Buried inside the big news that BMO will be retiring the AIR MILES brand and creating Blue Rewards in its place is another major update: Shell is leaving the AIR MILES program.
Shell is joining its former AIR MILES partner Sobeys and teaming up with Scene+.
Alberta locations will be the first Shell stations to switch to Scene+ on March 3, 2026, with the rest of Canada following up on May 26, 2026.
There are also some special offers coming for anyone who has a Scotia or Tangerine card. These will take effect at the same time as the Scene+ rollout.

A new fuel rewards program – Scene+
Scene+ has been busy adding partners ever since Scotiabank merged the old SCENE and Scotia Rewards programs together.
With all these new partners, Scene+ can earn you rewards on a variety of different purchases:
- Groceries
- Entertainment
- Restaurants
- Home Improvement
And now, another big-time AIR MILES partner has switched over to Scene+, adding gas to the list
We'll probably never find out the reason for Shell leaving AIR MILES and not sticking around for Blue Rewards. But Shell did sign their most recent contract extension with AIR MILES before BMO took over, so this change may have been coming for a long time.
Earning Scene+ points at Shell stations
Shell’s FAQ has answers to most of our questions.
At Shell stations, you'll earn 1 Scene+ point per $1 spent on any grade of fuel, and 1 point per $1 spent in-store and on car washes.
Link your Scene+ account to Shell Go+ and use the Shell App to pay for fuel, and you'll get 10% bonus Scene+ points. You'll also earn double points if you purchase Shell V-Power NiTRO+ Premium.
You'll also be able to redeem your Scene+ points for fuel. It's the standard Scene+ redemption rate – 1,000 points to save $10.
Special offers for Scotiabank and Tangerine cards
If you have a Scotiabank or Tangerine credit or debit card, some special offers will be available.
Link your cards to your Shell Go+ account, and pay for fuel through the app, and you'll unlock instant fuel discounts. The actual amount isn't stated, but we would assume it will be between 2 – 3 cents per litre, which is the typical standard for these deals.
Shell's CAA savings aren't going away, and you'll be able to combine CAA, Scotiabank, and Scene+ offers together when you use the app.
What does this mean for Blue Rewards
BMO has done a lot with AIR MILES, basically overhauling the whole program and announcing its rebrand to Blue Rewards.
But this news is a bit of a head scratcher. Shell is by far the biggest nationwide partner AIR MILES has.
Blue Rewards seems to have retained Irving as a gas partner, but they're mostly limited to Atlantic Canada.
Here's a summary of the major gas chains in Canada and their loyalty programs.
- Petro-Canada – Petro-Points and Triangle Rewards
- Esso – PC Optimum
- Shell – Scene+
- Ultramar/Fas Gas/Chevron/Pioneer – Journie Rewards
Outside of Irving stations, Air Miles/Blue Rewards is shut out among the major gas retailers in Canada.
