How much your rewards are worth
The dollar value of your rewards depends on the specific rewards program ‒ and what you choose to redeem your points for. For Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard in particular, if you spend $2,000 per month, here's our estimated annual rewards earned depending on which reward you choose:
| Shopping at Amazon.ca | $246 |
Calculating your annual rewards
$24,000 annual spending x 1.03% return on spending = $246 annual rewards

Our review
If you’re a frequent Amazon shopper, it might be worth taking a closer look at the Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard. With no income requirements, no annual fee, and some basic purchase protection coverage, it offers some good perks while costing nothing to keep in your wallet.
Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard earn rates
This card comes with a generous welcome offer of 5% in Amazon Rewards for Amazon.ca and Whole Foods Markets purchases for the first 6 months (up to $3,000 in spend).
After that, you’ll earn:
- 2.5% in rewards on purchases at Amazon.ca or Whole Foods Markets if you have an Amazon Prime membership,
- 1.5% in rewards on Amazon.ca and Whole Foods Market purchases if you don’t have a Prime Membership, and
- 1% in rewards on all other purchases.
Rewards are automatically loaded into your Amazon account once you’ve earned $20, and you can then use those to pay for part or all of your Amazon.ca purchases when checking out.
And this is the only way to use your Amazon rewards, so they’re a little bit limited.
Other features of the Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard
What other features does this card have?
Complimentary insurance
This credit card comes with 2 types of complimentary insurance:
- 1 year of extended warranty, and
- 90 days of purchase protection.
Earn rewards on foreign transactions
You can also earn extra rewards on foreign currency transactions, at the following rates:
- 2.5% if you have a Prime membership, or
- 1% if you don’t have a Prime membership.
The card does charge a foreign transaction fee of 2.5%, so the rewards you earn on those just offset all or some of this fee.
Save on rental cars
If you use this credit card to rent from Avis Rent A Car or Budget Rent A Car, you’ll save a minimum of 10% off the base rental rates in Canada, and a minimum of 5% in the US.
Start using your card as soon as you’re approved
Also, if you apply for the card you can start to use it immediately upon approval, rather than having to wait for a physical card to be mailed to you. It’s a little thing, but it’s a nice thing.
Verdict?
If you have an Amazon Prime membership, this credit card is worth having for its 2.5% return on Amazon purchases for no annual fee.
You could pair this with another rewards credit card to increase your return rate on non-Amazon purchases.
Some top no fee options include:
Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card BMO CashBack® Mastercard®* Brim Mastercard MBNA Rewards Platinum Plus® Mastercard® SimplyCash® Card from American Express
If you don’t have an Amazon Prime membership, there are other rewards cards that have a better return rate, better insurance coverage, and more flexibility. So, it’s worth shopping around if you don’t want to pay for a Prime membership.

I signed up for this card to get the $50 (if I recall correctly) credit for my Amazon account. I never opened, activated or otherwise used the card when it arrived.
Months later, I get a bill for it with my Amazon Prime membership charged to it. I never switched my default payment.
After half a day of phoning MBNA and Amazon support, I requested to be told where in the service agreement it stipulates that your default payment method for Amazon Prime would change to the Amazon MBNA Mastercard, as this is what I was told.
Eventually, I was directed to a Help page on Amazon's website, where this is stated. The Help page is buried in at least 3 sub-menus, and the specific help page does not appear in the list of frequently used help pages.
I find this incredibly dishonest and not ethical. I cancelled everything including the card, Prime and will not spend a cent more with Amazon.
Follow up to my previous review - TD/MBNA have now admitted that there is an issue with rewards payouts. They are working on a fix with no time line. They say in the meantime they will be manually adjusting points for past and future transactions that are not rewarded properly. We shall see.....
I noticed I wasn't getting the full 2.5 points per dollar with my transactions at amazon.ca Sometimes I would get 1 point per dollar.
I called MBNA - they said they would look into it.
A month later I called back and was told not all transactions are "eligible" for the 2.5 points per dollar.
If you look at the terms and conditions it doesn't differentiate.
There is no way to determine which transactions get which points.
Only if there is a "CA" on the statement item will you get the 2.5 points per dollar.
Customer service did give me 2000 points as a good will gesture but insist there is nothing wrong.
I have submitted a case with the Better Business Bureau to have them either fix this or stop the deceptive marketing and update the Terms of Service.
Great card for travel if you're a Prime member. No annual, works perfectly in google wallet or apple pay (not sure what the other dude was referring to). Charge FX fee but reimburses it via amazon gift cards in the order of 2.5% thus no fx fee. Only draw back; customer service at banker's hours.
You can basically only use this on amazon. You can't use it for anything else. I've tried. I can't load it into apps, no Apple Pay enabled, I can't even buy gas with it.
The app? Dogshit. The customers service? So bad I can't believe it's real. Never EVER get this card. If you got it, delete it.
