The CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card is an Aeroplan credit card offered by CIBC that earns plenty of Aeroplan points and has a long list of travel benefits, including a comprehensive insurance package.

Here is a look at its pros and cons, plus a comparison to some of the other Aeroplan cards offered across Canada.

In this article

Pros of the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card

Because this is a travel credit card, a lot of the benefits centre around things you can use on your next vacation – including Air Canada savings, insurance, and rental car discounts.

1. Earn plenty of Aeroplan points

Aeroplan credit cards are known for their ability to accumulate Aeroplan points fast. This card is no slouch, picking up points at a rate of:

  • 1.5 points per $1 spent on gas, EV charging, groceries, and Air Canada
  • 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases

2. Massive welcome bonus and first-year perks

This card includes a big welcome bonus of 10000, 10000, 20000 Aeroplan points. This is worth $800 on future Air Canada flights, getting you on the fast track to a free flight.

In addition to this, the normal $139 annual fee for this card is waived for the first year.

3. Free first checked bags

One of the best perks of having an Aeroplan-branded card is the free checked bags. With this card, you can get your first bag free, plus a free checked bag for up to 8 companions on the same reservation.

4. Air Canada and Aeroplan savings

Because Aeroplan is tied to Air Canada, you'll not only get boosted earn rates on Air Canada purchases made on the card – you'll also get a better rate when cashing out.

Air Canada will waive additional airline surcharges and you'll also get an extra night free for every 3 nights booked on hotel redemptions made through Aeroplan.

5. Rental car benefits

One small perk that can be helpful on travel is this card's rental car benefits. You'll get a free upgrade to Avis Preferred Plus, which means:

  • Expedited service
  • Exclusive offers
  • Free upgrades when available

Cons of the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card

There are 2 downsides to getting the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card. One is a big hangup while the other is subjective.

1. High income requirements

To qualify for this card, you'll need to meet the income requirements of $60,000 individual or $100,000 household. This is standard for Visa Infinite credit cards because of all the perks and benefits you're bound to get, but it can push the card out of reach for some.

2. It's only worthwhile to redeem your points with Air Canada

Aeroplan points are valued at 2 cents each when redeemed with Air Canada, so it's always best to cash them out that way. There are other options, like merchandise or gift cards, but your points aren’t valued as highly when redeemed that way.

Comparison to another Visa Infinite travel card

The most obvious comparison for this card is its competitor from TD, the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card

* 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases
* 1.5 points per $1 spent on eligible gas, electric vehicle charging, grocery and direct through Air Canada purchases
* 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases

Other benefits* Free first checked bags (up to 8 other guests included)
* 4th night free at hotels booked through Aeroplan
* Avis Preferred Plus upgrade
* Free first checked bags (up to 8 other guests included)
* NEXUS fee waiver every 48 months
Insurance12 types12 types

The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card is pretty much equal in nearly every respect except the perks. People who frequently travel to the U.S. will like the NEXUS rebates, whereas the CIBC option has a little bit more included in terms of free nights and Avis benefits.

In the end, both cards are quite close and it's nearly a toss-up in terms of what benefits you prefer.

This is my first time using the CIBC Aeroplan infinite. Ive had the equivalent Amex cards for years. The big thing I notice is that if you need to call them, you will need to wait an hour at least for CIBC. Amex gives premium card holders a special number to call.

But the big problem I had was that they locked my card for some reason and wont tell me why. All they will say is that I need to come into a branch. ...... but Im in Asia until Christmas.

These cards are expensive. Not super happy about letting it sit idle for 4 months.

This card is not generous at all for welcome bonus compared to TD. You really have to read the fine prints and all of the details of their insurance coverage to realize that you pay an insurance that will in most case not cover your situation, compared to the TD card, this card is really bad for insurance and perks for the same yearly fee. CIBC's customer service is something you don't want to deal with. CIBC is greedy and not generous with its customers. If you want a visa infinite with aeroplan points, I'd pick TD instead. CIBC does have however a no yearly fee version of the aeroplan card which can be interresting for every day purchases.

This card NO LONGER lets you into the Air Canada Lounge. I was rudely refused after being told at the lounge desk in YYZ. Should have a 1 off exception to let people get in one last time instead of being embarassed in a huge line.

Never had any issues with card being cancelled or not accepted and I travel 3-4 countries per year.

I have just recently gotten this card. As it happens I had to make 3 larger purchases over 2 weeks ( computer, fridge, dryer) and none of them went through. For the first two at physical store locations the card didn't work, no reason given, it just wouldn't work. The third time was online, CIBC sent me a text message asking me if I jusŧ tried to make a purchase. I answered yes and finished the purchase only to find out the next day that the purchase had been cancelled. After phoning Cibc they tell me that it should (not would) work next time. Apparently they have an automated security system that stops large purhases on cards that don't have a history of large purchases. Bit of of a catch 22 there. Anyway, I"m only keeping ŧhis card because they waived the fees for the first year and gave me 20,000 miles as a sign up bonus. I'm dumping before the year is out: customer service did nothing to help and this card is untrusworthy. I have a feeling that transactions will be refused at the worst possible time and I'm not paying a yearly fee to charge nickel and dime stuff. Whoever put the security system in place needs ŧo be demoted.

I have had this card for good 20 years. It is not that good for travel, especially abroad. I found that one can get cut-off suddenly, which is nothing pleasant. Last few weeks, I had to call them twice and none of my purchases very even somewhat suspicious. Duty Free shop at the airport, where you have to flush your passport and boarding pass, candy shop with the purchase value of 7 CAD. After that, over 40 minutes talking to three different people from three different departments, answering numerous questions, some going pretty far ( 15 years ) back. THis card is getting cancelled as soon as I am back from Europe. Why should I have this credit card if I needed to carry good chunk of cash, just in case that the card got declined. And Aeroplan is not what it used to be before.
