The end of the Capital One and Costco Mastercard partnership

Capital One ended its partnership with Costco in 2022. Here are some questions that many Capital One Costco card users had and the answers that we were able to find out.

What happened to Capital One Costco Mastercard cardholders?

Capital One Costco Mastercard cardholders were transitioned over to the CIBC Costco Mastercard.

It was unclear at the time, but CIBC would be the new partner and exclusive credit card issuer for Costco, ending a 15-year agreement between everyone's favourite warehouse club and Capital One.

Those who got the new CIBC Costco Mastercard found that it was similar to the previous one.

You earn cash back at the following rates:

  • 3% cash back on restaurants and Costco gas
  • 2% cash back at other gas stations, EV charging, and at Costco.ca
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases

You can redeem your cash back using the gift certificate that is issued in January of the following year. You can use the gift certificate towards any purchase at a Costco warehouse. If your purchase doesn’t use the entire amount, you’ll receive the change owed in cash.

You'll also get some deals on costco.ca, 3 types of insurance, and be able to use this card as your Costco membership card.

The biggest issue is the disappointing earn rate at Costco warehouses. You'll see plenty of better Mastercard options in the section below.

Are Mastercards still accepted at Costco?

After the changeover, Costco decided to continue only accepting Mastercards. The warehouses have an exclusive agreement with Mastercard, which charges them lower interchange fees.

Alternatives to the CIBC Costco Mastercard?

We go into more detail in our full article about the best Costco credit card alternatives to the CIBC Costco Mastercard, but here is a sampling of 2 of the best other options that you can choose from.

The MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard is a winner of multiple awards, including best Mastercard in Canada.

We'll start off with the earn rate, which is superb:

  • 5 points for every $1 spent on restaurants, groceries, and select recurring bills (up to $50,000 spent annually per category)
  • 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases

With each point worth 1 cent each, you'll be looking at a return of 5% in multiple categories. Unfortunately, Costco is not treated as a grocery store – so while you'll only get 1% there, getting easy access to 5 times that when making many other purchases isn't too shabby. This makes it a more well-rounded credit card, especially if you don't have a Rogers service.

You'll start off nicely with a welcome bonus too: 30,000 MBNA Rewards points after spending $2,000 in the first 90 days and signing up for paperless e-statements and get an annual birthday bonus of 10% of what you earned in points last year (capped at 15,000 points).

It also comes with way more insurance than the CIBC Costco Mastercard, with 12 types in total.

Note that there is an annual fee of $120.

Capital One ends their Hudson's Bay relationship as well

Costco also announced that their partnership with Hudson's Bay would also come to an end. To replace the outgoing Hudson's Bay Mastercard, it was announced that Neo Financial would step up to the plate with its HBC Mastercard.

Will you stick with the CIBC Costco Mastercard?

Seeing a major partnership between a bank and a popular store like Costco can have a ripple effect on the market.

Hey Gisela, The switchover from Capital One to CIBC took place in March, so I would look into calling CIBC or visit a branch to have your account closed.

Hey William, The Capital One Costco Mastercard is now transferred to CIBC. You should have received emails or mail from both CIBC and Capital One with the required steps for you to take. You can register online with CIBC by using your Capital One Costco Mastercard information. If you run into difficulties, consider reaching out to CIBC directly!

I don't have the Costco Mastercard but my husband does. And this will also affect his membership as it currently is all in one. He currently has no interest in moving his Mastercard to a new card. He wishes to close the account and then renew his membership card on it's own. It will be interesting to see who Costco now teams up with and if they will offer a cash back option as well, which is the only reason he combined his membership with the Mastercard.

I had a Costco MasterCard which was paid off but cancelled by your company because I had not renewed my Costco membership. A year prior to that I had purchased an airline ticket for Sunwing Airlines, and due to the covid my flite was cancelled and they are issuing refunds. NOW,,,,I have not received my refund as it was to be credited back to my card which no longer exist. How do I get my money if it was sent to you. Please advise as it has been months since I was notified of the refund .

This is now confirmed. Just posted today (2-September-2021) that CIBC is acquiring the Costco MasterCard portfolio: https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/cibc-buying-3b-costco-mastercard-portfolio-from-capital-one-1.1647127 From the BNN Bloomberg article: Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce has signed a deal to become the exclusive issuer of Costco Mastercards in Canada starting early next year. The lender will also acquire the retail giant’s existing Canadian credit card portfolio, which boasts more than $3 billion in outstanding balances, according to a news release Thursday. The new credit card offering will serve as a Costco membership card, and provide rewards for shoppers online and at any of Costco's more than 100 Canadian warehouses. Any customer with an existing Capital One Costco Mastercard can continue to use it until receiving the new card in early 2022.

I sure hope it isn't CIBC. I still remember the experience with them and Aeroplan where they diluted the rewards year after year to the point that it was virtually impossible (with personal rather than business spending, this was at the time that businesses stopped the use of personal cards for business travel) to pay back the cost of the card. It showed me then that card loyalty for CIBC meant very little to them (and by implication, anyone they partnered with). Their business model is churn (new sign-ups) not market share (keeping satisfied customers).

I note you said that Costco USA only accepts Visa cards. This us not strictly true! After considerable backlash from Costco Canada Customers who live close to the border and shop in the USA, Costco USA will accept the Costco Capital One Mastercard! As I understand it, this is the only exception - but a significant one nonetheless! Of course, once Costco Canada no longer has a partnership with Capital One Mastercard all bets are off. But for the time being those who hold the Costco Canada Capital One Mastercard are good to go at Costco USA! Now if only the border would reopen...

So, it's better to wait to open a new costco account? Because I don't want my credit report to have an credit card closed as soon as I opened. Also, the perks are more in US when compared to Canada especially the cash back and I wish costco will bring similar perks with new credit card company.

Hey Jennifer, That situation was a little different. Chase was the issuer of the Amazon card, and they were pulling out of the Canadian Market all together, and that's the reason they waived unpaid balances. Capital One will still be issuing Canadian credit cards, so this isn't likely to happen. But, as you said, one can dream.

Capital One customer service is terrible and often is not very honest or accommodating. I only have $8000 limit on the Costco capital one card and can never get an increase even askin multiple times. It’s hard to carry only one card with such a low limit. I get about $400-$600 annual rebate and the another $250 for executive membership rebate. I am constantly making transfer payments to stay within the $8000.

We have a Hudson’s Bay Capital One MasterCard that will be cancelled in May. Have had it for 12 years. April 8, 2021
Hey Lynn, There probably won't be any difference to the credit bureau whether you close it or the company does (as long as you're not a delinquent customer). That said, you may see a slight drop in your score as the average age of your accounts will be less. But this should be a temporary dip in your score that should sort itself out, assuming there are no other negative factors.

I hope the new Costco credit card is a Visa or MasterCard. Was very glad when Costco dropped the AMEX credit card because it wasn't as widely accepted with other merchants. A real pain it was to always carry a second credit card (Visa or MC) in case the AMEX wasn't accepted.

Very interesting development this past week, Neo Financial (a subsidiary of ATB) has taken on the HBC MasterCard from Capital One. Considering Neo/ATB are smaller and newer bank, I'm curious to see whether or not Costco will partner with one of the Big Five banks or any of their subsidiaries. Although I personally would love AMEX to return, I just don't see AMEX wanting to be locked into a ruthless contract with Costco. Plus, I believe Costco's membership base will be negatively affected going from MC to AMEX, especially during COVID times where people are more reluctant. My prediction: Costco will partner with a BMO and continue using their MasterCard network and offer a co-branded MC product with a flat 1% cashback, with no annual fee. It's simply too risky for Costco to ask their membership base to switch credit card networks in the middle of a pandemic. If BMO isn't the partner, I predict RBC will be and that Costco Canada will transition to accepting both Visa and MasterCard. Only time will tell!

Interesting go to Costco in Australia where I was in November 2017, Costco accepted all three Credit Cards, American Express, MasterCard and Visa. I always felt it was a poor choice on the part of Costco to switch away from American Express. The so called "perks" of Capital One MasterCard never materialized and after a few years I dropped it entirely. I still like American Express - first rate customer service and they offer 1.25% on cash back with none of the silly 0.50% on the first $3000 which is Capital One do. Tangerine MasterCard is also excellent - 2% back in three categories which I use for all food purchases plus gasoline. As for Costco and their options, it will be a VISA card unless someone seriously wants to take on such a huge account that Costco would be. The big issue - you have to march to Costco's drumbeat - not the other way around. I don't think American Express will be very interested having been screwed around.

I’m happy they are ending CAPITAL ONE COSTCO as it is my ONLY credit card that doesn’t do Apple Pay on my phone. So that alone. Makes the card my LEAST used card. Right next to scene visa because of the benefits only at theater makes it a seldom used card. But capital one despite being no annual fee. Offers practically ZERO perks and very little convenience especially in this century. And honestly. When I’m at Costco. I use My other mastercards vs using the Costco one as I can’t be bothered to even use my Costco mastercard. I really only use it for membership entry for the photo on the back of the card.

Get the American Express cobalt. 5% groceries and dining 2% on travel including taxi Uber etc and even postage stamps count and for me locally. Loading compass bus pass fare 1% back on everything else Zero minimum to redeem towards your bill. Lots of gift options from appliances to giftcards. $120/ a year annual fee BUT you are billed $10/month so you can LEAVE any time and you don’t have to “wait for your annual fee to kick in, before the rewards auto release like some cards. Which locks you into a never ending cycle of having to be actively paying annual fees to cash out your rewards. I absolutely love my card. They do voice authentication. So when you call from registered cell. They don’t even ask you any security questions if your voice matches. Hardly any wait time. And the app can do pretty much anything. And they also randomly send you nice appreciation cards. I got a $100 to Whistler just out of the blue with a letter saying enjoy!!

What a pain. The life of branded credit cards is getting shorter and shorter. I had an Amazon card and the US provider pull out of that arrangement. Now I have a new one with another provider MBNA or TD. It takes time to set up a system to use the card to your advantage. The Capital One Costco card is my main card. Good thing I do not use it to pay my reoccurring bills. So I do not to re-register a new card with my providers. Years ago I kept dropping cards provided by Canadian Banks who kept cutting the benefits every couple of years. It was an annoyance. Still it will be interesting to see who ponies up to be the new Costco cc provider.
