Walmart World Mastercard review

For the frequent Walmart shopper, the Walmart Rewards World Mastercard offers a high rate of return on purchases made in store and online at

For no annual fee, getting up to 3% cash back is pretty impressive. But is it the best credit card you can get for shopping at Walmart?

Here's what this credit card has to offer.

Earning Walmart Rewards

With this credit card, you'll be earning Walmart Reward Dollars. You can use your Walmart Dollars to help pay for any purchase you make at Walmart, right at the cash register.

Here's what you'll earn for rewards,

  • 3% online at,
  • 1.25% in store at Walmart and on gas, and
  • 1% back on all other purchases.

If you spend a lot at, you'll really be racking in the rewards. But, there's a catch to earning rewards at Walmart. You only earn rewards on the PRE-TAX amount. Most other credit cards earn rewards on the total transaction.

So, taking an average sales tax of 13% in Canada, that means the real earn rates when compared to other credit cards are:

  • 2.65% online at, and
  • 1.1% in Walmart stores.

The online earn rate is still decent, but the earn rate inside a Walmart store is almost average now.

Other benefits of the Walmart World Mastercard

There's a few other benefits that come with having this card.

You'll get basic extended warranty and purchase protection for new purchases made with the card. This can help cover your new purchases for up to an extra year.

And this whole package comes with no annual fee.

Walmart Rewards World Mastercard downsides

However, that's the extent of what this card provides.

Since it's a World Mastercard, you'll need either a personal income of $60,000 or a household income of $100,000 to qualify for this card.

You're also limited to using rewards while shopping at Walmart, but as a retailer that sells almost everything, it won't be hard to use them.

And as mentioned earlier, the earn rates are slightly lower than advertised when compared to other credit cards in Canada.

A better cash back credit card family to consider

Want to earn more rewards, anywhere (except for shopping online at

The Amex SimplyCash family could be up your alley. You'll earn more cash back everywhere you shop, including at Walmart (and yes, Walmart accepts American Express cards).

Since it has no annual fee, you can use the Walmart World Mastercard for your purchases at, and one of these 2 cards everywhere else. Or if you only want to carry around one card, stick to one of these 2 cards.

First, there's the . For an annual fee of $99, you'll earn 2% cash back on every purchase you make.

Or if you prefer to get another credit card with no annual fee, there's the . You'll earn 1.25% cash back on all purchases made to the card.

And both of these cards have better insurance coverage and perks to boot.
