The World of Hyatt loyalty program earns you Hyatt points, which you can redeem for free hotel stays, experiences, rental cars, and more. While there aren't as many ways to earn points as with other rewards programs, you can get a lot of value from your Hyatt hotel points.

Since Hyatt uses a fixed redemption chart for free hotel stays, it pays to book during off-peak times of the year. We'll walk you through all your redemption options so you're not leaving any points on the table.

Key Takeaways

  • Earn Hyatt reward points for booking stays at qualifying hotels and resorts or by renting cars with Avis.
  • Redeem Hyatt reward points for free stays, experiences, and car rentals.

What is World of Hyatt?

World of Hyatt is the rewards program for Hyatt hotels. Hyatt has properties worldwide, including locations throughout Canada.

Here are the brands where you can earn and redeem Hyatt points:

A List Of Hyatt Hotel Properties

How much is 1 Hyatt point worth?

Hyatt points can be used in five major ways. You can choose from:

  • Free hotel or resort nights or upgrades
  • Experiences
  • Transfers to airline partners
  • Car rentals
  • Gifting points

The value of experiences varies quite a bit, but here's the approximate value for airline transfers, hotels, and car rentals:

As you might expect, if you gift points, they retain their current value. Their ultimate value will depend on how they're eventually redeemed.

How to earn Hyatt points

There's really only one way to earn a lot of Hyatt points: by booking stays at qualifying Hyatt hotels and resorts.

Earning points at Hyatt hotels

Most of your points will be earned at Hyatt properties. Almost anything you get at a Hyatt hotel will earn you points. In addition to booking rooms, these purchases at Hyatt locations also earn you points:

  • Dining
  • Spa treatments
  • Villas and private condos
  • Meetings or events (which earn you bonus points)
  • Qualifying experiences
  • Peloton ride or row at Hyatt locations

You'll earn 5 points per $1 USD on purchases at Hyatt hotels. However, you won't earn points on any taxes or fees paid.

Earning Hyatt points with Avis car rentals

When you rent a car with Avis, you can earn Hyatt points instead of Avis ones.

On every eligible rental, you'll earn 500 points, plus you can get up to 25% off your rental.

Credit cards

You'll see some Hyatt credit cards mentioned when perusing their site. However, these are only for our friends in the United States.

While there are no Canadian credit cards that earn Hyatt points directly, a flexible rewards credit card can allow you to redeem points for any travel purchase (including stays at Hyatt properties). Here are a few to look at.

How to redeem World of Hyatt points

So, how do you use those Hyatt points you've been collecting? There are five main redemption options.

Redeem Hyatt Points for free hotel nights: 0.30 CPP

When you're collecting Hyatt Points, using them for free hotel nights is probably going to be your first choice.

Hyatt has fixed charts that they use to determine how many points you need for a free night. There are several different charts depending on the type of room you're booking. The points you need also vary by hotel category and whether you're looking at peak, off-peak, or standard rates.

Here's what the standard room chart looks like as an example.

Standard room redemption chart for Hyatt hotels

Since you need a fixed amount of points for a free night and the actual price of hotel rooms will vary, we took a look at redemptions for various Hyatt hotels across Canada.

Looking one month ahead for a two-night stay, we came to an average value of 0.3 cents per point.

Transfer Hyatt points to airline partners: 0.8 CPP

Hyatt has a long list of airlines you can transfer your points to. For most of them, 5 Hyatt points become 2 airline miles (there are some exceptions).

As for the airlines involved, sadly, Air Canada is not one of them. Here's a sampling of some of the major airlines:

  • Air France
  • American Airlines
  • British Airways
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Emirates
  • Korean Air
  • Lufthansa
  • United

A few of Air Canada's partners are here, so we'll use an average value of 2 cents per point.

Two airline miles are worth 4 cents. Spread amongst 5 Hyatt points, that's 0.8 cents per point. If there's an airline that has a rewards flight you may want, this is an excellent way to get value from Hyatt points.

Car rentals with Avis: 1.3 CPP

You can turn Hyatt points into car rentals with Avis. It's a limited redemption but may be worth your time.

6,000 points can be turned into one day for an intermediate-sized car. The cost will vary based on your dates and location. We looked at a few airports and we found that a rental costs around $80 per day. That turns into a value of 1.3 cents per point.

This redemption is subject to availability and blackout dates.

Experiences

You can also use your points towards experiences. These can range from simple things, such as using points towards dining or spas at Hyatt hotels, to renting event spaces.

Here's a summary of the kinds of things you can use your points for.

Use Hyatt points for dining, massages, travel experiences, meetings, events, and more.

The value of each experience varies, so compare the redemption rates when choosing how you want to spend your points.

Gifting Hyatt points

Got more Hyatt points than you know what to do with? If you have friends or family who participate in the World of Hyatt, you can gift points in increments of 1,000. Hyatt allows you to gift or share up to 55,000 points per calendar year.

FAQ

What's the best way to use Hyatt points?

We recommend booking Hyatt hotel rooms or resorts during off-peak times when rooms are less expensive, and your points will go farther. You can also combine points with cash to afford a trip you're eyeing.

How many Hyatt points do I need for a free stay?

The lowest redemption option is 3,500 points for a standard room at a Hyatt location during off-peak times. A standard room at standard times will cost you 5,000 Hyatt points and 6,500 points at peak times.

How much are 50,000 Hyatt points worth?

The value of 50,000 Hyatt points depends on how you choose to redeem the points, but 50,000 Hyatt points could be worth $650 toward rental cars or up to 10 stays in a Hyatt Place hotel. Hyatt has fixed redemption charts for booking hotels and resorts, but the point value can vary depending on the season and room type.

Do Hyatt points expire?

If your World of Hyatt account is inactive for 24 months, all of your points will be forfeited, but your account will not be closed (so long as you opened it after July 2017). Keep your Hyatt account active to prevent points from expiring.
