3 ways you can save per year

There are 3 ways this card provides annual savings when flying with WestJet. They are:

  • monthly rewards earned through shopping,
  • the annual companion voucher, and
  • free checked bags.

We'll use a round trip for 4 from Calgary to Orlando as our example of what can be saved every year.

1. Annual rewards

We'll start with the annual rewards. This is what the card earns for rewards on purchases:

  • 2 WestJet points per $1 spent on WestJet or WestJet Vacations purchases
  • 2 WestJet points per $1 spent on groceries, gas, EV charging, public transit and rideshare
  • 1.5 WestJet point per $1 spent on all other everyday purchases

Assuming you spend $2,000 on your card every month (not including any other WestJet purchases, which would earn you even more), you'd earn 360 WestJet dollars.

You can use your WestJet dollars towards the base airfare of any WestJet flight, with select airline partners, and towards WestJet Vacation packages. You cannot use your WestJet dollars to pay for any taxes and fees.

You can learn more about the WestJet Rewards program here.

2. Annual companion voucher

The annual companion voucher can lead you to some big savings on a flight.

How it works – you book one ticket for yourself. You also book another ticket on the exact same itinerary for someone else. The first fare is full price. But for the second fare, you just pay the taxes and fees, plus this set amount, which varies depending on where you're flying to.

  • $119 within Canada and to the Continental U.S., and
  • $399 anywhere else WestJet flies.

This also applies to any fare class you see. If you want a higher fare class, you'll get an even higher discount for that 2nd ticket.

So what will our hypothetical trip save? First, here are our chosen flights, with the price you see displayed for 1 person.

Here's the full breakdown of that $894.98 price.

The companion voucher fee replaces the base fare you see. For the second ticket, instead of paying $714, you would only pay $119.

In this case, the companion voucher saves $595. But that won't always be the case. How far you're flying, where you're flying to, and what time of year will all influence how much you can save.

As an example, here's the cost of a flight between Winnipeg and Toronto.

There are still savings, but in this case only $145. Your mileage will vary greatly with this benefit.

3. Free checked bags

Checked bag fees are a part of life. Thankfully, the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard includes a free checked bag as one of its major perks.

You get the first free checked bag for yourself and up to 8 others travelling on the same reservation. And that can be a big savings on its own.

Fees for just the first checked bag start at $30 and can be as high as $107 depending on how far you're travelling and when you pay for them. You'll pay more at the airport than if you pay for them before you go to check-in. And that's just one way. You'll pay it again on your way back.

For these exact flights, it costs $31.50 when you prepay for them, for a total cost of $63.

If 4 people check bags, that's an astonishing savings of $252.

Summarizing our savings

So, just by having the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard, here's what we've been able to save.

  • $360 in annual rewards,
  • $595 with the companion voucher, and
  • $252 in baggage fee savings.

Add it all up, and you've saved $1,207 by having the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard.

That more than covers the $119 annual fee you'll pay.

I principally refuse to fly Canadian any airlines. They dead to me. I only fly European ( German ) airlines. Boycott Canadian airlines whenever possible. Therefore I don’t need this credit card. Plus I hate to pay annual fees

Readers should be aware that WestJet has a pattern of adding on an extra $10 or $20 ‘Other ATC’ fee to some itineraries when a Companion Voucher is being used , but NOT adding the extra $10 or $20 on a booking for two guests when a Companion Voucher is not being used. They may still charge an Other ATC fee but I noticed a pattern whereby it’s less than the fee when applying the voucher. This dilutes the marketed face value of the voucher on certain bookings, which I believe is an illegal practice , at least in Canada. That being said, there is still lots of value in having this card , especially for those who prefer WestJet as their go to airline.
