Meet the new Desjardins Cash Back World Elite Mastercard
Desjardins has released a new cash back card – the Cash Back World Elite Mastercard.
There are some good things about this card, and a few areas that are a little lacking.
The good
Let’s start with the areas where it shines.
Great cash back earn rates
The earn rates stand out with this card. You’ll earn:
- 4% cash back on groceries,
- 3% cash back on restaurants, entertainment, and transit, and
- 1% cash back on all other purchases.
However, they’re not quite as good as our top cash back credit card, the
GC: $20

Based on our typical $2,000 monthly spend, you would earn approximately $402 per year in cash back. This also isn’t as good as our top cash back credit cards, which earn around $480 in rewards per year, but it’s still competitive.
Lower annual fee of $100
While many premium cards have an annual fee of $120, this new cash back credit card has a lower annual fee of $100, saving you an extra $20.
Airport lounge access
With this card, you’ll also get access to airport lounges courtesy of Mastercard Airport Experiences. However, it doesn’t include any complimentary lounge passes, so you’ll have to pay $32 USD for each visit.
The not so good
Is it perfect? Not quite. Here are a couple of areas where things could be better.
Lacklustre insurance
The insurance coverage is limited with this card. You’ll get standard extended warranty and purchase protection, and the slightly-less-common mobile device insurance.
There’s also some travel insurance included as well:
- emergency medical,
- trip cancellation, and
- lost baggage insurance.
This isn’t an impressive list. And more than that, it only provides coverage on trips up to 3 days. Anything longer than that and these coverages won’t be in effect.
In contrast, however, this credit card includes rental car collision insurance, which provides 48 days of coverage.
No welcome bonus
Unfortunately, there’s no welcome bonus or first year free offer with this card. It’s no surprise as Desjardins cards typically don’t have welcome bonuses of any kind, but it would still be nice to get a little reward for getting the card.
