For some people, the Costco crackdown on membership sharing has been problematic. In the past, you might not have thought much about borrowing your neighbour’s card and heading to the warehouse, but now, you might be denied (and your neighbour may get caught).

We’ll highlight the couple of options you’ve got if you’d still like to enjoy the occasional Costco haul, and we’ll cover Costco’s updated membership options. You might decide a basic membership is worth it.

Key Takeaways

  • Costco is cracking down on people who are using membership cards that belong to others.
  • Things you can do to continue shopping at Costco include going in with another member or shopping at costco.ca.
  • Costco memberships cost either $65 or $135 plus local sales taxes.

First, a personal tale on sharing a Costco membership

Funny enough, one of our team members was busted not having a membership not long ago. Here's his story:

I was volunteering with the Vancouver Asian Film Festival at the time and was getting supplies and snacks for a film shoot. Of course, as a non-profit organization, budgets are limited, so Costco and its sweet deals really help a small player like us.

Thing is, I didn't have a membership card at the time, so I bummed one off my parents. I had done it in the past without much issue, but things were about to change.

With a cartload of cookies, hand sanitizer, water bottles, and paper towels, I went on my merry way and showed them my card. Usually a little nervous, I tried to hide my dad's grinning face on the back of his card and tried to play it cool like McLovin.

Unfortunately, I was denied and they asked me to hand over the cart. After some argument, they granted me a one-time exception, but the embarrassment will be grilled into my mind forever.

What to do if you don't have a membership

If you want to shop at Costco but don't have your own membership, here's what you can do.

1. Go into a warehouse with your friends and/or family

While you can’t go into Costco with your friends’ or family members’ Costco membership alone, you can join them on their next trip.

Costco members are allowed to bring their children and up to two guests with them. Ask when they're going next, and see if they'll let you join them. (Who doesn't like having a companion at Costco?)

Then, put whatever you want to buy into the shopping cart. Let the Costco member pay for everything, and repay them once you’re out of the warehouse.

2. Simply stick to purchasing items online

You're also free to shop online at costco.ca. In fact, there are many items you can purchase without a membership.

That said, some items do require a membership, and you won’t be able to see the price until you sign in.

Say you're an Xbox or PC gamer and want to save on Game Pass. This is a better deal than simply letting Microsoft bill you directly (which would cost $29.99 for three months). After signing in, here's the price to pay.

Xbox Game Pass Core in Costco online store

For these items, you'll have to either get your friend to make the purchase for you or hope that they trust you enough to hand over their Costco login info. Don’t worry – you can still pay using your own credit card.

You won't be limited to sending stuff to their address either – it can be shipped anywhere.

3. Get your own membership

We've saved this for the end, but you can also pony up and get your own membership.

No need to worry about getting caught at checkout, borrowing a card, or going to Costco on someone else's schedule.

If you’re ready to purchase your own Costco membership, you have two tiers to choose from. The main difference is that one offers 2% back on all your Costco purchases, and the other one doesn't. Here are the basics and what they cost, not including your local sales tax.

Costco Gold Star Membership ($65)Costco Executive Membership ($130)
* Shop online and in store
* Two membership cards, for you and a member of your household
* Cancel and refund your membership if you’re ever unsatisfied
* All Gold Star benefits
* Get 2% rewards on up to $1,250 in eligible Costco and Costco Travel purchases
* Exclusive discounts and offers, including discounts on Costco services
* Costco Connection magazine
* $10 monthly credit on Costco Same-Day or Instacart deliveries

Which membership is better really comes down to how much you spend. To offset that extra $65 plus tax, you'll need to spend a total of $6,500 per year at Costco. If you're just an occasional shopper, a Gold Star membership will do.

If you're at Costco all the time, consider the Executive membership instead.

FAQ

What is the Costco membership crackdown?

Costco began cracking down on membership sharing within the last few years in the lead-up to its hike in membership prices. Some locations even installed membership scanning devices in an effort to crack down.

Can you share a Costco membership with someone not in your household?

No, Costco memberships are non-transferable. If you’d like to share your membership, you would have to bring them as a guest and pay for the transaction yourself. You can’t add them to your membership.

Is Costco membership sharing allowed?

Currently, the primary Costco cardholder is allowed to enter the warehouse with their children and up to two guests, but they can’t give the card to others to use whenever they want.

What happens if you get caught sharing a Costco membership?

Costco reserves the right to revoke membership if you’re caught (usually repeatedly) for sharing a membership. If your membership isn’t revoked, your card could be flagged going forward, so you’d have to present additional ID.

You missed a work around. Next time a friend is going into Costco get them to buy you some $25 gift cards. You can use one at a time to get a Costco day pass. If you overspend the $25 you can always pay cash or any credit card they accept. Only hassle is that you have to go to the Membership desk to be validated each time. Takes a few moments . . . but if funds are limited and you only shop there occasionally well worth it. No way to buy cheap gas at their gas bar though.

For most people, it makes sense to buy a membership but for some it does not. It did not make sense for my daughter (a single person) to have a membership as she would only shop at Costco maybe 2 or 3 times a year. The solution for her was to get Costco gift cards for xmass/ birthday and use those for the 2 or 3 times swhe wanted to go. Does the fee pay for itself? Well if you live close by, have an executive membership and buy all your gas on your Costco branded credit card like we do, then I would say yes. They ussually sell gas for cheaper than anyone else and you get 3 percent discount with the card and so over a year, that can come close to paying for the membership or more. We also buy over half of our grocerries at Costco (cheapest toilet paper and a lot of other stuff that you can get by far) and so over a year between the lower prices, rebates on the credit card and Costco membership, it more than pays for itself. This is NOT taking into account that I only use their credit card for Gas and I use another master card for all in store purchases (1/2 % more in my pocket). If I took that into account, the savings would be even greater. Add to this the very good return policy and customer service, automatic free 2nd year warranty on big ticket items, very reasonable extended warranty cost compared to others for those that want one and you have a winning proposition. How did you calculate you’ll need to spend $3,500 per year at Costco to offset that extra $60 cost for Executive membership? Is it not simply $60/2% or $60/0.02 = $3000? Is the rebate not 2% across Canada? Plus there can exclusive savings with the Executive membership.

Upgraded our membership last year before buying 2 sets of tires but even then only a marginal positive return on the additional cost for the Exec. We have the CIBC Costco MC which we use for any purchases in Canada. We spend most of the winter in Florida & while we use our membership down there we pay with a RBC USD credit card. The rep we talked to at the CS desk in Canada said that we will get the 2% credit altho that is not my understanding. Anyone have insight on this?

Hey Richard, According to the Costco website, all Executive Members get an annual 2% Reward on certain Costco purchases. Only purchases made by the Primary and Household cardholders are used to calculate this reward. The Reward coupon is mailed to the Primary member with the annual membership renewal notice and may only be used by the Primary member toward Costco Wholesale purchases.

I also have heard that to avoid membership issues. If you have a gift card, you can shop without a membership. So go buy a $50 gift card. Shop and pay for the difference with a Credit Card of your choice.

Non members can use gift cards at Costco. However, only members can buy a gift card. Gift Cards cannot just be presented at the Cash Desk. A non member with a gift card has to line up at customer service and get a one time temporary gift card using pass - each time they want to visit with a gift card. $60 is not a lot of money. My belief is that if you want to shop at a warehouse club, buy a membership. The gross membership fees are roughly equivalent to Costco's profit each year. They sell all those billions of dollars of merchandise essentially at cost - to members.
