Accuracy is important to us so this article has gone through a thorough 3-stage review process and fact-checked by our team.

The CIBC Costco Mastercard has replaced the Capital One Costco Mastercard as the store credit card for Costco shoppers. Those who had the Capital One card were automatically switched over to the new CIBC card, and the new card does provide nearly identical rates as the old one.

However, this doesn’t mean it’s the best choice for shopping at Costco. And not being given the opportunity to accept or decline the card change once Costco changed partners has been a bit of a sore spot with some faithful shoppers.

Even though this transition happened a while ago, some cardholders still aren’t sure what the newer CIBC Costco Mastercard offers them, especially in relation to non-Costco partner cards. We’ve compiled all the necessary details here, so you can be fully informed and decide whether to keep this card or move on to something better.

Key Takeaways

  • The CIBC Costco Mastercard was introduced as the replacement for the Capital One Costco Mastercard in March of 2022.
  • The earn rates of the CIBC Mastercard are very similar to what the Capital One card offered.
  • The CIBC Mastercard is likely not your best choice for shopping at Costco – other cards have better earn rates and perks.
  • You must have a Costco membership in order to apply for the CIBC Costco Mastercard.

The CIBC Costco Mastercard

It’s been more than a year since the official switch was made from the Capital One Costco card to the CIBC Costco Mastercard, but understanding the differences between them is still important. So let’s start at the beginning.

The earn rates on rewards is arguably the most important feature of any credit card. Here’s what the CIBC Costco Mastercard has to offer:

  • 3% cash back on restaurants and Costco gas
  • 2% cash back at other gas stations, EV charging, and at Costco.ca
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases

What do you get for rewards? It’s essentially the same as before. You’ll get a gift certificate that you can bring in and use at any Costco Warehouse. You’ll get a digital version you can show on your phone or you’ll be able to log into your CIBC online banking and print it.

There are a few other features. It comes with some basic insurance, including extended warranty and purchase protection. But the biggest insurance coverage to note is mobile device insurance. This is very valuable to have, especially considering that most new phones will cost close to $1,000.

CIBC Costco Mastercard

Extended Warranty1 year
Purchase Protection90 days
Mobile Device$1,000

Please review your insurance certificate for details, exclusions and limitations of your coverage.

If you meet the requirements, there’s also a World Mastercard you can get, which is the same card, but just includes standard World Mastercard benefits. The typical income requirements of a World Mastercard are $60,000 personal or $100,000 household.

Finally, just like the Capital One Costco card before it, there’s no annual fee for you to worry about. Oh, and the credit card doubles as your membership too, so that’s one less piece of plastic to weigh down your wallet.

When can I apply for the CIBC Costco Mastercard?

You can apply for the CIBC Costco Mastercard at any time, either online or at a Costco warehouse location. Costco’s website offers information about the card, but the “apply” link will take you to the CIBC site.

However, you do have to be a current Costco member to apply for this card. This means that even though the card itself doesn’t require an annual fee, you will have to cough up the either $60 or $120 per year for your Costco membership.

Remember, the Costco Capital One card isn’t available at all anymore. Those who had this card should have received a replacement CIBC Costco Mastercard long ago.

Other credit cards to use for Costco

Surprisingly, the CIBC Costco Mastercard doesn’t offer the best rewards for shopping at Costco, particularly because there’s no Costco warehouse-specific earn rate.

But there is a world of other credit card options out there – Mastercards, in particular, since those are all that Costco accept. In fact, we have a page dedicated to the best Costco Mastercards to make it a bit easier for you to find the card that’s best for you. We’ve got you covered.

As a brief overview, here are the basic details of a few cards we think are especially well suited for Costco shoppers.

How are you liking the CIBC Costco Mastercard?

Even though the Capital One Costco card has been gone for a while now, understanding what the CIBC Costco Mastercard replacement offers you is important. What are your thoughts on the CIBC Costco Mastercard? Is it still the best choice for you and your Costco spending, or will you consider a different card?

FAQ

What is the difference between the Capital One Costco Mastercard and the CIBC Costco Credit Card?

Other than the name, not a lot. The earn rates are a little different with the new CIBC Costco Mastercard. Namely, you will earn 3% on Costco gas, 2% on costco.ca, and 1% everywhere else. Previously, you’d earn 3% at restaurants, 2% on gas, and 1% on purchases outside these categories.

What is the best cash back credit card for Costco?

Since the earn rate is only 1% at Costco with the new CIBC Costco Mastercard, your best option for cash back is the Brim World Elite Mastercard as you’ll get double the return (up to a limit of $25,000).

Is the CIBC Costco Mastercard any good?

Yes, the CIBC Costco Mastercard can still provide valuable rewards, especially if you’re a frequent visitor at the Costco gas bar or you make frequent purchases from Costco online. Otherwise, this card is overshadowed by other Mastercards with higher annual rewards.

Hey Ryan, The Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card allows you to earn 2% Money-Back Rewards on everyday purchases in two 2% Money-Back Categories of your choice. However, even if you choose "Grocery" as one of those two categories, please note that Costco and Walmart aren't usually recognized as grocery stores in credit card reward programs.

Hey Martha, Your CIBC Costco card should have your photo and your Costco membership number on the back which can be used for identification purposes in place of the signature.

Hey Joan, If you are registered with CIBC online and/or through their mobile app, you should be receiving a monthly statement which includes the total balance. Otherwise you should be receiving the statement in the mail. If you don't receive your monthly statements at all, I'd look into contacting CIBC directly to get this resolved. Hope this helps!

I have a capital one mastercard through Costco and I understand that it will be switched over in August to CIBC. I pay my bills in full as soon as they arrive and have never defaulted. My April bill which was due on April 18th was paid through my bank as usual on April 5 (in full), yet I received an email from CIBC to say that I need to pay the minimum. WHAT? This is no way to win over clients telling them they need to pay when in fact that is no so. I tried for three days to get a hold of someone, anyone at all the phones I could find. Everything is automated but as a senior I do not do much over the internet so therefore would appreciate speaking to a "real" person. Since I can't get you please have someone call me anytime Monday to Sunday 1-4 pm. thank you. R. Mannhardt

Hey Racey, Please note we are not CIBC, so we won't be able to directly solve your issues that you're having with your new CIBC card. The Capital One Costco cards have already been switched over to CIBC, but you may not receive the physical CIBC card until August. If you're having trouble with their phone lines, consider looking into going into a CIBC branch for help.

Transferring over to the CIBC Costco Mastercard has been a TERRIBLE experience. Im trying to register my old card to CIBC so that I can pa off my balance but you need a CIBC card to do so. My new card will not arrive for many more months so how do I pay off my balance? Trying to register to be on the CIBC Costco list so I can set up automatic banking etc is an impossibility because again even though they ask for your old mastercard number it is invalid on their side because AGAIN you need a CIBC Mastercard. This is ridiculous. I am trying to pay my bill but CIBC makes it impossible to do so. I would rather apply for any other mastercard to use at Costco than use the CIBC one. Their service and ease of use are SHIT.

Unfortunately, having the Costco credit card with CIBC has been terrible. I miss Capital One's app. With CIBC, the secondary card holder is unable to see the estatement or transactions by the primary card holder even though it's a joint account and there really isn't a "primary" card holder since we both pay the bill equally from our joint account and we both agree that we should have the same authorities for the credit card. CIBC isn't able to change this access (wait times have been horrendously long, I waited 2 hrs) so we are looking at switching to another credit card to pay all of our bills now.

I am confused about where to send payment for charges incurred both before March 5 and after March 5 as there is no CIBC card issued until the Summer. Do I pay Capital One for any charges up to March 5? Do I set up an account at CIBC with the same card number as my existing Capital One card and send payment there for charges after March 5th? I wish that CIBC would explain these things without the consumer having to reach out for the answer!

Hey John, CIBC says "Start making payments to CIBC when you receive statements from us", but it doesn't entirely clear up exactly what and when you're supposed to pay. I would look into registering with CIBC to view your account online, and if needed, give CIBC a call!

That is where must card holders have a problem ! As it is my opinion that the credit card Genius Team lack understanding in really how long the wait times are? So when you state you would consider calling ,it is out of ignorance of what the problem really is? Calling ? Is that a joke of some sort or lack of understanding on your part?
creditcardGenius Team

April 6, 2022
Hey Edward, We understand that wait times are incredibly long right now. We've heard customers waiting in excess of 2 hours, some even never getting through to an agent. While the wait times are long, if a customer is having issues with payments not appearing in their account after multiple days, that needs to get sorted ASAP. Not taking action until customer support wait times are shorter could mean leaving a balance unpaid, which could start generating interest and potentially have a negative hit against your credit score. It's no fun being on hold with customer support, we understand that. But we also understand that many of these issues are urgent and need to be resolved sooner rather than later.
Edward HC Graydon
Edward HC Graydon

ASAP is the right terminology to apply when dealing with all banking issues really but in fact the best approach is" divine patience" regardless of banking institution. As the wait times are destructive to the industry as a whole. So when you state that one should call it seems obvious advice. But regardless of card issuer the wait times in the banking industry are getting longer. Sooner is not what customers are getting. But in fact the complete opposite and that is the real issue that most customers hold as a concern .
creditcardGenius Team

April 11, 2022
Hey Edward, "Divine patience" can be a great solution to many problems, especially regarding overwhelmed customer service teams. Ultimately, the solution regarding banking and finance is to go right to the source, the bank or financial institution. They should always be able to get your issue sorted. Sometimes it may take a few calls, a branch visit, or back and forth communication, but they are most often the solution (especially regarding things like statements, log in info, etc).

I am particularly prone to detail in what I owe to the banks by way of unsecured credit ,I am obsessed about the details! But that is because I have the time and inherent mindset that allows me to do so. Not everyone as the time or inclination to do so. If one does a particularly great amount of purchases online and at the retail level it will be inevitable that the card holder will be dissatisfied with a purchase leading for the need to talk directly to a customer service rep ! In the case of all the banks it seems it was intentional while laying off so many tellers I remember back in 2019 how quickly banks where restructuring branches. But it now seems pathetically incompetent on the part of CIBC to have not staffed the phone centre with another 500 representatives. All the banks are prone at this time to asking customers for “patience! As we are exsperiencing higher than expected calls” The problem is that the pandemic is no longer an acceptable reason for long delays! And out of all the banks regardless of reasoning the CIBC Costco credit card of which I happen to have and am a custumer can state that regardless of my relationship. They are extremely slow and seem unprepared, in hindsight they probably should have given that more thought. They have a tendency lately to apologies for "the longer then anticipated wait times” while not addressing the issue, that the attention to detail and customer service by Capital One was in fact superior. Hence the dissatisfaction being held by quite a few Costco members.

Hey Ron, It sounds like you've got the wording mixed up. The CIBC Costco cardholder agreement reads that the maximum liability for the Primary Cardholder is $50, unless gross negligence is evident. Meaning, if you do your best to protect your card and PIN and it gets compromised or stolen, then the card is charged $150 the Primary Cardholder is liable for a maximum of $50. The card issuer (in this case, CIBC) is liable for the remaining charged amount. You can read more about this article.

An important issue with the new CIBC Costco card is that your automatic payment is NOT transfered from Capital One to CIBC. Every month since I got the Costco-Capital One card, the monthly payment is made automatically from my Tangerine chequing account. NOT ANYMORE. I just find out that I missed the payment due in March since the automatic payment is not set with CIBC anymore. They are charging me interest since I miss my payment in March. There was no way to pay it except by setting up an acct. with CIBC, which I did, B-U-T so far there is no sign of my payment. The amount owing is there, but NOT my payment!&%$@%

Not sure why others are having trouble because I was able to open the CIBC online banking just fine. In terms of the Credit Card benefits, I just learned (see below) that because of the relationship between CIBC and Parkland Gas Stations "Journie Rewards", you can get an added benefit of some cents of the gas price by linking your card (should you not be able to gas up at a Costco). Similar to RBC and Petro-Canada's "Petro-Points". ********************************** Sent: November 11, 2021 at 5:09 a.m. ET Save up to 10 cents per litre on gas with CIBC and Journie Rewards Did you know? You can save up to 10 cents per litre on gas at participating Pioneer, Fas Gas, Ultramar and Chevron locations by using your linked CIBC card with Journie Rewards. Save 3 cents per litre with every fill-up. Plus, save an additional 7 cents per litre every time you reach 300 Journie Points. At participating locations. Other conditions apply.

This is ridiculous that I can't see my statement online until I get my new card allowing me to register with CIBC. I do a lot of purchases online and I'm not comfortable if I can't see a real time statement of what's being charged to my account. There is no way I should be expected to blindly pay CIBC for 6 months when I have no idea if all the charges are even mine. This infuriates me. If CIBC can arrange for our current BMO card to work for purchases then they should be able to arrange we can register online with them using that card............until we receive our new card in August.

I have spent hours trying to get registered online with CIBC. The system does not recognize by Capital One Mastercard number. Several long hours on hold without every getting to talk with anyone. The card numbers is also not recognized when I punch it in on the phone. I went to a CIBC branch which was another waste of time and Costco suggests that only CIBC can resolve any issues. I hope this gets resolved before I am charges interest on my account that I’m unable see or pay. I’m very disappointed that CIBC has not reached out to frustrated cardholders admitting there are issues and an update as to what they are doing to correct the problems.

Not seamless at all. Total pain in the #$&@. Received email from CapOne in Feb that my automatic payment will be made on March 4. On March 11, received an email from CIBC that the Mastercard has been changed on March 3 (my payment did not go through). Now my CC is in arrears; better not get charged interest. Now I find out that I have to call CIBC to set up Autopay; they don’t have something easy to set it up online. Waited on the phone for 1 hour and 20 minutes yesterday before giving up. Called again today and the message said the wait time is over 60 min. I’m sorry, but this is total BS. I’ll be looking into other options.

The transition has been anything but smooth! Called on March 4th as my Capital One card has issues (working and not) and I couldn’t register on the mobile APP. CIBC agent told me transfer was done but can only be done on Monday and to call back. Called Monday and waited 90 minutes before getting disconnected. Went to Twitter and received replies to call back… good luck as many other people reported no one answering. Did resolve the registration issue by using a PC to register. Called back and hung up after waiting an hour! Another issue is statements… I can access CIBC via Mobile, but my statements including last one are not available 🤔. As a last resort, I went to a CIBC branch to ask them to request a replacement card… only to be told I have to call back or wait till the new card arrives before August. Very disappointed that CIBC dropped the ball on this one!
