“Rogers” probably isn’t the first name you think of when it comes to credit cards, but the Rogers Platinum and Rogers Fido Mastercards have both been making a bit of a name for themselves these days.
The new found appreciation for these cards comes largely from the fact that they are some of the ONLY cards on the Canadian Market right now that keep you from paying through the nose on purchases made in a foreign currency.
That being said, however, on May 23rd, 2018, there are some changes coming and it’s up to you to decide if one of these two cards is still one you want in your wallet.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the changes:

Rogers Platinum Mastercard
Here is a quick glance of the changes you can expect for the Rogers Platinum Mastercard:
- Earn rate has been has been reduced from 1.75% cash back on all purchases to 1.25%.
- Earn rate on foreign currency purchases has been reduced from 4% cash back to 3%.
- Now cardholders can earn 2% cash back on Rogers products, including Rogers, Fido, or chatr monthly bills.
- This card now has no annual fee.
Rogers Fido Mastercard
- Earn rate has been has been reduced from 1.5% cash back on all purchases to 1.25%.
- Earn rate on foreign currency purchases has been reduced from 4% cash back to 3%.
- Now cardholders can earn 2% cash back on Rogers products, including Rogers, Fido, or chatr monthly bills.
- Welcome bonus has been reduced from $50 in cash back rewards to $25.
As you can see, the changes aren’t really major, but they do make a difference.
One of the most noteworthy things about these cards, was that it gave you 4% on foreign transactions, but coming May you’ll only be getting 3% on those same purchases. After you subtract your 2.5% foreign currency exchange fee, you’ll still be netting a 0.5% return (which is better than nothing)… but it’s never fun to lose out on an extra 1% back.
The next notable thing is that both cards will now be no fee cards, and both will offer the same cash back percentage on all everyday purchases – 1.25%. This is another drop, but even with this decrease, these are still two of the best no fee cash back cards on the market right now.
One area where these cards have changed for the better, is if you are a Rogers (or Rogers Partner) customer. 2% cash back on all Rogers products (including your Rogers, Fido, or chatr bills) is a pretty nice return, making these cards even better if you have any Rogers services.
How are the Rogers and Fido Cards Different Now?
The answer is they aren’t very different at all. They are now practically mirror images of each other but are being targeted separately at the Fido and Rogers customer bases.
There is one minor advantage for the Rogers card in that your rewards can also be redeemed for Toronto Blue Jays tickets, concessions at the Rogers Centre, and a few extra places that the Fido card doesn’t offer. Most people will either be paying their bill from one of the Rogers brands or taking a once-a-year statement credit though, making the difference rather insignificant.
