“Rogers” probably isn’t the first name you think of when it comes to credit cards, but the Rogers Platinum and Rogers Fido Mastercards have both been making a bit of a name for themselves these days.

The new found appreciation for these cards comes largely from the fact that they are some of the ONLY cards on the Canadian Market right now that keep you from paying through the nose on purchases made in a foreign currency.

That being said, however, on May 23rd, 2018, there are some changes coming and it’s up to you to decide if one of these two cards is still one you want in your wallet.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the changes:

Rogers Platinum Mastercard

Here is a quick glance of the changes you can expect for the Rogers Platinum Mastercard:

  • Earn rate has been has been reduced from 1.75% cash back on all purchases to 1.25%.
  • Earn rate on foreign currency purchases has been reduced from 4% cash back to 3%.
  • Now cardholders can earn 2% cash back on Rogers products, including Rogers, Fido, or chatr monthly bills.
  • This card now has no annual fee.

Rogers Fido Mastercard

  • Earn rate has been has been reduced from 1.5% cash back on all purchases to 1.25%.
  • Earn rate on foreign currency purchases has been reduced from 4% cash back to 3%.
  • Now cardholders can earn 2% cash back on Rogers products, including Rogers, Fido, or chatr monthly bills.
  • Welcome bonus has been reduced from $50 in cash back rewards to $25.

As you can see, the changes aren’t really major, but they do make a difference.

One of the most noteworthy things about these cards, was that it gave you 4% on foreign transactions, but coming May you’ll only be getting 3% on those same purchases. After you subtract your 2.5% foreign currency exchange fee, you’ll still be netting a 0.5% return (which is better than nothing)… but it’s never fun to lose out on an extra 1% back.

The next notable thing is that both cards will now be no fee cards, and both will offer the same cash back percentage on all everyday purchases – 1.25%. This is another drop, but even with this decrease, these are still two of the best no fee cash back cards on the market right now.

One area where these cards have changed for the better, is if you are a Rogers (or Rogers Partner) customer. 2% cash back on all Rogers products (including your Rogers, Fido, or chatr bills) is a pretty nice return, making these cards even better if you have any Rogers services.

How are the Rogers and Fido Cards Different Now?

The answer is they aren’t very different at all. They are now practically mirror images of each other but are being targeted separately at the Fido and Rogers customer bases.

There is one minor advantage for the Rogers card in that your rewards can also be redeemed for Toronto Blue Jays tickets, concessions at the Rogers Centre, and a few extra places that the Fido card doesn’t offer. Most people will either be paying their bill from one of the Rogers brands or taking a once-a-year statement credit though, making the difference rather insignificant.

Other options to Consider

If Rogers changes have left you wondering about some replacement options, here are a few cards to consider:

Do you just update your old blogs randomly? All this information is completely out of date and the card was changed again.

Hey Dave, We've updated the comparison credit cards recently, and added a callout at the top of the page saying that the Rogers details are old news. That callout also provides a link to the up-to-date Rogers changes, if you're interested.

Hey Robert, It's actually only the TD Access foreign transactions that are going from 2.5% to 3.5% – one more reason to use your credit card over your debit card. But we are DEFINITELY hoping that credit card companies do not follow suit.

I’ve been a loyal Rogers MasterCard holder since its early days, and this is indeed disappointing news. Important to remind readers of another major disadvantage on this card: no purchase protection or extended warranty coverage, as most cards have.

Hey Rick. It's true, this announcement is definitely disappointing. And you're right, these cards lack even the most basic insurance... which is really unfortunate.

I got the Fido master card as soon as i read that the Amazon branded card was coming to an end as i wanted to have a card that provided good cashback on foriegn exchage and I am as well a Fido Customer. I pay my Fido bills with the card and so I like the idea of getting 2% off my bills with cashback rewards going directly towards my Fido bills. Its to bad they went from 1.5% cash back to 1.25% cash back and this will impact they way I use the card as I have other cards that pay better. Are their any other cards in Canada that give good cashback on foriegn exchange? (preferably no fee)? As this is the main reason that I got the Amazon card and then the Fido card. Thanks

Hi there Marpy. :) It's true, if you're a Rogers customer, that 2% cash back on Rogers services is a nice benefit. But this card is getting worse and worse if you're not a Rogers subscriber. Be sure to check out our Canadian Credit Cards With No Foreign Transaction Fee blog post to find the best no fx fee cards on the market.. and we are always keeping it up to date with the latest information, so keep checking back.

With this new change coming soon, it just gives me one more reason to cancel. I have had the Rogers card for a number of years when it was still the zero foreign transaction fee. I didn't like the change when they got rid of that, so have been thinking about cancelling it for a while, and now this. I have never had to pay an annual fee for this card anyways, so I really don't see much benefit of keeping it unless I use it strictly for foreign transactions only. There are many other much better cards to use for regular transactions. Time to get a new no fee card to pair with.

Oh, wow, this is an unpleasant surprise. Losing 0.5% is pretty significant over the year. And losing a full 1% for foreign currency purchases means I will likely make my HomeTrust Preferred Visa my go to card in those cases. And will be reevaluating my other card options for domestic purchase. May remain with Rogers MC but will check the options for sure.

How are you finding things with the Home Trust card so far Keith? We're receiving a lot of complaints about lack of communication and customer service because of how overwhelmed they are right now. Is the day to day transacting been smooth?

I got the Rogers card last November for n anticipation of Chase withdrawing from Canada. When I started reading your article, the first thing came to mind is “cancel”...but when I read that it will change to no Annual fee, I changed my mind and will keep. Later in the year, I will look at the new Scotia Passport and then decide if apply and get rid of Rogers ( I recognize they are not comparable, I am just looking at conversion fee aspect)

Yes, it's quite a surprise for us as well. I actually just applied and was approved for a Rogers Mastercard so it's unfortunate that I didn't even get my card activated before these devaluations were announced. Still a very solid no fee cash back card though.

Hi Stephen, I keep receiving emails from Rogers that I have been Pre Approved for the Rogers Platinum Mastercard. I had the Amazon.ca Visa with no foreign currency conversion fee. Should I wait for the Rogers World Elite Mastercard to launch in May or apply for the Platinum Masteracard? What are your thoughts on this?

You can probably upgrade after the fact, but I'd probably just wait so you don't have to bother with yet another card number and the extra hassle of switching cards twice.
