RBC Avion cards offer good, flexible travel rewards with some pretty decent insurance coverage as well.

And now, the RBC Avion Visa Infinite and the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege offer mobile device insurance as part of their suite of coverage. Sadly, it isn’t included with the RBC Visa Platinum Avion.

This new coverage will provide up to $1,500 in protection if something happens to your mobile device – which isn’t offered by many credit cards.

How mobile device insurance works

So how does mobile device insurance work?

First, you have to charge the cost of the new device to your card. Or, if it was included as part of a phone plan, the cost of the plan must be charged to your card.

Your phone will be covered for 2 years for any of the following reasons:

  • accidental damage,
  • physical loss, or
  • mechanical failure.

How much will you be covered for?

While these RBC cards provide up to $1,500 in coverage, you’ll only be covered up to the cost of the device, minus depreciation. For RBC cards, that’s 2% per month.

You’ll also have to pay a 10% deductible off the depreciated value as well.

So, say your device cost $500 and you make a claim 6 months later. Here’s what your payout would be:

Depreciated value = 500 – (500 x 2% x 6 months) = $440

Then, you remove the deductible from this number:

Total Insurance Payout = 440 – (440 x 10%) = $396

However, every card is a little different. Be sure to read all the details of your insurance certificate to know exactly how it works.

Other credit cards with mobile device insurance

Of course, these RBC cards aren’t the only ones that provide mobile device insurance.

The mobile device insurance by RBC is a joke. They just don't respond in a timely fashion. I made a claim for a damaged mobile device that I fully paid by my RBC Avian Privilege card. It took them over a ONE MONTH to respond to my request with a blank forms for me to fill out. There was no way to reach them by phone. They just asked me to send an email. Anyway, I filled it out and sent it back. They responded in TWO WEEKS that they got it and the file may take up to 15 WEEKS to be processed. This is just ridiculous. The company providing the coverage for RBC is Assured Assistance Inc.

Similar experience. There's no link or instructions on their website to guide you through the process. I started my ordeal in Oct 2020. I submitted all the forms they asked me for in Nov 2020, and again had to send them more documents (guess they forgot to ask me for them the first time? in December 2020. Haven't heard a thing since (currently March 2021) As a customer I expected paperwork and maybe a months wait but I'm going on 5 months here. Really letting me down RBC :(

I purchased a phone in May 2019 with RBC Infinite Avion Card and pay monthly payments using the same card to my Rogers account - I submitted a claim in December, they have denied the claim as they say I had to make purchase after June 4th. I can not see that in the terms and conditions, in fact the policy does not take effect until 91 days after purchase. Any advice? And to Jon's comment they were very slow to respond.

Hello Ian, Unfortunately since it was a new insurance added to the card on June 4th, it's possible it won't be honoured if the purchase was made before then. A few users have claimed that taking advantage of this insurance has been difficult, which is unfortunate to hear.

The RBC version is absolutely atrocious. I have been without a phone since December 11th, today is the 19th. They would't even start a claim since I didn't have access to my email contained in my broken phone. I gave them all the info and they said within 2 days someone would contact me. They did not. I called today and no one had touched the file. Once they e-mail me I have to send them documents. Not before that. I won't have my phone repaired in 2019 with the days and Holiday. I can't even call my family on Christmas. Stick to the plans provided by rogers and telus. I used the Rogers one with no issue at all. DO NOT USE THIS SERCIVE.

Hi Jon, That's unfortunate to hear. Hopefully this is just an isolated incident related to using RBC's mobile device coverage. Thanks for sharing your story!
