About the creditcardGenius scholarship

creditcardGenius (a WeyMedia Inc. business) proudly announces the 7th year of providing a scholarship available to Canadian students enrolled in full-time undergraduate or graduate studies. We're looking for a student committed to academic excellence, with outstanding academic achievement, no matter what field of study they are in.

The chosen student will be awarded CA$2,000 which may be used towards the cost of their studies, helping them get a head start on their personal finance journey as young adults.

We understand that it has become increasingly difficult for today's younger generation to finish their studies without carrying large amounts of student debt or credit card debt. As such, learning important money lessons and personal finance habits has become more important now than ever.

Founded in 2017, creditcardGenius has been dedicated to teaching Canadians that being good with money can be easy and fun. Through educating Canadian consumers on how to use credit cards responsibly, financial dreams are within reach after all.

Students can reach their full potential and financial stability. And we want to help in giving the future generation of working men and women a chance to do so by alleviating some of the financial burdens that come with pursuing their studies for an extended period of time through this bursary.

creditcardGenius scholarship qualifications

In order to qualify for this scholarship, the student must:

Be a graduate or undergraduate student enrolled and attending a Canadian university or college, and in at least the 2nd year of their post-secondary studies.
Demonstrate academic achievement with a minimum GPA of 3.5 (or equivalent).
Submit an essay in Word or in a PDF file telling us your relationship with money in 500 words or more.
Be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada.

Scholarship deadline: October 3, 2025

You can apply for our scholarship starting on October 5, 2024. The application deadline for our graduate and undergraduate scholarship is 11:59 PM Friday, October 3, 2025 (Atlantic Time).

The recipient will be notified within 3 business days of the deadline and will be contacted at the email address provided at the time of application. Up to 3 attempts will be made to contact the recipient within 3 business days following our decision. If the recipient does not or cannot accept the scholarship, for any reason, it may be forfeited and a new recipient selected, at our sole discretion. We are not responsible for the failure of any reason whatsoever of any recipient to receive notification or for us to receive the recipient's response.

The chosen recipient will be announced on or before Friday, October 24, 2025.

Scholarship terms

The creditcardGenius 2025 Scholarship Canada (the “Scholarship”) is being funded and fulfilled exclusively by creditcardGenius (a WeyMedia Inc. business) (the “Business”).
The following persons are NOT eligible to receive the Scholarship: Scholarship applicants (“Applicants”) who provide any false information to the Business at any time.
To be eligible for the Scholarship, an Applicant must:
1. be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, who have reached the age of majority in their province or territory of residence at the time of entry;
2. be a Canadian student registered in full-time undergraduate or graduate studies at a Canadian university or college;
3. be at least in their second year of post-secondary studies;
4. be committed to academic excellence, with outstanding academic achievement in any field of study;
5. have a minimum GPA of 3.5 (or equivalent); and
6. submit an essay in Word or PDF describing their relationship with money in five-hundred (500) words or more.
Applications for the Scholarship can be submitted beginning on October 5, 2024.
The application deadline is 11:59PM Friday, October 3, 2025 (Atlantic Daylight Time).
All entries must be complete and are subject to verification by the Business, in its sole discretion.
The Scholarship will have a value of $2,000 CAD for a period of one (1) year, and may be used to cover cost of studies or to help the Scholarship recipient (the “Recipient”) start their personal finance journey.
The Recipient will be notified within three (3) business days of the deadline and will be contracted at the email address provided at the time of application.
The Business will undertake up to three (3) attempts to contact the Recipient within the timeline noted in paragraph 8 above. If the Recipient does not or cannot accept the Scholarship, for any reason, it may be forfeited and a new Recipient selected, at the sole discretion of the Business.
As a condition to being awarded the Scholarship, the Recipient will be responsible for completing a release form to:
1. confirm compliance with all Scholarship Terms and Conditions;
2. agree to accept the Scholarship as awarded;
3. release, discharge and hold harmless the Business, its related and affiliated companies, marketing partners, and each of their respective directors, officers, employees, shareholders, successors, sponsors, partners, licenses, subsidiaries, agents, artists, advisors, assignees, and all others associated with the administration, development and execution of the Scholarship (the “Released Parties”) from any and against any and all manner of action, cause of action, claim or demand, loss or injury, use or misuse of the Scholarship, suit, debt, including legal fees and expenses, whatsoever, including but not limited to, failure of any third-party in connection with any aspect of the Scholarship to perform or deliver any goods or services, any act of God or any event beyond the Released Parties’ control, any dissatisfaction of any kind by the Recipient with any aspect of the Scholarship; and
4. indemnify the Released Parties against any loss, damage or expense, including legal fees, that any of the Released Parties may suffer or incur as a result of any non- compliance by the Recipient with any of these Scholarship Terms and Conditions or participation in the Scholarship application process and/or in connection with the acceptance of the Scholarship.
The Business is not responsible for:
1. incorrect or inaccurate entry information that may affect a person’s ability to participate in the Scholarship application process or be awarded the Scholarship, including but not limited to human error, technical malfunctions, lost or delayed applications for any reasons, mail failures, omissions, or any combination thereof, and entries that fail to comply with these Scholarship Terms and Conditions;
2. technical failures of any kind, including but not limited to malfunctions, interruptions, or disconnections in phone lines or network hardware or software;
3. any injury to Applicant’s computers or to any other individuals computer related to or resulting from participating in, or downloading any material regarding the Scholarship or accepting the Scholarship;
4. any injury or damage to persons or property which may be caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from an Applicant’s participation in the Scholarship application process or receipt or use or misuse of the Scholarship;
5. the security or privacy of information transmitted via computer networks or for breaches of privacy due to interference by third-party computer hackers or otherwise; or
6. late, lost, misdirected or unsuccessful efforts to notify a potential Recipient or for the failure of the Business to receive the Recipient’s response, either their rejection or acceptance of the Scholarship.
The Recipient will be announced on or before Friday, October 24, 2025.
Without limiting the foregoing, if, for any reason, the Scholarship cannot be awarded as originally planned for any reason, the Business reserves the right, it its sole discretion, to modify, amend, or cancel the Scholarship at any time without notice. The Business shall have full discretion to decide all questions regarding the awarding of the Scholarship and the administration of these Scholarship Terms and Conditions. Applicants shall have no claim against the Business on the basis of the failure to award the Scholarship, or the Business’s evaluation of applications.
The Scholarship may be terminated at anytime by the Business upon the occurrence of any behaviour on the part of the Recipient that the Business, in its sole discretion, deems inappropriate, including but not limited to any misconduct.
The Recipient is responsible for informing themselves of the tax consequences of receiving the Scholarship.

2019 scholarship winner: Jennifer Lee

The first ever recipient of the creditcardGenius was Jennifer Lee, a Bachelor of Commerce and Technology Management student at Athabasca University.

Her fierce commitment to success stood out to us, brought home by this quote from her submission:

2020 scholarship winner: Ariane Freynet-Gagné

In 2020, the creditcardGenius scholarship went to Ariane Freynet-Gagné, a 5th year student at the University of Manitoba.

Ariane is a proud francophone pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Psychology. At the time of the scholarship, she was hoping to pursue a graduate degree in Community Psychology.

As she states:

"For my Master's, I want to study collective resilience, particularly in the face of environmental catastrophe. Resilience implies adversity, and the climate crisis will bring us just that. I hope to build on existing literature and find ways to measure collective resilience, in order to find ways to best increase it."

2021 scholarship winner: Arshdeep Sarpal

For 2021, the creditcardGenius scholarship winner was Arshdeep Sarpal from Winnipeg.

Arshdeep is a pre-med student at the University of Winnipeg. He looks to combine his knowledge in IT and cybersecurity with his interests in medical technologies. Together, he hopes he can aquire "the ability to help and even save lives."

2022 scholarship winner: Z. Wolf

The 4th winner of the creditcardGenius scholarship is Z. Wolf, a Master's student at the University of Winnipeg.

Currently studying planetary science, she is a student collaborator with NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab conducting research on Earth that is used for comparison against Mars data. Next year marks the beginning of her PhD studies in the US, and she hopes to either continue her work with NASA after graduation or become a professor of her own research group.

"I hope to inspire other women to pursue STEM degrees as the possibilities are endless and so exciting. The space industry is evolving and there is a need for people with diverse backgrounds to participate to ensure continued advancement."

2023 scholarship winner: Daniel Gardner

Daniel Gardner is the deserving winner of the 2023 creditcardGenius scholarship. He is a full-time Aviation Technician student studying at the Centre for Aviation Technology at Hamilton International Airport.

Determined and hardworking, Daniel has faced many setbacks over the course of his professional life including unlucky timing with his salon business that he expanded shortly before COVID hit. But now that he's discovered his passion for aviation, he's laser focused on seeing his dream through.

"I really want to see this through, I want to continue my education and finally enjoy the career I have been trying to find for the past 5 years. I finally found my chance to do something that I feel is worth doing my entire life. I haven’t been in a mentally happier time in my life then I am right now."

2024 scholarship winner: Tyla-Jane Jackson

Tyla-Jane Jackson is the recipient of our 2024 creditcardGenius scholarship. She is a second-year student at Laurentian University and pursuing her Bachelor of Science in kinesiology.

While Tyla-Jane has faced numerous challenges and setbacks to achieving her education, her resourcefulness and determination have prevailed. She feels that these experiences have equipped her with the skills and strength to overcome future challenges.

"My goal is to become a teacher, and I see my education as a stepping stone toward creating positive change in my life. I am focused on building a successful and happy future, and I believe this academic journey is the right direction for me to achieve that."

Is the scholarship open to undergraduate students?

The creditcardGenius scholarship is open to undergraduate students, as long as they are in their second year of study.

Is the scholarship open to graduate students?

All graduate students are welcome to apply for our scholarship, regardless of year of study.

What are the requirements to be eligible for the scholarship?

To be eligible for the creditcardGenius scholarship, you'll need to meet these requirements:

attending a Canadian university or College,
in at least your 2nd year of studies,
minimum GPA of 3.5, and
be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada.

^◊ The creditcardGenius algorithm, based on our Rating Methodology, calculates an estimated dollar value for all rewards and bonuses by combining typical monthly spending with well-researched reward point value estimates. "Annual Rewards" is calculated by combining our default $2,000 in monthly spending ($24,000 annually) spread across 8 different spending categories (gas, groceries, travel, etc) with our point value estimates. "Welcome Bonus" is calculated by combining all one-time bonuses available to new cardholders within the first year with our point value estimates. To qualify for the full bonus you may need to make purchases, meet minimum spending requirements, or complete special actions. "Annual Interest Savings" is based on a credit card balance of $8,000 and a standard credit card interest rate of 19.99%.
