Earn up to 60,000 bonus points with the American Express Gold Rewards Card
The standard welcome bonus with the card (that rarely changes) is 25,000 points, earned after spending $1,500 in the first 3 months. It’s a value of around $500 when your points are transferred to Aeroplan.
But with the re-launch, Amex has kicked things up several notches.
First, you’ll earn 50,000 points when you spend $3,000 in the first 3 months.
Next, make a purchase between months 14 to 17, and you’ll earn another 10,000 points.
In total, that’s 60,000 bonus points, worth up to $1,200. That’s enough to cover the new annual fee of $250 for 4 years, with some change to spare.
It’s not a first year free deal however, so you will have to pay that $250 annual fee up front. But the bonus is large, and worth your while.
All about the revamped Amex Gold Rewards Card
But it’s not just the welcome bonus that’s changed – Amex has refreshed the Gold Rewards card.
You can see everything in detail here, but here’s an overview of what this card offers now.
New Amex Gold rewards
There were no changes to the rewards – everything in this department remains the same.
That means you’ll earn:
- 2 points per $1 spent on gas, groceries, travel, and drugstores, and
- 1 point per $1 spent on everything else.
However, Amex has cranked things up in the perks department…
Amex Gold perks
First, there’s the $100 travel credit. Make any travel booking with Amex Travel for at least $100, and you can save that much on your booking. It’s easy travel savings.
Next, you’ll get some airport lounge access. You’ll get a free membership to Priority Pass, a value of US$99. However each visit will cost US$32. But you’ll also get 4 free passes to Plaza Premium lounges in Canada, which are located at major airports throughout the country.
And now, it’s a rare metal credit card. It’s a nice feeling to have a solid piece of metal in your hands, rather than a piece of plastic. Plus you can choose from 2 different colours (Gold and Rose Gold).
New Amex Gold annual fee
However, these perks come at a cost. The annual fee has increased from $150 to $250. So if you take the plunge, make sure you take advantage of everything this card has to offer.

Plus, in the first 3 months, you’ll earn 3 bonus points per $1 spent (5 points in total when you include the base earn rate) on gas and travel purchases, up to 15,000 points earned, or $3,000 in spend.
Your turn
