How much your rewards are worth
The dollar value of your rewards depends on the specific rewards program ‒ and what you choose to redeem your points for. For WestJet RBC Mastercard in particular, if you spend $2,000 per month, here's our estimated annual rewards earned depending on which reward you choose:
| Flights | $246 |
Calculating your annual rewards
$24,000 annual spending x 1.03% return on spending = $246 annual rewards
$246 annual rewards − $39.00 annual fee = $207 net annual rewards

WestJet RBC Mastercard review
Looking for an easy way to earn WestJet points on every purchase? The WestJet RBC Mastercard will do so for a low annual fee of $39.
Here's what this card has to offer, and how it compares to its bigger brother – the
Earning rewards with the WestJet RBC Mastercard
This credit card bears the WestJet logo, and as such you'll be earning WestJet points on every purchase you make.
Earning WestJet points on purchases
So what will you earn on your purchases? Here's what you'll get:
- 1.5 WestJet points per $1 spent on WestJet or WestJet Vacations purchases
- 1 WestJet point per $1 spent on all other everyday purchases
100 WestJet points are worth $1 in savings with WestJet.
Using your WestJet points
What can you use those WestJet points for? Pretty much anything WestJet-related.
For many, getting a free (or reduced) price on a WestJet flight will be option #1. You can use WestJet points to help pay for the cost of any flight, including taxes and fees. However, you'll need to redeem at least 2,500 points towards a flight.
WestJet vacation packages are another way to use your rewards. You'll need to redeem at least 5,000 points when you want to redeem for a vacation package. And again, you can't use WestJet points to pay for taxes and fees.
And finally, you can also redeem WestJet points with these partner airlines:
- Delta,
- Air France, and
- Qantas.
You can't book your flights directly with these airlines, you have to book through WestJet to be able to use WestJet points.
4 benefits to the WestJet RBC Mastercard
Beyond earning rewards on purchases, here are 4 things to like about the WestJet RBC Mastercard.
1. Easy to earn welcome bonus
There's a good welcome bonus at play to help kickstart your next vacation.
You'll earn 10,000 WestJet points after spending $1,000 in the first 3 months – a savings of $100 on your next trip on WestJet.
2. Companion voucher
The WestJet RBC Mastercard comes with a basic companion voucher for a trip within Canada or to the Continental U.S. Book a ticket for yourself, and you can bring someone else with you for just $199 plus the taxes and fees.
Depending on the time of year and how far you're flying, there could be some terrific savings to be had. If travel for 2 isn't in your future, you can exchange it for 5,000 WestJet points or a flight discount for 1.
Just note you need to spend $5,000 per year on your card to unlock it.
3. Travel insurance included
For a credit card with a low $39 annual fee, it still includes 7 types of travel and purchase insurance.
You can see the full details by scrolling above to the insurance section.
4. Typical RBC credit card benefits
There are also 2 basic benefits provided by all RBC credit cards for some extra savings.
First, link your credit card to a Petro-Points account, and you can save 3 cents per litre on fuel at Petro-Canada, plus earn a bonus 20% Petro-Points.
The other is with Rexall. You'll earn 50 Be Well points per $1 spent when your credit card and Be Well accounts are linked together.
2 downsides to the WestJet RBC Mastercard
On the flip side, here are 2 things you'll want to consider when thinking about this credit card.
1. Relatively poor rewards on purchases
You're only earning 1% back on (almost) all of your purchases. There are many no fee credit cards that can get you the same rewards on your purchases (and in some cases, even more).
Getting good value out of the voucher every year will more than offset this, but if you don't use it every year you're potentially leaving rewards on the table.
2. Lacklustre companion voucher
While it's a rare low fee credit card that includes a companion voucher, there are 2 things to remember with it:
- relatively expensive to use at $199, and
- it's only valid for travel within Canada and to the continental U.S.
Depending on where you're flying, this voucher may not have much value for you, so keep this in mind.
Comparison to the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard
RBC offers another WestJet Mastercard – the
Here's how these 2 credit cards compare.
| Feature | WestJet RBC Mastercard | WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome bonus | 10,000 WestJet points (terms) | 45,000 WestJet points (terms) |
| Annual fee | $39 | $119 |
| Rewards | * 1.5 WestJet points per $1 spent on WestJet or WestJet Vacations purchases * 1 WestJet point per $1 spent on all other everyday purchases | * 2 WestJet points per $1 spent on WestJet or WestJet Vacations purchases * 1.5 WestJet point per $1 spent on all other everyday purchases |
| Travel benefits | * Annual companion voucher anywhere WestJet flies in Canada and the Continental U.S. | * Annual companion voucher anywhere WestJet flies * Free checked bags on WestJet * World Elite Mastercard benefits |
| Insurance coverages | 7 types | 10 types |
| Income requirements | None | * Personal: $80,000 * Household: $150,000 |
There really isn't much of a comparison – the World Elite version is a superior card in almost every way except for the annual fee and income requirements.
So it all comes down to how much you're willing to pay for an annual fee, and whether you can meet the premium card's income requirements. The basic version has an annual fee that's $80 lower, and with no income requirements it's easier to access for everyone.
In summary
For a low annual fee, you're getting a card that earns you travel rewards, has a companion voucher, and includes a decent insurance package.

I use this card regularly and also use the companion vouchers.
Finding the points are not adding up.
I’ve had it for over a year and fly at least 5 times a year but haven’t even gotten enough points for a free flight
I have just had this card over a year. Free bags are a bonus! The yearly discounted companion voucher is a lifesaver for trips to visit my family every year.
Have been a cardmember for over 7 years. Find the biggest value is to be obtained when combining Westjet dollars with the annual Companion voucher; have used pretty much every year with substantial savings (and much easier/convenient departure dates and times with no 'black-outs'), particularly when the two are combined for a flight for two. Each of us usually requires our own piece of checked baggage so some additional savings there also. I rank this card very high with a strong recommendation, particularly for couples who enjoy travelling together.
I really like this card as I get travel dollars I can use for trips and I can also use it at Costco where I shop frequently. It lets me earn Westjet dollars everywhere I shop!!
