The Marriott Bonvoy Rewards Program

Before we get to the card, let’s go over the program.

This is the loyalty program for all Marriott hotels with brands that include:

  • Marriott,
  • Delta,
  • Renaissance,
  • Sheraton,
  • Four Points by Sheraton, and…
  • Westin to name a few.

Points are earned based on the amount spent per stay (converted to USD) at a hotel, and vary based on the hotel brand – and they can be used in many different ways:

  • To stay at any Marriott hotel. Taxes and fees are all covered as well. Book a room with points for a five-night stay and the 5th night is free! At select hotels, you can either use points or cash to upgrade your room.
  • To book travel through the Marriott Bonvoy program with no restrictions or blackout dates. Taxes and fees are also covered.
  • Or, you can transfer your points (usually on a 3:1 basis) to more than 40 airline programs (Aeroplan is one of them). As a bonus, for every 60,000 points you transfer, Marriott will give you an additional 5,000 airline miles for free – a 25% bonus.

There are a couple of other uses for points, but these three are the biggest ones.

If you’re a traveller, Marriott Bonvoy is a valuable rewards program with a variety of options in how you wish to redeem your points.

Credit card perks

There are also a couple of Marriott Bonvoy perks included with this card:

  • receive complimentary Silver Elite status,
  • upgrade to Gold Elite status when you spend $30,000 in each year,
  • get 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year that can be used towards attaining the next level of Elite status, and
  • enjoy a free night after your anniversary each year, with a room rate of 35,000 points, a value of up to $290!

Redeeming Points For Best Value

Earning one point per dollar spent doesn’t seem like much – but when you dig a little deeper, you’ll discover that each point is quite valuable. We’ll evaluate the return of this card in three ways:

  • using your points for hotel stays,
  • booking flights through Marriott, and
  • converting them to Aeroplan.

1. Using Points for hotel stays

To find the value of a point, we surveyed 89 Marriott hotels from around the world to get a good idea of its worth. A great feature of using your points for hotel stays is they also cover any taxes and fees as well.

All hotel stays were for a 3-night stay from Thursday to Sunday booked 3 weeks in advance, using the program’s flexible preferred rates.

We came to a value of 0.97 cents per point (to remove outliers, we removed the highest lowest results of each region). On an average $2,000 month spend, your rewards work out to 48,000 points annually for a value of $465.60. Subtract the annual fee of $120 and your annual return is $345.60, or 1.44%.

But the value was not equal among all regions, but it is similar. Here’s the breakdown of value by region:

2. Booking flights

Points can be used to book any flight on any airline with no blackout dates.

A quick survey of various flights revealed a point value of between 0.04 to 0.54 cents.

While this is a convenient way to book flights as you don’t have to pay for anything, the value is generally not as good as using them for hotels. But then again, it does present another good way to use your points.

3. Convert Points to Airline Programs

Points can be converted to many different airline programs. We’ll evaluate the return using the Aeroplan & Avios programs, where 3 Marriott Bonvoy points are worth 1 Aeroplan mile.

The following table shows various Aeroplan & Avios point values and the return for each one. Transferring to Aeroplan is done in increments of 60,000 points to maximize the value of the 15,000 point bonus – and the percent return is also based on the 30,000 dollars spent to get those points (this is on the base spend only).

Aeroplan/Avios Point Value Total value based on 25,000 Aeroplan miles Percent return based on $30,000 spend Annual Return less Annual Fee
(based on $24,000 spend)
1.5 cents 375 1.25% $300
2 cents 500 1.67% $400
2.5 cents* 625 2.08% $499

*the 2.5 cent Aeroplan return is used to calculate rewards at creditcardGenius for this card

Depending on what you are able to get for your Aeroplan points, this can be an even better return than using points for hotels stays. If you can consistently get more than 2 cents per Aeroplan mile you can get an even better return on your spend and is one of the top Aeroplan cards available.

Doing any or all of the following can increase your point value:

  • Fly as far as you can within a point zone.
  • Book far in advance and fly on points at peak travel times when flights cost more.
  • Consider flying business or first class. Flights can cost 5X more in dollars but sometimes only cost 2X the points as economy.
  • Add a free open jaw (get off the plane in one city and back on in another city). Some airlines allow this.
  • Add a free stopover that forms a triangle with your departure and destination city. Some airlines allow this.

The Bottom Line

While seemingly an average card on the surface, after digging we found a card that has some great perks and a multitude of redemption options.

The free annual hotel stay more than pays for the annual fee, and having flexible travel points makes the rest of what you earn easy to redeem.

With many options on how to use your points, as well as some great program specific perks, this is one of the most versatile travel credit cards available in Canada and definitely worth taking a look at.

I just got a Bonvoy Amex for my business and had been looking forward to redeeming my welcome points of 70,000, because I used to redeem points for 10,000 a night at nice hotels in Vancouver. To my shock I discovered they had recently changed the points it takes for one night to 60,000-80,000 at all Marriott and Delta hotels in Vancouver, even at low season!! So disappointed, and I will be cancelling it to get another business card. Avoid the Bonvoy cards, as they are no longer the best.

thanks for the detailed review. I had a small question regarding the annual free night. Do you acquire it the moment you get the card or is it starting the second year? Thanks!

Hey Mark, great question. You get the annual free night starting on your 2nd year. You should see it within 8 weeks of your card's anniversary.

I recently got this card and have already put enough on it to get the bonus. I’ll like to get my next card. I have excellent credit score. Which one do you recommend? Any cards that compliment this one? Taking the family to Disney next year and hoping the points will pay for flights and hotel

Another top card to consider pairing it with is the Amex Cobalt, which is our best overall rewards credit card. You'll earn up to 5 points per $1 spent, and get plenty of flexible options to redeem for travel as well. You can learn more about it here: https://creditcardgenius.ca/credit-cards/american-express-cobalt For other top travel cards, they can be viewed here: https://creditcardgenius.ca/best-credit-cards/travel

Hi there, Thanks for the great review of the Mariott Bonvoy card. I have been approved and am just waiting for my card to arrive in the mail now. Just wondering which card would be best to refer my husband to? If I understand correctly, I am able to refer another Amex card to him and receive points because of this? Which card is the best for accumulating airline points? My goal is to use my Bonvoy card for hotels, and then use his card for flights. Thank you!

Hello Taylor, Your Amex referral link only works for the same card you got it from. So for your Marriott card, you'll only get bonus points for referring someone to apply for the Marriott card as well. If you're still interested in another Amex card for airlines points, the Amex Gold Rewards card is the best card for them in Canada. While it collects Amex Membership Reward points, you can transfer them to 6 airlines, including Aeroplan at a 1:1 ratio. There's a host of other ways you can use them as well. You can find more info on this card here: https://creditcardgenius.ca/credit-cards/american-express-gold-rewards Hope this helps!

Hello CCG Team! Thanks for providing great info! Just wondering what your opinion is to transfer my Amex Personal Platinum MR points (75,000) to Bonvoy and then to Korean Air or ANA? Thanks! Henry

November 22, 2019
Great question Henry, That would be our second best choice for transferring your points. The first option you could look at is transferring them to Delta (for use on Korean) or Aeroplan (for ANA). The transfer ratios are much better: 4 MR points become 3 Delta SkyMiles and it's 1:1 for Aeroplan. You can sign up for free accounts with both of these programs and see if the flights you're looking for are available through their booking service. However if either of these 2 programs don't seem to have what you're looking for, then go ahead and transfer them to Marriott first. Both airlines transfer Marriott points at a 3:1 ratio. No matter how you transfer your points, make sure your MR points are worth at least 1 cent each when you actually go to redeem. Otherwise, it would be best just to pay for any flight you want on your card and use your points to pay for it, as they're worth 1 cent each this way. You can learn more about Membership Rewards here: https://creditcardgenius.ca/blog/amex-membership-rewards/ Hope this helps!

Hi! If one gets both the Bonvoy personal card, and the Bonvoy Business card in the same year, does that mean 30 elite nights are credited to the account ? Or would the 15 elite credits only be received once?

Hi Ian, that's a great question. According to the footnotes of the Marriott Bonvoy personal Amex, you can only receive a maximum of 15 Elite Night credits, even if you have more than one Marriott Bonvoy Consumer or Small Business credit card account. Thanks for asking!

This is true in Canada. In the US you can stack up to 30 nights if you have a small business card and a personal card. Not sure why Canadians are always shortchanged on benefits and bonuses compared to American offers.

I have the business Bonvoy card and am looking for what to pair it with on the personal side? How does this card stack up against the Cobalt for reward value and earning? I like that the bonvoy has the 2x points of "everything else" but Cobalt has 1.2 transfer rate to bonvoy rewards - can't wrap my head around which is more valuable.

The Cobalt card, in general, would earn more points and give you more value overall compared to the Bonvoy card. But what's great with pairing the two is, as you mentioned, your ability to transfer your MR points to Marriott Bonvoy.

I travel a lot for work. My employer pays for my flights, I pay for my hotel and try to stay primarily at Marriott properties. I am trying to decide which card is best for me, I travel exclusively with Air Canada. Aeroplan? Amex? Thank you

Hi Elena, thanks for reaching out. Since your employer pays for your flights and you stay primarily at Marriot properties, then the Bonvoy card could make a lot of sense. When it comes to hotel rewards, it’s one of the best options available for Canadians. But, it's always good to compare cards, which you can do on our compare cards page.

Hello there! Love the site!! I currently have the SPG branded Amex any idea how long it will be until they send out the fancy Bonvoy Amex cards? Just curious! Thanks for all of the fantastic information on here. I have truly revamped my wallet and am earning rewards like never before.

Hey Janet, I'm so glad creditcardGenius has served you well. This really makes me happy to hear. :) We just got notice yesterday that the new card images have officially been refreshed. After reaching out to customer service, they informed me that the new card designs will be sent out when your old card expires, or if you send in a replacement request. It's important to keep in mind though that the replacement card will have a new card number, so any automated payments you have set up will have to be fixed. All the information we have so far is in our latest news post.

What are your thoughts on using the cobalt card as a primary then transferring points from Amex to SPG then to Aeroplan ?

January 21, 2019
Although you get a 5:6 transfer ratio when transferring your Membership Rewards to SPG, you're getting roughly a 30% loss in point value, since SPG points are worth less than Membership Rewards. Also, you only get 1 Aeroplan mile for the value of 3 SPG points, so you're losing even more point value in the long run. You're better off getting the American Express Gold card, which allows you to transfer your Membership Rewards at a 1:1 ratio to Aeroplan.

When Chase cancelled the Marriott Rewards Visa and offered me the SPG Amex card, I originally thought that it was not such a good deal since it did not have the 0% FX which the MR Visa had. I pondered over it for a few weeks and finally decided to get it. On line application was fast and easy and I had my new card within 2 weeks. It's worth the $120 for the first year perks (25,000 Starpoints/75,000 Marriott Rewards points). That's a lot of free hotel nights, well worth the $120. I'll try it for a year and then decide to either keep or cancel. Since there's no way I will ever spend $30,000 per year, I will not qualify for Starwood Gold.

Hi there, What do you plan on using the card for? The Cobalt card offers better overall rewards, but the SPG's current offer is also hard to ignore. Either one would be a good pair to a no fee card to make sure you're covered if Amex isn't accepted.
