RBC WestJet Mastercard benefits can make a big difference to the cost and comfort of travelling with WestJet, whether you fly once a year or seem to live at the airport.
There are currently 3 cards in the lineup: a regular Mastercard, a World Elite Mastercard, and a Business World Elite Mastercard. Benefits vary considerably, with the World Elite cards offering the most travel perks.
Of all the benefits available, the annual companion voucher is arguably the most valuable. When you book a flight, you can get a ticket for a fellow traveller at a much cheaper flat rate. The World Elite card also offers flexible alternatives if you'll be travelling alone this year.
This guide breaks down all the major WestJet RBC card benefits, which cards have which benefits, and how you can get the most value.
Key Takeaways
- The annual companion voucher is one of the biggest reasons to consider a WestJet RBC Mastercard, particularly if you regularly travel with a partner.
- The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard adds valuable benefits including a free first checked bag for the cardholder and up to 8 guests, Status Lift, Dragonpass membership, and a broad travel insurance package.
- Business owners get a different package with the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard for Business, including instant WestJet Silver status, accelerated earning on eligible business expenses, and free checked bags.
- All 3 cards earn WestJet points, but the rates, annual fees, welcome bonuses, and additional travel benefits vary considerably.

RBC WestJet Mastercard benefits: Overview
All 3 WestJet RBC Mastercards are designed to make travelling with WestJet more rewarding, but they're not interchangeable. The $39 WestJet RBC Mastercard provides a lower-cost entry into the program, while the personal and business World Elite cards offer a much longer list of travel benefits. Once again, the companion voucher deserves special attention. Both personal cards provide one, and depending on how you use it, the savings on a single trip could more than make up for the cost of being a cardholder.
The major RBC WestJet Mastercard benefits we'll cover include:
- Companion voucher
- Airport lounge access
- Free checked baggage

Ontario personal finance writer Samantha K. recently experienced WestJet's benefits working together to save her money on her latest vacation:
My husband and I booked our summer vacation from London, Ontario to Victoria, British Columbia. Before we bought our tickets, we researched the best credit card options to help us save on our upcoming flights. We chose the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard.
With a welcome offer of up to 70,000 WestJet points, a companion voucher, and the annual fee waived for the first year, it seemed like a no-brainer.
We were sure to spend over $5,000 in the 3 months after receiving our card, earning us 60,000 WestJet points in welcome bonuses. We'll earn an additional 10,000 WestJet points on our card anniversary, but timelines didn't allow us to earn this before our flight purchase. We already had a balance of 1,783 WestJet Rewards points when we signed up, so our total balance after these bonuses was 61,783 WestJet points.
This saved us $617.83 toward the total cost of our flight – $600 of which came directly from the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard welcome bonuses. While this made a significant difference, it wasn't enough to completely cover the cost of the flights, so we used our WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard to cover the rest, earning more points in the process.
We also used the companion voucher to save another $747.17 on the cost of my husband's ticket. It was one of those cases where the credit card benefits translated into very obvious, real savings on a trip we were already planning on taking.
Using her WestJet points and the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard's welcome bonus and companion voucher, Samantha saved $1,365. Then she stacked her savings further by getting 2 checked bags for free.
RBC WestJet companion voucher
Applies to:
If you're comparing RBC WestJet card benefits, start here.
The companion voucher is definitely one of the most valuable benefits available with the personal WestJet RBC cards. You need to spend $5,000 on the card in order to earn the companion voucher, but once you do, you've pocketed a highly valuable travel perk.
Companion vouchers work when you purchase a round-trip fare for yourself as the primary cardholder, then use the voucher to book a reduced base fare for a companion travelling on the same itinerary.
Some premium credit cards require you to spend $25,000 or even $50,000 to access companion vouchers, making the RBC WestJet highly accessible by comparison.
With the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard, the companion fare is $119 for flights within Canada and to the continental U.S., and $399 for the rest of the world (which includes Hawaii). Taxes, fees, charges, and other Air Transportation Charges (ATC) still apply.
Another bright side to this benefit is its flexibility. You can also choose to exchange the companion voucher for any of the following perks:
- 2 lounge vouchers
- A $200 credit for WestJet and Sunwing Vacations packages
- A 30% discount code for 1 traveller
The WestJet RBC Mastercard comes with a useful voucher as well, though it's only available for round trips within Canada. The continental U.S. Economy fares are $199, and Premium or PremiumFlex fares are $299. As with the World Elite voucher, taxes and fees still apply.
Samantha's RBC WestJet Savings
When it came to booking the London – Victoria flights for our summer vacation, we used the companion voucher earned through our WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard. This meant my husband's fare was only $119 since we were staying in Canada.
We chose to spend an additional $274 plus $35.62 in tax to upgrade to Extended Comfort seats (yes please, to extra legroom), so my ticket came to $1,446.17 in total before using my WestJet points, and his came to $699.
That's almost $750 in savings right off the top.
Here's how my husband's fare was calculated:
- Companion fare: $119
- Taxes, fees, and charges: $270
- Extended Comfort seats: $274
- Tax on Extended Comfort seats: $35.62
- Total: About $699
It's important to highlight that this companion fare didn't magically turn the entire second ticket into a $119 flight – taxes, fees, charges, and extras (like our Extended Comfort seats) still applied. But it replaced a much higher regular fare with a $119 companion fare, taking a significant chunk out of the cost of an expensive summer trip for 2.
RBC WestJet airport lounge access
Applies to:
- WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard
- WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard for Business
Here's where it's important to read the fine print. The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard gives you Mastercard Travel Pass membership provided by Dragonpass, with access to a network of more than 1,300 airport lounges worldwide. But membership doesn't mean your lounge visits are automatically free.
Typically, each visit has to be paid for separately at a cost of $32 USD. With the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard, one way to get complimentary lounge visits is to exchange your annual companion voucher for 2 lounge vouchers.
You can also unlock lounge privileges through WestJet status. Silver members receive 6 lounge vouchers, while Gold and Platinum members receive priority check-in, unlimited lounge access with family privileges, plus 2 transferable guest vouchers.
Gold and Platinum status adds several other airport perks, including priority baggage and priority security.
The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard for Business has an advantage here because primary cardholders receive instant Silver status. That puts Silver benefits – such as lounge vouchers, priority boarding, and priority check-in – within reach without first having to earn the tier through travel.
Free checked baggage on WestJet
Applies to:
- WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard
- WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard for Business
Checking bags can get expensive quickly, especially when you're travelling as a group. When you pay for a flight with your WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard, you and up to 8 guests on the same reservation get your first checked bag free.
This benefit is particularly useful for families. A family of 5 checking 1 bag each on a round trip could avoid 10 individual baggage charges on just 1 vacation.
There are some conditions, so be sure to read the fine print before booking your trip. The benefit is only available for the primary cardholder, and your WestJet Rewards ID needs to be attached to the reservation.
The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard for Business also provides free checked bags for the primary cardholder and up to 8 guests on the same booking. Plus, its included Silver status comes with additional baggage benefits: Silver members receive their first 2 checked bags free on eligible WestJet itineraries.
For families or groups that regularly check bags, this can easily become one of the most frequently used WestJet RBC Mastercard benefits.
WestJet Rewards status boost
Applies to:
- WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard
- WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard for Business
WestJet's Status Lift benefit gives World Elite cardholders another way to reach Silver, Gold, or Platinum status without relying entirely on flying.
For every $5,000 in eligible purchases made with the card, you receive $200 in tier-qualifying spend. You can earn up to 50 Status Lifts per year.
Silver WestJet status includes 2 free checked bags, 6 lounge vouchers, priority check-in, Zone 2 boarding, 4 advance seat selection vouchers, and eligibility for complimentary upgrades.
Gold WestJet status adds unlimited lounge access with family privileges, 6 advance seat selection vouchers, priority baggage and security, a priority support number, and no fee for same-day flight changes.
Platinum WestJet status raises the stakes again with 3 free checked bags, Zone 1 boarding, unlimited advance seat selection for the member, and the highest priority for complimentary upgrades.

Generous welcome bonus
Applies to:
- WestJet RBC Mastercard
- WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard
- WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard for Business
The ongoing benefits matter most over the long run, but the welcome offers can give new cardholders a big head start. In Samantha's case, the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard's welcome bonus was the reason she signed up for the card.
| Card | Current Welcome Bonus |
|---|---|
| WestJet RBC Mastercard | 15,000 WestJet points (terms) |
| WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard | |
| WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard for Business | Up to 100,000 bonus points (terms) |
Always check the terms to make sure you complete all criteria required to maximize your bonus.
Welcome offers are particularly useful when you can combine those points with the card's other benefits, like Samantha did when she booked her summer flights to B.C. Instead of looking at a welcome bonus as a standalone perk, consider how the points could work alongside a companion voucher or free baggage on an upcoming trip.
"That's exactly how we approached our own booking," says Samantha. "Rather than treating the welcome offer as something to save indefinitely, we used our points toward a trip we already knew we wanted to take and then layered the companion voucher and free checked bags on top."

The DoorDash benefit depends on your card.
