A fan favourite in the credit card community, PC Financial Mastercards provide easy-to-use PC Optimum points on all purchases, with terrific earn rates at Loblaws stores. And it’s all for no annual fee.

But, a big change has come into effect for the big daddy of the group – the PC Financial World Elite Mastercard is now having its spend requirement enforced.

PC World Elite Mastercard enforcing $15,000 in annual spend

If you have this card, you may have already received your letter from PC.

PC Financial World Elite Mastercard holders have technically always been required to spend $15,000 annually to maintain their eligibility for the card, but it hasn’t been enforced previously.

The worst part? There was no heads up from PC Financial that this was coming. If you hadn’t spent $15,000 over the last year, your account automatically got downgraded. You had no chance to reach it.

One last catch – as of writing, PC Mastercard still hasn’t listed this requirement on their website. So if it’s a credit card you may want to consider getting, you’ve been forewarned about it.

Does this affect other no fee World Elite Mastercards?

It’s not the first time this requirement has appeared with a World Elite Mastercard.

The Rogers World Elite Mastercard started enforcing this requirement last year. But unlike PC, Rogers gave their cardholders warning that this was coming into effect.

There’s one other no fee World Elite Mastercard that hasn’t yet followed suit – the Canadian Tire Triangle World Elite Mastercard.

If it happens to this card too, we’ll let you know when we hear something.

Alternatives to the PC Financial World Elite Mastercard

Bummed about the change? Angry that PC Financial didn’t say anything beforehand?

Here are a few alternatives to the PC Financial World Elite Mastercard. We’ve also left out Amex cards, since they can’t be used at Loblaws stores – although many Amex credit cards are terrific for groceries elsewhere, especially the American Express Cobalt® Card.

This is quite an unfortunate adjustment during this year of the pandemic. I have found my overall spending reduced which makes this "stab in the back' action by the Weston organization very disappointing. A major component in credit card evaluation is the ease of redemption of one's cashback/rewards. Tangerine is by far IMHO the easiest/simplest. This small detail is very poorly explained or invisible during the evaluation process. Perhaps in the future creditcard genius could obtain and outline the reward/cashback procedures. I too am shopping elsewhere more frequently.

Hello, It is unfortunate what happened to the PC World Elite Mastercard, and there are many like you who are either frustrated or angry with PC. On our product pages we typically outline when and how you get your cash back, but it's a good idea to make that even more visible. Thanks for the suggestion! Tangerine is one of the best cash back cards in terms of getting your rewards, because they get paid out automatically every month.

This was so poorly handled by PC mastercard, not customer focused at all!! I have been using the card for 6+ years, but will move on as a result of this treatment

Hey J, You're definitely not alone in this opinion. Hopefully they can regain the trust of their loyal customers in the future.

I was quite taken aback at this sudden move by PC Mastercard. I am still mulling this over, but I am strongly considering cancelling with them on principle. The lack of notice and heavy handed nature of the communication displays a significant level of corporate arrogance.

Hey David, You're not alone in moving to cancel your account - for many it was quite shocking to see a letter saying your account is being downgraded without any warning.

Yes I also received the letter after having the card for 3 years. Not happy we were not given the opportunity to use the card for a year to meet the "new requirement-as per the letter". I will no longer use a PC MC. I will use my Tangerine MC and I get 2% back at both grocery and drugstores which is all the PC World would get me unlike the 3% I got with the Elite version. Terrible way to treat long time cardholders.

Hey Harry, That's a good idea. Set up properly, the Tangerine Mastercard can easily replace your earnings at Loblaws and drugstores compared to the PC World card.

I’ve also received my notice that my card will be downgraded. If the new card is still good for 7 cent per litre bonus at their gas bars I will just use to buy gas.

If they cancel my card I will not only stop using any of their credit cards or points card but will not shop at their stores. I can find just as good of grocery deals at food basics , Longos and Sobeys. Loblaws isnt always the best place to shop anyways.

Hey Richard, It's important to note that they aren't actually cancelling any accounts, but instead downgrading users to the next level card. A slight difference, but an important one.

Rogers at least had the decency to tell us way ahead of time they are doing this. Not only did I cancel my card with PC, I’m going to shop at their stores less.

Hey Stephen, It certainly was unfortunate that PC didn't give anyone the heads up. It seems like the lack of transparency has been causing many others to cancel their cards and move on from PC.

May be it is time that everybody should decide to ditch those cards simultaneously in protest. I am seriously thinking of ditching my pc financial card. I would reconsider if it gives me 2 to 3% for everything I charge to that card.

Hey Jay, You'd be downgraded to the World card, which offers 2% back at Loblaws stores, and 1% back everywhere else. We can't say whether or not it has a minimum spend requirement – but since letters were only sent to World Elite cardholders, it probably doesn't. At least not at this time.
