WestJet is eliminating their Basic fare class in favour of a more limited (and cheaper) one called UltraBasic. The fare does not include access to the overhead bin, which means UltraBasic travelers are only entitled to board with a personal item that fits under the seat in front of them.
There are a few more restrictions that come with the new (downgraded?) fare class, and essentially makes it like what a low cost carrier offers. Let’s dig into the details – and see how you can get some added perks with a WestJet credit card.

What WestJet's UltraBasic fare offers
WestJet's UltraBasic fare is taking the place of its Basic fare – and as the name implies, it doesn't offer much beyond a seat.
Here are the fare details:
- No overhead bin access. Anything you bring on board must fit under the seat in front of you. If your itinerary takes you across the Atlantic or Pacific, you will get bin access.
- No rewards. You won't earn any WestJet dollars with these fares.
- No seat selection. You can't select your seat at check-in and you'll automatically be assigned a middle seat at the back of the plane.
- You'll be the last to board the aircraft.
You'll still be able to purchase checked bags and pay a fee to select seats in advance of your trip.
This fare downgrade comes at the same time as Air Canada announces an upgrade for economy travelers. It’s likely designed to compete with ultra-low-cost carriers, of which there is currently only one in Canada: Flair.
