The Walmart Rewards Mastercard can’t be missed when you’re in-store at any Walmart, especially when checking out.

Offering 1.25% back in Walmart rewards on Walmart purchases (1% on all other purchases), the card aims to save you money when shopping at Walmart.

And while there are better credit cards for shopping at Walmart (led by the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card), it still is a good card for shopping at Walmart stores.

Earn 2% cash back on every purchase with no income requirements:

However, there’s some news on Walmart Mastercards. Thanks to RedFlagDeals user (Bean), we now know that there’s a new Walmart Mastercard coming in September 2020.

New Walmart World Mastercard details

Yes, it’s a World Mastercard, with improved earn rates, and still no annual fee.

From this RFD forum, here’s what we know so far about this card.

The card will be earning Walmart Rewards at these rates:

  • 3% at Walmart.ca,
  • 1.25% on gas and in-store at Walmart, and
  • 1% back everywhere else.

It’s definitely a step up, and you won’t be able to match the 3% earned online at Walmart.ca, especially with a no-fee card. Earning an extra 0.25% on gas is also nice.

And since it’s a World Mastercard, you’ll need to meet minimum income requirements of either $60,000 personal or $100,000 household to qualify.

However, that’s all we really know at this time about the card. It’s not available yet through Walmart’s Mastercard site. But when we find more information, we’ll let you know.

I applied and received a Walmart Rewards - World Mastercard thinking it will be like any other credit card, to my surprise, they have the worst customer service you can think of. If you are going on a trip with this card, beware! They randomly block my card and refused to unlock it until I mail (yes, postage mail) them a government-issued ID. They said it will take them 10 business days to unblock the card. I have had a block on another credit card, a simple call resolved the issue. My advice is don't apply for a Walmart credit card, if you do, make sure that you have an alternative credit card at all times and are ready for their bad service.

Hey James, Thanks for adding your experiences so others can be aware of some pitfalls to Walmart Mastercards.

I have very much enjoyed my Walmart Rewards card for many years, and I was excited to see this new card introduced...until I saw the minimum income requirement. Sorry, but it seems quite backward to have such a stipulation. Most shoppers at Walmart are obviously of lower income households and in need of bargains (myself included - I'm on a fixed disability income), including Walmart Reward Points. So, why would there be a minimum income limit to own a "World" Walmart Credit card where people who already have a comfortable income get the higher Rewards Points? I think a better stipulation for qualifying for this card should be reliability in consistently paying our bill each month. ~ Disappointed.

This is unfortunate, but it is a requirement of any World Mastercard, and it's not just limited to this new credit card. Hopefully, Walmart will have something in place where existing cardholders will be able to more easily qualify.

I also received an offer to upgrade a few weeks back. I was quite excited just to be able to upgrade to a black card. It was done by email to me and me accepting the offer which I did. They even had an image of the card with my name written on it! Cards going out in September email said.

Has Walmart confirmed this or just speculation from RFD?

This hasn't been confirmed by Walmart, however several RFD users, along with one of our own readers, have posted they got an offer for the new Mastercard. We find RFDers to be quite knowledgeable, and rarely wrong when it comes to things like this.

I already have the other Walmart Mastercard I do like it but I think the new one is only targeted at people that want to purchase things off the Walmart. CA website to earn that 3%. I used to like their website but now it's not just Walmart you're ordering from and the website is completely frustrating and never accurate. If their website was better I probably would upgrade to the new card thought I can't see me doing it anytime soon.

It's nice to see new offerings. I'm not sure how popular this card will be though. It has a high personal income requirement relative to it's main client base. Having worked at Walmart before, I believe it would be highly uncommon for someone to qualify. For those that do, the main selling point is it's Walmart.ca rewards rate. You can already get 1.25% on unlimited spending in store for No Fee with Amex SimplyCash (their base no fee card) which still gives a better return everywhere else at 1.25% flat across the board. /OR/ *IF YOU SHOP AT A WALMART SUPERCENTER THAT QUALIFIES* you can get an even BETTER in store rate of 3% on the first $500 with the BMO Cashback No Fee card. The BMO card also has a lower redemption requirement than even Walmart's normal existing Rewards card, and if a family has more spending to do at Walmart, both spouses could each get one to double up, so I'd say for many that's the best option. Both the BMO and Amex cards have extreme low or no income requirements which means a lot more people will qualify. So in my opinion, get this Walmart card just for Walmart.ca if you spend enough there, but in the meantime grab one of these other 2 for in store shopping. And you can get them now without waiting. :)

Thanks K.S.! You have provided some great alternatives to the Walmart Mastercards, that also provide better rewards everywhere else people shop.
