A big change is coming in the Canadian rewards world.

On November 22, 2021, Scotia Rewards is merging with SCENE to form the brand new Scene+ program.

What’s changing with the merger? And what’s staying the same? Here are your answers.

The new Scene+ program – what’s staying the same

Essentially what’s happening is everything you do with the current SCENE and Scotia Rewards programs is being merged into one program.

So instead of 2 separate programs – one to redeem for free movies, and the other to redeem for travel and merchandise – Scotia and Cineplex are going to run one combined program. But the details of these programs are staying the same.

This Cineplex page lays everything out in detail. Everything that’s described as “new” is simply what’s being taken over from Scotia Rewards.

Scene+ redemption options

The actual value of your points aren’t changing. Here are our current valuations for each redemption option that’s available in both the Scotia Rewards and SCENE programs.

Program Redemption Option Value Of One Points
Scotia Rewards Redeem For Any Travel 1 cent
Best Buy And Apple Merchandise 0.9 cents
Other Merchandise 0.77 cents
Gift And Prepaid Cards 0.74 cents
Donations 0.74 cents
Statement Credits 0.7 cents
Experiences 0.63 cents
Cineplex SCENE Free Movie Tickets 1.05 cents
Other Cineplex Products 1 cent
Restaurants 1 cent

How you earn points won’t be changing either. You can earn points by going to Cineplex theatres, or with select Scotiabank credit cards.

As for the credit cards, nothing is changing with them either. You’ll be earning the same number of points as before. The only difference is instead of earning either Scotia Rewards or Cineplex SCENE points, you’ll be earning Scene+ points.

What’s changing with the new Scene+ program

Honestly, nothing much is really changing (besides the fact the programs are merging together, of course).

The only big difference is that you can no longer transfer points between programs – which obviously is no longer needed.

Converting your existing SCENE and Scotia Rewards points

So, how will your current points convert?

Technically speaking, the current SCENE program is becoming the Scene+ program. For those who just have SCENE accounts, there’s nothing you have to do. Everything will be staying the same, including your points balance.

If you have a Scotia Rewards account, your points will transfer at a 1:1 ratio to Scene+. If you already have a SCENE account, your points will automatically be transferred.

If you don’t have one, a new account will automatically be created for you. There will be nothing you have to do and the details of your new account will be sent to you.

The same goes for any Scotia banking account where you earn points on debit purchases – you’ll still be earning the same amount of points on purchases, they’ll just be called Scene+.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Between November 15 to November 22, 2021, the SCENE and Scotia Rewards programs won’t be available. You’ll continue to earn points as usual, which will be posted to your Scene+ account when it opens.

Credit cards that earn you Scene+ points

Here are the current credit cards that earn either Scotia Rewards or SCENE points.

Your turn

It seems like it’s big news, but not much is really changing. The programs are merging, but pretty much everything will be the same as before.

As someone who just has a SCENE account, I think it’s a terrific change, as I’ll be able to access more options when redeeming SCENE points (although free movies will continue to be the redemption of choice).

I have a scene.ca card that I have been using for a few years I tried to register it but was unable as the code on the back had worn off. With the help of someone at Scotia bank an account was set up for me BUT despite several tries I have not been able to link my card to the new account. What can I do to get my points to my new account so I can use them

Hey Nick,

If you want, you can contact the Scene Help Centre, and hopefully they'll be able to help you directly.

I had a SCENE card before December 31st, 2021. My points were transferred to Scene+. As a add on, I spent 300 points at Cineplex with my Scene+ card for the first time.

so, today I attempted to log in to my Scene (NOT Scene+) account. It refused, called my cell, which has lived in my purse since Covid began. When at home i use my home phone. I have NO desire to have much to do with Scotia Bank so now what

Coming from a Scotia rewards card to Scene is a complete rip off. Scotia had a huge catalogue of rewards that I had access to and now all of that is gone. I can go to movies for free now. Yeh

I am the same as another user who posted on this board - My 59,821 Scotia Rewards points have yet to be merged with my sceneplus account. It is near impossible to get someone on the phone from customer service, emails are not responded to and Scotiabank says it is a software problem 'someone' is working on. I reported immediately in December, and have a case number and they just keep saying it will be resolved. Very frustrating.

Hello, Sorry to hear about your ongoing struggles. It's good that you've been given a case number, someone is working on it then. These things can take time.

My 87,000 Scotia Rewards points have yet to be merged with my sceneplus account. It is near impossible to get some on the phone from customer service, emails are not responded to and Scotiabank says there is nothing they can do.

I feel your pain. Scene is a joke to try and contact. 1hr + wait times all the time and no email response. I feel totally ripped off. I'll be canceling my Business Visa.

Based on what I'm seeing today in the catalogue, Apple and Bestbuy are not 0.9 cents per point. They are 0.69

Hello, Thanks for letting us know! The values may have changed since we last did our research. Once the programs merge on November 22nd, we'll be updating our values for the various redemption options.

Hmm, this article is incomplete. There are some benefits: Before, each Scotia card had its own Rewards balance that you had to transfer to a single card to pool them together. Now all the points will automatically land in one place, no transfers needed. Not needing to transfer points post-merger is a value increase for folks who have points in both programs. Before you took a haircut on every transfer. No transfers means no conversion losses. A merged program means one fewer loyalty program. One less currency, one less app, one less login credential etc. At a time when they are sprawling into ever-smaller bespoke offerings, it's nice to see some consolidation. There are also downsides: Scotia used to let you get points on debit transactions as long as you had one of many many different accounts. Under the new program only 4 accounts are eligible for points. Some of the secondary redemption options are being devalued. Statement credits will be devalued by a little, the Best Buy & Apple catalogues by a lot. The electronics catalogues will end up with the same redemption value as $100 statement credits (1 point = 0.69 cents).
