Desjardins is a credit union based out of Quebec that also operates heavily in Ontario and more sparsely throughout the rest of Canada. They also white label (same card branded differently) many of their credit cards through various other credit unions across the country.

The good news is that you can still apply for their cards throughout all of Canada even if you aren't a credit union member. The bad news is that several of their top cards give extra bonuses to members that non-members can't qualify for otherwise.

There are two things that make Desjardins cards particularly interesting:

  • They offer several cards that are "good at everything" – rewards, interest, insurance, and perks. These cards are kind of like white unicorns in the credit card world.
  • Their cards offer very comprehensive and better-than-most travel and other insurance coverage that is even suitable for aging seniors.

Two cards in particular stand out - the Desjardins Visa Modulo and the Desjardins Odyssey Visa Infinite Privilege.

The Modulo is a great entry level card that people with a decent credit score and moderate incomes. It gives a flat 1% back as BONUS DOLLARS, which can be spent on nearly anything except for actual dollar bills (but investments are possible which you can turn into cash).

It also has a permanently low 10.5% interest rate on purchases, cash advances, and balance transfers in addition to 9 types of insurance coverage. That includes rare coverage for your mobile devices. Unfortunately the travel insurance, although high quality, is only good for trips of 3 days or less.

The Odyssey Privilege is in a class of its own. You need a very high family income of $200,000 to qualify and it has a high $395 annual fee ($295 for members) – but it has basically every benefit and perk under the sun.

2% completely flexible rewards on every purchase + a 20% bonus annually for members, 9.99% interest rates all around, 60 days worth of travel insurance coverage that even works for seniors over 65, free airport lounge access worldwide, upgraded status at hotel partners, 24/7 concierge service, and much more.
