PC World Mastercard review

Fact Checked
Fact Checked
Accuracy is important to us so this article has gone through a thorough 3-stage review process and fact-checked by our team.

The mid-tier card of PC's no fee cards, the PC World Mastercard offers increased rewards when shopping at PC stores (like Loblaws, No Frills, Superstore, and Maxi), along with Esso and Mobil. It's also a rare World Mastercard in Canada with no annual fee.

Getting PC Optimum points

Every purchase you make with your card, no matter where you shop, will earn you PC Optimum points. This card advertises higher earn rates for shopping at PC-brand stores. Keep in mind that these rates include what you can earn with any PC Optimum membership, which can be obtained for free and presented alongside any credit card.

These are the true earn rates for this card:

  • 20 points per $1 spent at PC stores
  • 10 points per $1 + 10 points per litre at Esso
  • 10 points per $1 spent on all other purchases

These are quite good for a no fee card, but as a store branded card, the PC World Mastercard won't earn you bonus rewards outside of PC grocery stores and Esso or Mobile gas stations.

Using your PC Optimum points

Using PC points is pretty straightforward. Every 10,000 points you redeem will save you $10 at the register at any Loblaws store as well as Shoppers Drug Mart.

But that's not your only choice – you can also use them at Esso or for statement credits.

Esso actually provides the best value for PC points through free car washes. 10,000 points gets you a free car wash of your choosing. How much they cost depends on where you live, but they can cost up to $15, providing a 50% boost over free food. Of course, there are only so many free car washes a person can get, but it's still excellent value.

You can also use them for free fuel – redeem 4,000 points and you'll save 10 cents per litre, on up to 40 litres.

Lastly, there's credit statements. We don’t recommend using your points to pay your credit card bill. 10,000 points saves $7 on your bill. And no matter how many points you use, you have to make your minimum payment in cash, not in points.

Pros to the PC World Mastercard

Here are a few things we like about the PC World Mastercard.

1. No annual fee

This credit card won't cost you a thing to keep in your wallet. You'll get the high rewards at Loblaws stores, and a 1% return on everything else.

2. Easy upgrade to the World Elite Version

Want more rewards but don't meet World Elite income requirements? You can use this card as an avenue to upgrade. PC Financial hasn't shared exactly how much you need to spend, but once you spend enough, you should get an invitation to upgrade from World to World Elite. World Elite cards typically have an annual fee, but the PC World Elite Mastercard is free.

3. World Mastercard benefits

Even though you won’t pay an annual fee, you'll still get standard World Mastercard benefits.

Cons to the PC World Mastercard

Here are a few things to keep in mind.

1. Limited insurance

Yes, this is a no fee card. But, as a World Mastercard, it's a little lacking in this department, only including extended warranty and purchase protection insurance, which are the basics most credit cards include.

2. World income requirements

There are also some income requirements to meet. You'll need either a personal income of $50,000 or a household income of $80,000 to qualify.
