Best credit cards to use for streaming services in Canada

Clearly, streaming services are here to stay – growing in variety and popularity, they've changed how we consume media, and will continue to evolve over time.

But streaming services aren't cheap. Sign up for two or three of these, and you'll be spending a good chunk of change every month.

One way to save on streaming service costs is to use the right credit card. Here are 5 cards that will give you between 2% and 4% back on your streaming service payments.

And one of them even has no annual fee.

Streaming earn rate: 4%

The Scotia Momentum® Visa Infinite* Card is one of the top cash back credit cards in Canada, and will give you a strong 4% cash back on all your recurring bills, like streaming services, and groceries.

Since it’s a premium card card, you’ll also get Visa Infinite benefits that include 11 types of insurance, access to the Luxury Hotel Collection, Dining Series, and Visa Infinite Wine tasting. And, if you have a Scotiabank Ultimate Package, the annual fee is waived every year.

All this sounds great, right? Unfortunately, you only get your cash back once a year (as a statement credit in November), and there’s a spending cap on the boosted earn rate. That said, it’s a generous one, which should be enough for most Canadians.

Streaming earn rate: 3%

If you prefer flexible rewards to cash back, then the Scotiabank Gold American Express® Card, which earns Scene+ points, might be a good choice for you. You’ll get 3% back on streaming, but up to 6% back at Sobeys, Freshco, Safeway, and more.

The card also includes a dozen types of insurance coverage, comes with 24/7 concierge service, and doesn’t charge a foreign exchange fee, making it a fantastic travel card. However, we should point out the $120 annual fee and remind you that not all retailers accept Amex.

Streaming earn rate: 2%

The BMO CashBack® World Elite®* Mastercard®* recently revamped its earn rates, moving from a simple flat rate to a generous tiered system of bonus categories. You’ll notice there’s no streaming service category. Instead, you’ll get 2% back on recurring bills. So, if you set up your streaming service on a monthly payment plan, you’ll get double the base earn rate.

The card has generous earn rates for groceries, transit, and gas, but these have a fairly low monthly spending cap. We’d expect better from a card with a $120 annual fee, but extra benefits like free roadside assistance, 13 types of insurance coverage, and World Elite benefits definitely help.

Streaming earn rate: 2%

Looking for a card with a flat cash back earn rate? The SimplyCash® Preferred Card from American Express is a solid choice. You'll earn 2% cash back on all your spending, including streaming services and recurring bills. What's better is that it's increased to 4% on gas and groceries.

As an Amex card, you'll also get Amex Offers, which include access to exclusive Front of the Line events, excellent insurance coverage, and a generous welcome bonus. However, remember that not all retailers accept American Express (no earning 4% back at Costco, for instance). Oh, and your rewards are only paid out once per year.

Streaming earn rate: 2% back

Finally we have the no fee Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card.

This is a unique no fee cash back card in that you get to choose up to 3 bonus categories in which you'll earn 2% cash back.

You can choose 2 categories by default, but you'll get a 3rd bonus category if you have your cash back rewards deposited into a free Tangerine Savings Account. You’ve got lots of category options to choose from, and, yes, recurring bills (streaming services) is one of them.

As a no fee credit card, you won't find too many extra perks and the non-category earn rate is only 0.5%, but you do get extended warranty and purchase protection coverage, which are a nice bonus.

I would say getting Starz through CraveTV is not the ideal way to do it. If you subscribe to Prime you can add Starz a la carte for $5.99... So $7.99+$5.99=$13.98, which is much cheaper than Crave. The only reason to do the Crave bundle is to get HBO or if you prefer Crave content over Prime content. Also, CBC gem offers some of it's exclusive content under their subscription banner now. It's not just CBC News Network - they've put some shows behind the paywall. Lastly I'm surprised you included Crunchyroll without including Funimation. For anime fans who want their anime Dubbed, Sony-owned funimation is the way to go. It charges in USD, but is aimed at both US and Canada, and so it would pair well with the Rogers WE to cover the currency conversion fees.

Brim Financial MasterCards also gives 2% back for Amazon (not just Prime Video but all Amazon.ca), Netflix and Spotify as well. So another option, and for those that want a NO FEE Credit Card too (other than Tangerine bills category)

Hello, Yup, Brim Mastercards are another good example! Just keep in mind you're limited to certain subscription services for earning bonus rewards.
