The Scene+ program has been taking Canada by storm lately. It’s like it was a nobody who suddenly became popular on the first day of the new school year.
Rocking a new haircut, new jeans, and looking for attention, they caught the eyes of one of the most popular kids in the class – with Scene+’s 2022 partnership with Sobeys, they rocketed to the top of Canada’s rewards scene, and they’re not stopping there.
Case in point: Scene+’s new partnership with Home Hardware.
Scene+ and Home Hardware just announced a new partnership happening in the near future, which is sure to please all the amateur handymen across the country to hoard even more tools and home improvement materials (yes, dad, I’m talking about you).

When does Scene+ partner with Home Hardware?
This is probably the question on everyone’s mind. Home Hardware is set to join the Scene+ program some time in the summer of 2023. This means you’ll have plenty of time to buy tools and materials for some ambitious summer 2023 projects and eventually procrastinate enough to magically transform them into summer 2024 projects.
Home Hardware has over 1,000 stores across the country, so this isn’t some regional party – people all across Canada can take advantage of redeeming and earning points on their home renovation purchases.
When does the Home Hardware/Aeroplan partnership end?
If you’ve always shopped at Home Hardware, you’ll know that their previous partnership was with Aeroplan.
Unfortunately, if you’re reading this and you don’t own a Delorean, it’s too late. Home Hardware customers had until March 31, 2022 to collect Aeroplan points on their purchases.
That said, they mentioned that you can still redeem your Aeroplan points for Home Hardware gift cards until further notice. As a side note, you can also currently redeem your Scene+ points for them as well.
Earning and redeeming Scene+ points at Home Hardware
Things will be a little bit different in the relationship between Home Hardware and Scene+. With Aeroplan, you were only able to earn points at Home Hardware, but with Scene+, you’ll be able to redeem your Scene+ points as well. So if you’re inclined to trade in your movie ticket for a shovel, you’re good to go.
As of the time this was written, there was little more information we could find. Most of the information in their Scene+ FAQ section mainly reiterated that they would be around some time in the summer of 2023, but more details may come out as we approach the highly anticipated launch date.
Best credit cards to use at Home Hardware
Scene+ cards aren’t the only credit cards that you’ll want to use when you’re shopping for your next rake or can of paint.
Our vote for the best credit card in Canada, the always-amazing American Express Cobalt Card, never fails to hog the spotlight, but we’ll skip that for now and focus on a Scene+ card.
Earn the most Scene+ points at Home Hardware (or anywhere else)

If you’re looking to redeem Scene+ points at Home Hardware, this credit card is good as gold. It’s the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card – a well-known card with excellent earn rates on Scene+ points.
Here’s a snapshot of what you can expect:
- 6 Scene+ points per $1 spent at Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo and more
- 5 Scene+ points per $1 spent on groceries, dining, and entertainment
- 3 Scene+ points per $1 spent on gas, select streaming services, and transit
- 1 Scene+ point per $1 spent on foreign currency purchases
- 1 Scene+ point per $1 spent on all other purchases
That’s good for an average earn rate of 2.45%.
One thing that really stands out is its welcome bonus, though. You’ll earn up to 50,000 Scene+ points after spending $2,000 in the first 3 months and $7,500 in the first year. Do a little bit of math and you could max out at $500 in the first year alone.
Other goodies that come with this card include:
- no foreign transaction fees (most credit cards will tack on an additional 2.5%),
- a first-year annual fee waiver (saves you $120),
- Amex offers such as Front of the Line access, and
- 12 types of insurance.
Lastly, there's a nice little bonus on us. Right now, you can earn an extra $60 in GeniusCash, which is enough to at least take a chunk off another year's worth of annual fee, or a new leaf-blower, if you're into that sort of thing.
Interesting alternative with a spending category specifically for Home Hardware

This credit card does not include Scene+ points, but if you had no interest in earning them, but did have an unhealthy obsession with gardening equipment, we had to mention the Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card.
Why? This cash back credit card is flexible, meaning you can choose which categories you get bonus cash back in.
With this credit card from Tangerine, you can earn 2% cash back on 2 categories of your choosing, or 3 categories if you have your cash back deposited into a Tangerine savings account.
Here are the categories in all their glory:

As you can see, Home Improvement is one of the categories that you’re eligible to earn extra cash back in, and if you have a specific 2 other ones that you tend to spend a lot on, this is the card for you.
You’ll get all of this for no annual fee and without having to meet any insane income requirements.
This credit card also comes with a GeniusCash offer of $125. If that doesn't make this card more tempting, we don't know what will.
Looking for something a little bit better? There’s also an upgraded version of the credit card called the Tangerine World Mastercard. If you meet the income requirements ($60,000 personal or $100,000 household), you’ll be treated to better insurance coverage (4 kinds as opposed to 2), lounge access, and the World Mastercard experience.
