card is ready to go! Airmiles customers are loyal to the program, not loyal to Sobeys. I shop at Sobeys ONLY for the airmiles. Sobeys made a unilateral decision to leave airmiles without consulting the customer, without customer surveys, without customer opinions. Sobeys is telling the customer what the customer has to do. But guess what? It's the customer that supports your profits. You should have ASKED the customers opinions, not TOLD the customer!!! A hard slap in the face. Shame on you Sobeys!!! The day Sobeys drop airmiles is the day I drop Sobeys. Lawtons included.

as prices go up but income does not and seniors are on a fixed income this new scenes plus program wants people to use credit cards and go to movies and out to dinner . Are you nuts . thats plain stupid , at least with air miles you could use your points for food or gas . you just lost a loyal shopper. no freaking way am i signing up for scenes plus program

Hey Heidi, You're right, Air Miles is more flexible in terms of how you can redeem it compared to movie tickets and travel. Other options for Scene+ points are redeeming them for gift cards and prepaid cards, or converting them into statement credits.

Very disappointing for those in rural areas. Obviously they are not taking into consideration many do not like to go to a Theatre, travel and if they do eat out like to support local Restaurants not big chain Restaurants 45 minutes away. Local shopping should be encouraged which is why Air Miles made it more sensible for rural areas with Sobeys the only store close by.

Hey Angie, It is a good point, Air Miles could be redeemed like cash at some stores, which is more flexible compared to movie tickets and travel. With Scene+ points, there's an option of redeeming them for gift cards and prepaid cards, as well as converting them into statement credits. If you want, you can read more about it in our article How To Maximize The Scene+ Points Program.

Sobey's dumping Air Miles is an astonishingly bad, and thus surprising, decision. For most of us, this will be a matter of replacing something useful and flexible, with its opposite. I wonder what genius came up with that one?
