Accuracy is important to us so this article has gone through a thorough 3-stage review process and fact-checked by our team.

Looking for a card that provides great value for any type of travel?

The MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard will do just that. You'll earn plenty of points on your purchases, which can then be used for any travel deal you book from MBNA Rewards.

Or, you can get some cash instead, and use it for whatever you want.

Here's what this card has to offer.

Earning rewards with the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard

With this credit card, you'll be earning MBNA Rewards points on all your purchases.

Here's what your earn rates look like:

  • 5 points for every $1 spent on restaurants, groceries, and select recurring bills (up to $50,000 spent annually per category)
  • 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases

Those are some pretty impressive earn rates, covering a few common categories.

But the big question – what can you use your points for? Here's a summary of your different redemption options and their estimated valued.

Redemption Options For The MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard

Most flexible rewards programs see a big drop in value after travel redemptions, but not here. You'll maintain a high value for your points no matter what option you pick.

How does this translate into annual rewards? If you go with travel, you'll get an average return of 2.86%, based on a typical $2,000 monthly spend.

But even with cash, you still an average return of 2.37% – which compares quite favourably to the best cash back credit cards in Canada.

And if you do decide to redeem for cash, you have a few ways you can get it back. Your choices include:

  • cheque,
  • statement credit, and
  • direct deposit into a bank account.

That's more options than most cash back credit cards offer. All together, this credit card provides excellent rewards.

3 benefits to the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard

There are plenty of other goodies available with the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard.

Here are 3 big things to really like.

1. Annual birthday bonus

There's a sweet reward for you on your birthday with this card.

You'll get a birthday bonus – an extra 10% in points, based on what you've earned over the last year. A pretty sweet reward.

It is capped at 15,000 points, but that's a pretty sweet treat for having the card.

2. Terrific insurance

The insurance package is incredibly good, offering 12 types. And while there are credit cards that offer more types, this one includes a couple of rare ones.

The first one is price protection insurance. With any purchase you make, if you find the same item at a lower price within 60 days of your purchase, you can get a refund on the difference. You'll never have to worry about getting the best price for any semi-major purchase again. Just note, you're only eligible for a max refund of $500 per item and it's limited to $1,000 in claims per year.

The other is mobile device insurance. This insurance protects your phone – that one device you take everywhere. If it accidently breaks, or gets stolen, you'll be covered, up to a certain amount. This is the advantage of mobile device insurance.

3. Superb welcome bonus

The welcome bonus is also pretty good. You'll earn 30,000 bonus points after spending $2,000 in the first 90 days and signing up for paperless e-statements.

Those points are worth $300 when redeemed for travel, or $249 when redeemed for cash.

2 downsides to the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard

It's not an entirely perfect card. Here are 2 things to keep in mind.

1. High income requirements

The income requirements are quite high. You'll need either a personal income of $80,000 or a household income of $150,000 to qualify.

With that said, this is on par with other World Elite Mastercards, but still higher than comparable Visa Infinite cards.

2. No first year free offer

Many premium credit cards come with an annual fee waiver for the first year, as a way to try it out without putting money down.

But not here – the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard will cost you $120 for the first year.

Comparison to the MBNA Rewards Platinum Plus Mastercard

MBNA offers a no fee rewards card – the MBNA Rewards Platinum Plus® Mastercard®.

Here's how these 2 credit cards compare.

MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard MBNA Rewards Platinum Plus
Welcome bonus Up to 30,000 points (terms) Up to 10,000 points (terms)
Annual fee $120 $0
Rewards * 5 points for every $1 spent on restaurants, groceries, and select recurring bills (up to $50,000 spent annually per category)
* 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases
* 2 points for every $1 spent on restaurants, groceries, and select recurring bills (up to $10,000 spent annually per category)
* 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases
Insurance Coverage 12 types 3 types
Income Requirements * Personal: $80,000
* Household: $150,000
None

There's more of everything with the World Elite version – more rewards, more insurance, and a bigger welcome bonus.

But, that also comes with an annual fee and high income requirements as well.

So is it worth it? We would say yes, but if you don't like paying annual fees, or don't spend much per month, the no fee card might be your better choice. One point to note about the no fee card – the cash value is much lower, it’s only worth 0.5 cents per point (the other redemption options are the same).

One way to help decide if you're on the fence – use our Genius Rating. Head to our compare cards page, set your preferences and spending, see the scores of these cards, and let the higher score win.

I got this card a few weeks before a trip to Europe, as a backup in case I had issues with international purchases.

It was terrible.

MBNA locked the card after the first few charges. After many hours on hold over several calls the said they could not unlock it until they had more information from me as it had flagged for fraud based on the international purchases. It’s a “world elite” travel card!!!

After my third time on hold for hours I told them to cancel it, and told them they had provided me with easily the worst customer service I’d ever received from a financial institution.

Run away.

Best Card I've ever had. The rewards on it are unreal. Probably $1000 (in gift cards) in rewards in 8 months so far.

I don't even use it for gas because I drive an electric car.

I do enjoy the Rewards with this card. I think it will be a better credit card for rewards than my last card. There were some annoyances. It is hard to get this into Apple Wallet, you have to call them to get them to add it. Activating is a pain too, for us we also had to call them. Once we got past the initiation it has been great. Oh one more thing, it seems like this card holds onto holds longer (gas stations, hotels, etc...). Maybe that isn't a thing but it seems like it.

I reached out to provide feedback suggesting they add support for Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet and I’m so happy to see they actually listened! It’s great to see a company that truly values user feedback and takes action on it. The new wallet support works flawlessly and makes things so much more convenient. Big thanks to the team for listening to their users and continuously improving the experience!
