There's a new way to earn WestJet Rewards points.

Ever since early 2024, you've been able to spend your WestJet points on a Sunwing vacation. Now, you can also earn points on Sunwing packages.

But there's still a ways to go before it will truly feel like WestJet Rewards can be used seamlessly with Sunwing. After all, WestJet only finalized the acquisition of Sunwing back in May of 2023.

Here's the lowdown on how you can use WestJet points with Sunwing. Buckle up – this can be messy.

Earning and redeeming WestJet points with Sunwing vacation packages

Redeeming WestJet points on Sunwing vacations has quietly been around for quite some time (since early 2024).

Starting September 10, 2026, you can also earn WestJet points on Sunwing vacation packages.

You can earn 1 point per $1 spent on packages booked through Sunwing, except on taxes and fees. Every person needs their own WestJet Rewards number to collect points – each person on the booking only earns points if their WestJet number has been provided.

What about flight-only bookings through Sunwing?

This is where things get really tricky and can be confusing. The Sunwing airline no longer exists – all Sunwing flight operations were folded into WestJet in May 2025.

To improve passenger experience, all planes formerly operated by Sunwing (including those from Swoop) have been revamped and now feature the same seating layout found on the regular WestJet fleet. You may see some planes still flying around with Swoop or Sunwing branding, but rest assured they're all WestJet on the inside (and all painting should be finished in 2026).

Here's the catch – while all flights labelled as Sunwing are fully operated by WestJet now, you cannot purchase them through WestJet. They are operated by WestJet, but marketed by Sunwing (remember this for later). For business purposes, Sunwing is a separate company.

This means that WestJet flights for sale through Sunwing cannot be purchased over at WestJet – or vice versa. In fact, if you look at some airport guides and the destinations they fly, they say WestJet operates direct flights to many sun destinations. However, many of these can't actually be booked through WestJet itself.

At this time, you cannot redeem or earn points if you simply book a flight at Sunwing. Many airports only have WestJet flights that can only be purchased through Sunwing. There's no way around it.

As an example, here's a trip from Halifax to Puerto Plata. The Halifax destination guide lists WestJet as having direct flights to Puerto Plata.

WestJet does sell flights to Puerto Plata, but nothing direct. They connect through Toronto.

Using your WestJet Elite status

There is good news if you have WestJet Silver, Gold, or Platinum status: All your day-of-flying benefits are now available on flights booked through Sunwing.

Once you check in for your flight through WestJet, your benefits will be available, including free checked baggage and priority airport services. Just note that you cannot use seat selection vouchers on Sunwing bookings.

Where all this leaves WestJet RBC Mastercards

The final question many of you may have is: where does this leave me with WestJet RBC Mastercards?

Both the WestJet RBC Mastercard and the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard do have bonus earn rates on Sunwing purchases (these came in November of 2025). And we've shown you where you can and can't use your WestJet points.

But what about the benefits your card comes with? We'll look at a few things.

Companion vouchers

Both cards come with companion vouchers, and you can use them in a few ways. The key detail for both is that for a set fee, even though you can bring a companion and pay only the taxes and fees, you can't use them on Sunwing-only flights.

You can also exchange these vouchers for a discount on the base airfare for 1 person, but you still can't use it on a Sunwing flight. For these 2 options, your flight has to be operated and marketed by WestJet. Sunwing flights don't meet that criteria.

To use them, you'll have to turn to these options:

  • For the WestJet RBC Mastercard, you can exchange it for 5,000 points.
  • The voucher with the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard has 2 options. You can turn it into a $200 voucher for WestJet or Sunwing vacation packages, or exchange it for 2 airport lounge passes.

WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard free checked baggage allowance

First, note that booking a vacation package with Sunwing gives each person a free checked bag.

But flight-only bookings? Not so much. Even if you have the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard, which includes free checked bags on WestJet flights, it won't work.

For this benefit to take effect, your flight has to be purchased with your card, and "WestJet" or "WestJet Vacations" must appear on your credit card statement. That won't happen when you book through Sunwing.
