For a top no annual fee card, that offers flexible cash back rewards and some premium perks to boot, the Tangerine World Mastercard is a card to take a look at.

It's very similar to the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card, but comes with some extra features.

Here's the full details on this unique credit card.

Earning cash back with the Tangerine World Mastercard

So how much cash do you earn with this card? Like Tangerine's other card, it uses a rare bonus category system that puts you in control of your earnings.

You get to choose 2 categories to earn 2% cash back in from a list of 10:

  • Gas,
  • Groceries,
  • Drugstores,
  • Recurring bills,
  • Hotels & motels,
  • Home improvement,
  • Furniture,
  • Restaurants,
  • Entertainment, and
  • Public transportation and parking.

Not only do you get to choose, but it even has some unique categories not found on other credit cards. You're also allowed to change them. Just note that it will take 90 days for the change to take effect. However, it will happen right away if it's your first time requesting a change.

Best of all, if you deposit your rewards in a free Tangerine Savings Account, you can choose an additional category to earn 2% cash back in, for a total of 3 bonus categories. All your rewards get paid out once per month.

All other purchases earn 0.5% cash back.

How much cash back can you earn if you get a 3rd category?

Well, first let’s look at a breakdown of how much cash back you earn if you only get 2 categories. Using our default $2,000 monthly spend, we've chosen groceries and recurring bills as our categories.

Tangerine credit card earnings with 2 2% categories

Now let's add a 3rd category (gas), and see how much more you can earn.

Tangerine credit card earnings with 3 2% categories

An extra $36 in rewards, just because you have a free Tangerine Savings account.

Decide you need to change your categories? No problem. You can change them any time you like – just note it will take 90 days for the changes to kick in. However, they will take effect right away if it's your first time changing them.

4 benefits to the Tangerine World Mastercard

What else does this card have to offer?

Here's a listing of the other key features of this card.

1. Balance transfer option

Have some existing credit card debt?

You can take advantage of the balance transfer promotion of 1.95% for the first 6 months, which could help you save a ton on interest charges.

Just note that if you transfer a balance to this card, that you don't use it to pay for any new purchases. All your payments will go to the balance that has the lowest interest rate, meaning that all your new purchases will accumulate high interest charges.

2. Insurance coverage

For a no fee card, it does come with some pretty great insurance coverages. You can view the details by clicking on the insurance tab above.

The mobile device insurance in particular catches our eye. It's a rare insurance coverage to begin with, and even rarer on no fee cards.

How does mobile device insurance work? Simply charge the full cost of your device to the card. Or, if the plan covers the cost of the device, then pay for your plan using the card.

You'll be covered for up to $1,000 for the cost of a new phone, for a maximum coverage length of 2 years. The actual coverage amount is based on the price of your actual phone. However, every month the payout is subject to depreciation of 2%.

You can learn more about mobile device insurance here.

3. World Mastercard benefits

As a World Mastercard, you'll get access to some special benefits provided by Mastercard.

They are:

  • Access Mastercard Priceless cities, and
  • Mastercard World Experiences.

What are Mastercard Priceless cities? It's a program that will allow you to choose from a wide variety of once-in-a-lifetime experiences, in cities all around the world.

Mastercard World Experiences will give you preferred access to all kinds of valuable offers and complimentary upgrades.

You can learn more about these benefits here.

4. Airport lounge access

Finally, if you want to relax before your flight, you can access airport lounges as part of Mastercard Travel Pass.

There's over 1,000 airport lounges located around the world you'll be able to access. Just keep in mind you'll still have to pay US$32 for every visit.

2 downsides to the Tangerine World Mastercard

Like most things in life, it's not perfect. Here are 2 things to think about.

1. High income requirements

First, it comes with high annual income requirements – either $60,000 personal or $100,000 household. But since they're so similar, if you don't meet these requirements you can just apply for the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card and not lose anything but a few extra benefits.

2. Low base earn rate

The other is it only earns 0.5% on all purchases other than your bonus categories. But simply pair it with the right card, and you can earn 2% on your chosen categories, then use your other card for a better earn rate on everything else.

One option is the SimplyCash® Card from American Express. You'll earn 1.25% cash back on all of your purchases, plus get access to great Amex perks.

If you would prefer a Mastercard, then the Brim Mastercard is another option, which earns 1% cash back on all purchases, and has no foreign exchange fees.

The Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card

The Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card is also another option. And as mentioned before, it's quite similar to the Tangerine World Mastercard.

Many things are the same between these 2 credit cards. They're both no annual fee, have the exact same rewards structure, and the same balance transfer offer.

Where they differ is in insurance and perks.

With the Money-Back card, you're only getting basic extended warranty and purchase protection insurance. And all the fancy perks the World Mastercard provides disappear.

However, it has much lower income requirements – only a $12,000 personal income is required to qualify.

The bottom line – if you qualify for a World Mastercard, you may as well get it, even if you don't have plans to use all the benefits.

If not, you're still getting the same sweet rewards.

Almost! The silly little 3-categories rule. 2% for the categories of your choice, and 0.5% for the rest. Why? Why the little snags? Apart from that it's good. One especially good thing is that it automatically deposits the cashback monthly into the Tangerine account. Much better than other cards that have ridiculous small-pring like payouts once-per-year and only-if-you-request it...Tangerine gets a lot of stuff right, but leaves a few gaps. Of course the Fx fee surcharge is another pain in the. No bad as a back-up card.

Very disappointed with Tangerine Mastercard. This has happened twice now while traveling that my card has been locked. Both times, I made them aware that I was traveling, where to and when. Still they locked my card and when I called, security team was not available. This was a big issue since I was planning on checking in my hotel, I was in Europe. Bottom line - not reliable when you need it. It does not matter that when you take steps to prevent this outcome and when you call to resolve, the people you need to talk to are not there and their customer service who can't do anything for you repeat the same customer service lines that they are trained to say to you.

I've been happy for years with Tangerine and their credit cards. This one added the airport lounge access and Wifi at airports, which I don't really care about. The cashback is decent. It could be better than 0.5% baseline, but it's still pretty good. I don't really pay close attention to how often I get the 2% rate. It's just nice to see cash coming back in, which I prefer to "points" or "miles" that I then have to decide how to "redeem." Just give me money.

Tangerine is not watching what others are offering, having just few categories for 2% sounds like a joke.

The bank itself is not bad with some good stuff to offer, but credit cards just behind others no fee cards. Look around for better options, hope Tangerine will realize one day, that there are Rogers and others on market so they may adjust accordingly....

Very long wait times in queues for customer service. Poor access to correct customer service when calling internationally ie. toll free #. Inability of front line to remedy credit card issue. Spent hours of my travel time fixing locked credit card. Terrible experience. Looking for new cc.
