After much waiting (almost 4 years now!) the new Aeroplan program is finally here.
And at its side are some trusty Aeroplan credit card companions, including refreshed offerings from TD and CIBC, and brand new credit cards from American Express.
There are plenty of standard benefits that all these cards have (learn more about those here), but for now, here’s what these new Aeroplan cards earn for welcome bonuses and on all your purchases.

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite
First let’s go over the most popular Aeroplan credit card available – the
It has a unique 2-step welcome bonus. First, you’ll earn 10,000 bonus points after your first purchase. Then if you spend $1,000 in the first 3 months, you’ll get an Air Canada Buddy Pass.
What’s a Buddy Pass, you may ask? It’s a one-time companion voucher you can use anywhere Air Canada flies within Canada, the U.S., and Mexico.
Simply book one flight for yourself, and bring someone else with you for just the taxes and fees. Just note that once you get the Buddy Pass, you only have one year to use it.
As for earning points on your purchases, you’ll get:
- 1.5 points per $1 spent on gas, groceries, and Air Canada, and
- 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases.
These earn rates are very similar to what they were before the update, except you don’t earn bonus points on drugstore purchases.
However, the annual fee is now $129, up from the previous $120. The first year is still rebated for all new cardholders – and if you have the TD All-Inclusive chequing account, the annual fee is rebated every year.
TD also has 2 other Aeroplan credit cards you can take a look at. They are the:
- TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege
- TD Aeroplan Platinum Visa
American Express Aeroplan cards
American Express discontinued their AeroplanPlus cards back in August of 2020 to make way for 2 brand new Aeroplan cards.
Here’s the overview of both of them.
American Express Aeroplan Card
First, their entry level card – the
To start, you’ll earn up to 15,000 bonus points – 9,000 after spending $1,500 in the first 3 months, and another 1,000 points every month you spend $500 in the first 6 months. And it comes with an Air Canada Buddy Pass after spending $1,500 in the first 3 months.
On all of your regular purchases, you’ll earn:
- 2 points per $1 spent on Air Canada,
- 1.5 points per $1 spent on restaurants, and
- 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases.
One point to note – this is a charge card. While very similar to credit cards, it has 2 distinct differences:
- the balance needs to be paid in full every month, and
- the card has no pre-set spending limit.
As for the annual fee, you’re looking at $120. And if you want to add authorized users to your account, there’s an interesting quirk to what you’ll pay.
If you want to extend the Air Canada benefits to the authorized user, you’ll pay an extra annual fee of $50.
Or, you can pay no fee instead, and authorized users can just earn extra miles without getting the benefits. The choice is up to you.
American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card
Amex also has the
Starting off with a top welcome bonus – you’ll earn 35,000 Aeroplan points and a $100 statement credit after spending $3,000 in the first three months. Plus, you’ll earn 5,000 bonus points every month you spend $1,000 in the first 6 months, for a grand total of up to 65,000 bonus points.
It also has extra earn rates on purchases:
- 3 points per $1 spent on Air Canada,
- 2 points per $1 spent on dining, and
- 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases.
There is a high annual fee associated with this card of $599.
And, like the base Aeroplan Card, you get a choice of annual fee for authorized users. Extend the Air Canada benefits to them for $199, or pay no fee and simply accumulate more points.
CIBC Aeroplan credit cards
CIBC is the other issuer of Aeroplan credit cards.
Here are the 3 credit cards they issue:
