Flying Blue Adds Tiers to Reward Tickets

Booking a flight with Flying Blue miles is about to involve another choice.

Starting September 8, 2026, new reward bookings on Air France and KLM-operated flights will come with 3 options:

• Light
• Standard
• Flex

If these labels look familiar to you, that's because they're the same ones used for cash bookings – minus the Basic tier.

Flying Blue says the change gives members more choice over how much flexibility and how many extras they want with their ticket.

Existing bookings aren't affected, and stand-alone reward tickets on partner airlines will continue to work as they do today.

New Flying Blue rewards ticket tiers

The 3 new Flying Blue Rewards options borrow a familiar idea from regular airline fares. Each category offers a different redemption rate, with varied perks and limitations.

Light is the base-level choice, costing the fewest Miles. Under this category, economy and Premium tickets don't include checked baggage, changes, or refunds. Business Light includes one checked bag, but lounge access costs extra.

Standard adds checked baggage and allows changes or refunds for EUR €70. Business Standard also includes lounge access.

Flex offers the most freedom, with free changes and refunds, included advance seat selection, and a lower mandatory cash contribution when booking. Flying Blue status benefits still apply, so Elite members can retain perks like additional baggage or waived change and refund fees where applicable. If the cheapest Light reward doesn't include the baggage options or flexibility you need, you may have to redeem additional miles for Standard or Flex, or simply pay for these features out of pocket.

Flying Blue rewards value

With these changes, it's important to consider whether the lowest mileage price is actually the cheapest flight option for you.

Our recent Flying Blue mile-value calculations compared Economy, Premium, and Business reward bookings across 9 round-trip routes: Toronto–London, Vancouver–Amsterdam, Quebec–Paris, Edmonton–Athens, Winnipeg–Rome, Montreal–Seoul, Vancouver–Tmunic, Quebec–Hong Kong, and Toronto–Bangkok.

Across the available fares in that sample, Flying Blue Miles had an overall average value of 1.03 cents per mile.

Economy delivered the strongest average value at 1.23 cents per mile, compared with roughly 0.72 cents for Premium and 1 cent for Business. Under Flying Blue's new system, you can book Economy flights using any of the new reward tickets: Light, Standard, or Flex.

These calculations reflect reward bookings before the new Light, Standard, and Flex structures take effect.

Light, Standard, or Flex?

That depends on how you travel. If your plans are firm and you prefer to fly carry-on rather than checking a bag, Light could stretch your miles furthest. It may also be particularly attractive to status members who already receive some of the benefits not included with the Light option.

Standard provides a middle ground, while Flex makes sense if you need flexibility around flight changes. Flex is a good option if you enjoy time in the lounge, and choosing your seat in advance is a must.

You can also purchase some excluded services (like checked bags and seat selection) separately.

The key is to compare the whole ticket rather than automatically choosing whichever Blue Rewards option requires the fewest Miles.
