The CIBC Costco Mastercard is now available for all Costco members to apply for. You can learn more here.

Late last year, we learned that Capital One was no longer going to be offering the Costco Mastercard. We were all left wondering who was going to take over the (lucrative, we assume) Costco credit card contract.

Earlier this year, we learned that CIBC was going to be taking over, but we didn’t have details on what the new card was going to look like – other than it was going to have no annual fee.

But CIBC has just released more details on their new CIBC Costco Mastercard.

Earn up to 3% cash back with the CIBC Costco Mastercard

We now know what the new CIBC Costco Mastercard will offer for rewards.

It’s going to be a no annual fee cash back credit card, with this to offer for rewards:

  • 3% cash back on gas at Costco and restaurants,
  • 2% cash back at Costco.ca (up to $8,000 in annual spend),
  • 2% cash back on gas at non-Costco stations (up to $5,000 total spent, including Costco gas), and
  • 1% cash back everywhere Mastercard is accepted (including Costco warehouses).

CIBC has this press release with all the details so you can see for yourself.

The good news

So, let’s start with the good. Earning 3% back on gas at Costco and 2% on all other gas is very good for a no annual fee card.

It’s also nice to see the restaurant bonus from the previous Capital One card is still present here.

And we love the bonus category for shopping online at Costco. Even though you’re only earning 2% back on up to $8,000 in annual spend, that’s still a nice bonus.

Finally, the baseline rewards are upped – you’re earning 1% back on all other purchases where Mastercard is accepted, whereas previously you earned 0.5% back on your first $3,000 in annual spend before being upped to 1%.

The bad news

So, it’s very good. But there’s one flaw – there’s no bonus for shopping at Costco warehouses.

This was the one big thing we wanted, and it doesn’t look like we’re going to get it, which leaves us quite disappointed.

So, many of our best Costco credit alternatives are still valid if you do a lot of shopping at Costco.

For example, the Brim World Elite Mastercard will get you 2% cash back on everything – including Costco. Just note this rate applies to your first $25,000 in annual purchases (you get 1% afterwards).

It does have an annual fee of $199 (which is waived for the first year), but when you shop at a Costco Warehouse, you’re earning double in rewards.

Here are a few other top credit cards you could consider, with varying rewards and annual fees.

What else we know about the new CIBC Costco Mastercard

We have a few more details besides the rewards.

Changeover details

The official changeover will be in March 2022. All existing Capital One Costco Mastercards accounts will be transferred over to CIBC at that time, and you’ll start earning the new benefits, even before you get your new card (which may not happen until the end of August).

Your credit limit will remain the same, and any pre-authorized payments you have don’t need to be changed.

If you want this card but don’t have the Capital One card, you’ll be able to apply for it in March 2022.

If you want the earliest access possible – you can still sign-up for the Capital One card now. When the changeover happens, you’ll be among the first to get the updated benefits of the CIBC Costco Mastercard.

Some insurance will be included

The card will also feature some insurance. It’ll include mobile device insurance, an insurance that’s becoming more popular. It will also icnlude basic extended warranty and purchase protection.

CIBC installment plans will be available

If you need some help spreading out bigger payments, this card will be able to help.

It will feature CIBC Pace It – CIBC’s credit card installment plan, which can help spread out bigger payments. You could get lower interest rates when you agree to payment plans on larger purchases.

Your turn

Overall, there’s quite a bit to like about what this new credit card will offer – sadly, it’s not going to offer a bonus when shopping at warehouses. It definitely does offer an upgrade over the previous Capital One card.

But that’s our opinion – what’s yours?

What do you think about CIBC’s plans for their Costco Mastercard?

Hey Marilyn, Sorry to hear about your experience! Unfortunately, if you are an authorized user of a CIBC card, you have view-only access, and according to their website, only the primary cardholder can make changes to the credit card. However, the bank should be able to provide more information specific to your case. Hopefully the new card will get things resolved!

The biggest drawback I see and will miss is the foreign transaction fees. There were NO foreign transaction fees for the Capital One card (consistent with their brand). I travel a lot back and forth to the US, and it was so convenient to have a card that I could use without the typical 2.5% foreign transaction fee for every transaction. To some, it may not seem like much, but it is a perk I will for sure miss.

Hey Bryan, Since you travel back and forth to the US a lot, a no foreign exchange fee card makes perfect sense for you. Although, the Capital One Canada cards do have exchange fees, up to 2.5%. Their no foreign exchange fee cards are their American cards. Take a read through our Best Foreign Exchange Travel Credit Cards In Canada For 2021 for some great no foreign exchange fee cards. Any idea what the difference is between the “CIBC Costco MasterCard” and the “CIBC World MasterCard?”

Hey Matt, At this time it doesn't look like CIBC offers a World Mastercard (we haven't heard anything, at least). We'll have to keep our eyes peeled for CIBC begins offering a new credit card.

I’m not sure why you think this is an upgrade. Cashback bonuses are the same - other then the 0.5% on the first $3,000. It doesn’t take long to reach $3,000 so that’s not really an issue. No one seems to care about loosing the travel insurance coverages?? That is a much bigger issue especially when you get the cashback when using the card to book a trip then all the different travel coverages.

Hey Dave, It's definitely not a 100% good change, but there are some positive aspects. As you pointed out, the insurance coverage is going down and for some that's a really big deal – but not so much for people who don't really care about insurance. Thanks for sharing!

What I want to know is, what will the maximum cash back amount be? It is currently $1,000 but I am hoping the amount will be a bigger cash back amount.

Looks like a slight upgrade overall. Best feature is apple and google pay are confirmed. Also like adding another big bank to my overall banking setup. Problem is without In store Costco Cashback on card my family should get another MC (prob. BMO world elite) as primary card. My understanding is that this card is meant to compete with premium or high end cards. Limits were very limited with capital one. Time for a premium version to come out solve the gap or part of it…my goal is to carry one card only!

Hey Mike, While we can't be certain, CIBC credit cards can be used with Google Pay right now. Because of that, we would assume the new Costco card will be compatible as well.

It appears from the story that with the 'automatic transfer' from Capital to CIBC MC a customer will have to be without the physical card for up to or for sure, 5 months, bf receiving it. That means one cannot gain the perks by was using the card at different vendors besides Costco. CIBC then saves by not having to give additional benefits for that period. Am I missing something here?

Hey Carrie, Our understanding is that you'll be able to use your existing Capital One card when the transfer happens. It will act like your CIBC card until you get your new one in the mail.

Costco accept any mastercard Card. I use my tangerine mastercard (even if it gives me only 0.5%) when I shop at Costco.

Agreed, it is disappointing to see the Costco instore benefit is minimal. Even 1.5% would be much more compelling. Curious as to why you do not include Rogers World Elite Mastercard as a preferred card with its 1.75% rate, no annual fee, and a solid insurance package. Seems better to me than some of the 5 you listed. What is the drawback? Tech Guy in BC

Hello, The big reason we don't include the Rogers World Elite is because you're required to spend $15,000 per year on it or you lose eligibility. It's a good option - but it only earns 1.5% cash back on purchases.

Thanks for the information Stef. I'm very disappointed, 1% in warehouse purchases isn't enough to make me put this card in my small wallet. I have a Capital One and I stopped using it long ago. Can just they take the example of Canadian tire cards. The World Elite CT MC gives almost 4% in CT stores and a lot more with no annual fee.

So I will use the new Costco card for gas and use my Rogers no Fee Mastercard for Costco in store purchases as I believe this gives me 1.6% cash back or there abouts. As for Costco on line - more expensive than in the store, no instore pick up and for me not a go to destination for on line shopping.

So happy to see the new Costco card. I have an over 800 credit score and have a very good monthly income but they would not increase my credit limit above $3000. There was some kind of discrimination happening there as we are seniors. I have a Scotia Visa with a $10,000. limit so cannot understand that attitude from them. Hope your company will look more kindly on us. I have been charging up to almost $3000. a month on the Capital One Costco card presently, that is why I wanted $5000. limit.

What is the procedure to get access to your rebate cash? Monthly? Yearly? Is it simple and monthly as is Tangerine MC and Rogers MC?

So when you say no bonus at Costco Warehouses you want something more than the "1% cash back everywhere Mastercard is accepted (including Costco warehouses)." What are you thinking it should be?

Hey David, We like what they did with costco.ca. You can earn 2% back on your purchases, but it would have been better if that 2% (even if it's limited to $8,000 in annual purchases) applied to any Costco purchase.
