Accuracy is important to us so this article has gone through a thorough 3-stage review process and fact-checked by our team.

Despite being branded with the company’s name, the CIBC Costco Mastercard is not the best credit card for Costco – better options include the Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard and the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard, which offer better rewards both at and outside of Costco.

We've sorted through a warehouse full of credit card details and created a simple comparison of your Costco credit card options, presented for you in the article below.

Key Takeaways

  • The CIBC Costco Mastercard earns 1% cash back at Costco warehouses, 3% back at restaurants and Costco gas, and 2% back at other gas stations and costco.ca.
  • Other Mastercards that provide better rewards on Costco purchase include the Rogers World Elite Mastercard and the MBNA World Elite Mastercard.
  • Costco accepts all Mastercards, both in store and online.

I would highly recommend NOT acquiring a CIBC Costco Mastercard. Where the fault lies is either with CIBC or Mastercard, neither of which now have my trust. After several years of the card failing for no reason and having to be reinstated by phone, they have crossed the line in the sand. I called twice to ensure that a large, four figure charge in USD to be made in Europe on one of the family cards would be honored. I was assured that the amount was well within the limit for overseas charges and that it would go through. I was also assured that notice of the future charge and the payee would be posted against the card. When the charge was made, however, it was denied and both of the family cards were blocked. A 60 minute phone call wait resulted in an agent telling me he would unblock the card that was not used, but not the card that was used for the overseas charge. The owner of that card was required to call the 60-minute-wait phone number from Europe, himself to get it unblocked. A demand to speak to a manager was also denied - there weren't any - but someone would call me back. No one called me back. Upon trying to use my card after the unblocking - it failed. I'm back to square one, on another 60 minute hold, both cards unusable. Why would I accept this? The cards will be cancelled.

How do I get statements online for my monthly spending and how do I get old statements from the old capital 1 account.

Hey Garry, You'll need to register online with CIBC using your old card details to get your new statements going forward. For your old statements, CIBC has instructions for two ways to retrieve these. Make a request through CIBC Online Banking: • Sign on to CIBC Online Banking. • After sign-on, go to the My Accounts page. • Click on View eStatements on the side bar on the left-hand side of the page. • On the dropdown menu, ensure you’ve selected your Costco Mastercard account. • Below your account number, you will see a box explaining how to request your previous Costco Mastercard statements. Click on the Submit a Request link. • You will then be directed to a form to submit a request to retrieve previous Costco Mastercard statements issued up to and including March 4. • Fill out the form and press Submit. Or; Make a request by calling the customer service phone number on the back of your credit card.

Understood the existing capital one credit card still effective with CIBC. Tried to make a purchase on line, not successful as it stated card not accepted. This was through Costco and JKTuber. Please advise upon phoning there is no service until the 7 th of March

Hey, According to the news, the Capital One card is supposed to work fine until your new CIBC card is delivered. If you're having issues, I'd look into reaching out to CIBC. There may be some account information you need to update. Hope this helps!

I have just received your cibc/costco package. The first thing I noticed was the misspelling of my last name. There is no capital "R". The correct spelling is MACRAE or Macrae, M is the only capital. Please have the proper spelling on the new cibc/costco card. Thank you - PETER MACRAE

If CiBC either puts in an annual fee or eliminates the 3% rebate on restaurant purchases, I will be cancelling the new card. I already have other no fee cards where I can get 2% on restaurant & grocery purchases.

Wondering if the CIBC MasterCard once partnered up with Costco have the same benefits or better than the Capital One Costco MasterCard which has travel benefits. Not sure about the cash back structure. Capital One Costco MasterCard rewards 3% on restaurant purchases and 2% on gas purchases . Hopefully the rewards will be better and zero annual fee.

Hey Manish, We're also hoping the new CIBC card has better rewards than what Capital One offers. Extra benefits would be the cherry on top, of course.

Credit card companies chase the Costco account but those that get there find out that its not what they thought it would be. Costco shoppers are savvy shoppers. Take the existing card - because of the measly 1/2% return on everything except gas, most Costco members only used the card for membership entry and to buy gas and used another card for the in store purchases. Amex did not last and Capital One did not last. Now it is CIBC's turn to see what they can make of it. More important and not covered in this article - What as the result of the new card are the changes for members?? As this will make or break what card members use when they pay.

Hey Marpy, It does seem like Costco churns through partners, so it will be interesting to see how long CIBC lasts. Unfortunately, we don't have the details on what the new card looks like yet, but we'll be letting our readers know as soon as we do. Right now, the only thing we know for sure is that CIBC is taking over.

I always thought it was weird that the Capital One card did not offer Costco Shopping a higher rate than the 0.5% to 1% "everything else" category. No incentive when you already have, say, a Rogers World elite that gives back 1.75% across the board. Tech Guy in BC I will be highly surprised of the CIBC card does not correct that.

Hey Keith, Thanks for your comment! We agree that it's very strange to see a branded store card not offer bonus rewards at said store, so hopefully CIBC does something in this regard. And as someone else has noted, you only earn 1.5% with the Rogers World Elite Mastercard.

Actually, he did, From the article: "CIBC will automatically transition you to their new card in early 2022. There’s nothing you have to do and you won’t even have to complete a new application for the card. Your annual rebate coupon will be sent to you in January 2022 as normal."
