The best cards to use for Shell gas are Scene+ credit cards, and the best of these is the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card. Now that BMO and Air Miles credit cards are changing, it's time to consider other cards to get the best discounts and rewards for Shell gas. Right now, Scene+ offers the best options.

All the top options are credit cards issued by Tangerine and Scotiabank, since Shell now has partnerships with both. Cardholders get an instant discount of 3 cents per litre as long as they link their qualifying credit card with Shell's mobile app.

If you don't feel like signing up for a Scene+, Scotiabank, or Tangerine credit card, you can still use any other high-earning gas credit card at Shell. These might even be a better option if you aren't necessarily loyal to Shell or any other specific gas chain.

Shell and Scene+ partnership

Albertans have already seen the new Shell partnership with Scene+ begin, but the rest of Canada switches over on May 26, 2026. This means Shell will no longer partner with Air Miles, BMO's loyalty rewards program.

Instead, Shell is joining Scotiabank's popular Scene+ rewards program. Scene+ is another free loyalty program that awards reward points for using a Scotiabank debit card or credit card, or for shopping with Scene+ partners. You can cash in points for travel, merchant discounts, gift cards, or statement credits.

When you link your Shell and Scene+ accounts, you'll earn 1 Scene+ point per litre and 1 point per $1 spent on Shell car washes and convenience store purchases. If you want to redeem your Scene+ points at Shell, you can put 1,000 points toward a $10 fuel, car wash, or convenience store discount.

Shell also announced a new partnership between Scene+ and Tangerine, giving Canadians another customizable rewards credit card.

Although Tangerine's original credit cards were all cash back cards, the new Tangerine Rewards World Elite Mastercard earns Scene+ points. But you can still choose your own spending categories. This means you can decide if you want to earn extra Scene+ points on groceries, entertainment, transportation, or 7 other areas.

Plus, since this card is a World Elite Mastercard, you'll enjoy great travel insurance, an annual bonus, and airport lounge access, along with a welcome bonus that more than pays for the card's annual fee.

Connect Scene+ in the Shell Go+ app

If you're already a member of Shell's free loyalty rewards program, Shell Go+, link your Scene+ number to the Shell app to earn a 10% bonus on Shell car wash and convenience store purchases. You'll also get 10% more points on your Shell fuel purchases, although this applies to the base offer, not to the price you pay for fuel.

Unfortunately, higher gas prices won't mean a bigger bonus, but that 10% bonus will certainly add up if you have a big tank. A 70-litre fuel tank, for instance, will earn 70 Scene+ points for a Scene+ member – and if this member links their account in the Shell Go+ app, they'll get an extra 7 points for filling this tank.

Double Scene+ points on Shell V-Power fuel

If you connect your Scene+ membership to the Shell Go+ app, you'll earn 2x the base points when buying V-Power diesel or V-Power NiTRO+. Again, the bonus applies to the number of litres you purchase, not the price you pay.

So, if you have a truck with a 150-litre diesel tank, you'll earn 300 Scene+ points every time you fill up.

Shell and Scotiabank partnership

Shell's new partnership with Scene+ is essentially a partnership with Scotiabank, since Scotiabank manages Scene+. It's no surprise that you can really maximize your fuel rewards if you're a Scotiabank credit cardholder and you link your account to Shell Go+.

Although any Scotiabank credit card that earns Scene+ points is eligible, use the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card to take full advantage of the Shell V-Power Scene+ bonus. This card includes a generous travel insurance package, a high rate of return on spending, and skips the foreign transaction fees when you're abroad.

Again, any Scotia card that earns Scene+ points is eligible, and by linking your memberships, you'll get:

Tangerine also has a new partnership with Shell, which means Tangerine credit cardholders can also benefit when fuelling up.

If you already have a Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card or Tangerine Money-Back World Mastercard, you're probably familiar with how you earn rewards – they allow you to choose 2 to 3 categories that earn accelerated 2% cash back. One of these categories is gas, which includes purchases at Shell.

However, we want to caution you about the advertised bonus rates of the Shell-Tangerine partnership:

This advertised opportunity of earning cash back is simply the standard 2% bonus cash back that Tangerine's cash back cards get when you select fuel as one of your bonus categories.
