This is especially true for American Express® Aeroplan®* Cards. They’re going to look nothing like they do now.
You can’t apply for them now (more on that later), but here’s everything you need to know about the new Amex Aeroplan Cards.

American Express® Aeroplan®* Card
The first of 2 new personal Cards being offered, the American Express® Aeroplan®* Card is the replacement for the previous American Express® AeroplanPlus®* Gold Card.
This new Card looks nothing like the old one, except for its annual fee, which is staying the same at $120. Here’s what this new Card will be offering.
Earning Aeroplan points
A lot of Aeroplan points will be coming your way when you use this Card. Here’s what you’ll earn on all of your purchases:
- 2x the points on eligible purchases made directly with Air Canada®* and Air Canada Vacations®*,
- 1.5x the points on eligible Dining and Food Delivery purchases in Canada, and
- 1x the points on everything else.
If you spend frequently with Air Canada or on eating out, you’ll be seeing a lot of points coming your way.
Free checked bags on Air Canada flights
Everytime you fly with Air Canada, you’ll enjoy an eligible first free checked bag. And it’s not just for the Cardmember, this benefit extends to 8 other people travelling on the same reservation.
With a checked bag starting at $30 one way, you’re saving at least $60 on every round trip flight you take with Air Canada.
Earn Elite Status Qualifying Miles
This Card can help you earn Aeroplan Elite™ Status. For every $10,000 in eligible net purchases charged to the Card, you’ll earn 1,000 Status Qualifying Miles and 1 Status Qualifying Segment.
If you fly frequently, these extra Qualifying Miles can help you get to the next Status Level with Aeroplan.
A choice in fees for Additional Cards
Do you tend to get Additional Cards for your account? You get a choice as to whether you pay a fee for them or not.
If you want to share the Air Canada travel benefits with the authorized user, you’ll have to pay the extra $50 for an Additional Card.
However, if you just want to collect points with the Additional Card, you won’t have to pay the extra fee for the Additional Card.
It’s a surprise twist, and nice to gain some additional flexibility in the fees you pay.
This is a Charge Card
This Card isn’t a regular credit card, but a charge card. And while it acts and looks the same as a regular credit card, it has 2 distinct differences:
- There is no pre-set spending limit (no credit limit), and
- Balance needs to be paid in full every month.
Having no pre-set spending limit on purchases gives Cardmembers flexibility when making purchases.
A Card made from reclaimed plastic
As part of Amex’s commitment to sustainability, the Card is made with 70% reclaimed plastic, helping to cut down on waste.
American Express® Aeroplan®* Reserve Card
There’s one other new personal card coming – the American Express® Aeroplan®* Reserve Card.
The direct replacement for both the American Express® AeroplanPlus®* Platinum Card and the American Express® AeroplanPlus®* Reserve Card, it’s going to have a pile of high end benefits, and even better earn rates. It’s going to have a higher annual fee of $599, but will also have a lot more perks and benefits.
Here are the key features of this new Card.
Earning Aeroplan points
The earn rates are higher with this Card. There’s an opportunity to earn up to 3 Aeroplan points per $1 spent on eligible purchases:
- 3x the points on eligible purchases made directly with Air Canada®* and Air Canada Vacations®*,
- 2x the points on eligible Dining and Food Delivery in Canada, and
- 1x the points on everything else.
No other Aeroplan branded Card will be offering 3x the points on Air Canada purchases.
Air Canada airport benefits
Having this Card will get you front of the line access when flying with Air Canada. A host of priority services are waiting for you:
- Priority check-in,
- Priority boarding, and
- Priority baggage handling.
All these benefits let you skip long lines, and reduce how much time you’ll have to spend at the airport.
Free First Checked Bag
The perks with checked baggage don’t end with priority baggage handling (a real big time saver when you’re waiting for bags after a flight).
You’ll also get free eligible checked bags, for not only the primary cardholder, but also for up to 8 others travelling on the same reservation.
Complimentary access to Air Canada Maple Leaf LoungesTM
If all those other Air Canada benefits weren’t enough, you’ll also get to relax before your flight in an Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge.
You’ll be able to access any Maple Leaf Lounge in North America for free anytime you’re flying with Air Canada.
Airport lounges are great quiet areas for relaxing in comfortable chairs and enjoying some food and drinks before setting off.
Exclusive benefits at Toronto-Pearson International Airport
Travel frequently through Toronto-Pearson airport? An elevated airport experience awaits you while you have this Card.
You’ll get:
- Access to an expedited security lane,
- Complimentary valet service,
- Parking discounts, and
- Savings on car care services.
Annual Worldwide Companion Pass
Want to score some big time flight savings? This Card includes an Annual Worldwide Companion Pass.
Earn a companion pass after spending $25,000 in net purchases that can be redeemed to buy an accompanying Air Canada economy ticket for a companion at a fixed base fare from $99 up to $599 depending where you are travelling to (plus taxes, fees, charges and surcharges).
Play your cards right, and this alone can pay for a big chunk of the annual fee.
Earn Status Qualifying Miles
With this Card, you’ll see even more Status Qualifying Miles and Segments. For every $5,000 in net eligible purchases, you’ll receive 1,000 Status Miles and 1 Status Qualifying segment.
It’s a simple way to reach Aeroplan Elite™* Status faster every year.
You can decide how much of a fee you want to pay for Additional Cards
For those of you who like to get Additional Cards for your account, there’s a choice when it comes to how much of a fee you want to pay for them.
If you want to share some of the Air Canada travel benefits of your Card, you can pay $199 per year for Additional Cards.
However, if you simply want to collect more points, you can get free Additional Cards instead.
Get a premium metal card
To get a premium feeling, this is no ordinary card made of plastic.
It’s a metal card, precision cut, weighing 13 grams. It’s engraved with all of your information on it.
