The TD Rewards Visa* Card is a no fee credit card with a strong welcome bonus, valuable purchase insurance, and allows cardholders to earn TD Rewards points on all their purchases.

Earning TD Rewards points

There are plenty of TD Rewards points to be earned with this card. Starting off with its welcome bonus, if you're a first-time cardholder, you can earn 15,152 bonus points after keeping your account open for 90 days.

That's an excellent start, but on a day-to-day basis, you'll be able to earn a ton of TD Rewards with their everyday earn rates:

  • 4 points per $1 spent on travel booked online through Expedia For TD
  • 3 points per $1 spent on groceries, restaurants, and public transit
  • 2 points per $1 spent on recurring bill payments, streaming, digital gaming, and media
  • 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases

The TD Rewards program is very flexible in terms of what you can redeem your points for, so you'll be in for a treat when it comes time to redeem your points.

Pros and cons of the TD Rewards Visa Card

The TD Rewards Visa Card is a nice starter card with very few requirements, making it a good choice for people who are just starting their credit card journey or for students looking for a first credit card after graduating.

Positive aspects of the TD Rewards Visa Card

To start off, we'll talk about how easy it is to get (and keep) this TD Rewards credit card. There is no annual fee that needs to be paid, and no income requirements to speak of. So compared to the higher-end TD First Class Travel® Visa Infinite* Card, it'll be much easier to get.

The earn rates aren't bad for a no fee card, and you'll also get mobile device insurance, which although not as rare as it once was, is still a nice perk to have.

It's nice to have easy point-earning and redemption with Expedia for TD as well.

Potential downsides to having the TD Rewards Visa Card

When it comes to comparing it with the upgraded version (the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card), there is no contest in terms of which card is better.

You'll get twice as many points with the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, as well as much better insurance coverage (12 compared to 3 for this card). It also comes with an annual travel credit of $100 that you can use towards hotels and vacation packages at Expedia For TD.

You also won't get some of the other perks like a big welcome bonus, TD Travel Credits, or annual birthday bonuses.

So long as you meet the income requirements for the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, ($60,000 personal or $100,000 household), it'll be smooth sailing. If you're worried about that card's $139, just know that you can have it waived with the TD All-Inclusive Banking Plan.

Redeeming TD Rewards points

Once you've collected enough TD Rewards points, you'll be able to redeem them for a whole host of categories. These include:

  • travel via Expedia for TD,
  • any other travel,
  • education,
  • Amazon,
  • gift cards,
  • statement credits, and
  • merchandise.

You should know that not all categories are worth the same amount in terms of redemption value. To maximize the TD Rewards program, you'll probably want to use your points towards Expedia for TD.

Here's a list of TD Rewards redemption options for a quick comparison in terms of cents per point value:

The extras that come with the TD Rewards Visa Card

Rewards aren't the only thing this card has going for it.

For no extra cost, you'll be given 90 days of purchase protection and up to 1 additional year of extended warranty insurance coverage, allowing you to shop with peace of mind. But there's more – one big insurance coverage that this card has is $1,000 towards mobile device insurance. With our lives basically revolving around our phones these days, it's a godsend.

And you'll get some pretty great discounts as well.

One small benefit for travellers is that you'll also get discounts off the lowest available base rates on car rentals at AVIS and Budget car rentals – 10% in Canada and the U.S., and 5% internationally. You'll also earn 50% more in TD Rewards and Starbucks Stars when you get your caffeine fix.

FAQ

That being said, the TD Rewards Visa Card is easier to get and does not have an annual fee.

What is the best way to redeem TD Rewards?

If you use your TD Rewards Visa Card to collect TD Rewards, your highest-level redemption option is through Expedia For TD. Here, you can get 0.5 cents per point.
