Accuracy is important to us so this article has gone through a thorough 3-stage review process and fact-checked by our team.

MyMcDonald's Rewards is the most straightforward and rewarding loyalty program in Canada. Hungry shoppers earn 100 points for every $1 spent at McDonald's, whether at a kiosk, at the front counter, in a drive-thru, or on the mobile app. Then, you can redeem your points for food, drinks, and dessert.

You can redeem your points at varying levels, and you might be surprised to learn that the highest point value is actually found at the lowest redemption tier.

We'll explain why cashing in 2,000 points for a medium-sized specialty coffee drink is actually better than saving up for higher-price-tag items. Plus, we'll suggest the best credit cards to use the next time you swing by the golden arches.

Key Takeaways

  • MyMcDonald’s Rewards is the official rewards program of McDonald’s Canada.
  • MyMcDonald’s Rewards Points are worth up to 0.23 cents each, but you’ll usually get about 0.1 cent in value.
  • There are 5 MyMcDonald’s Rewards categories, covering dozens of menu items and costing 2,000–14,000 points apiece.

What are MyMcDonald's Rewards?

The MyMcDonald’s Rewards program is McDonald’s Canada’s official rewards program. Members can earn points on almost every McDonald’s purchase.

Members collect 100 points for every $1 spent on eligible delivery, drive-thru, in-store, kiosk, mobile, and pick-up orders.

The program is free to join for Canadians aged 14 and up. Once you've collected enough points, you can redeem them for your favourite menu items – from snacks and drinks to meals and treats – through the McDonald's app.

Pros:

  • 1,400+ McDonald's restaurants in Canada
  • Hundreds of menu items, with new updates every year
  • 100 MyMcDonald's Rewards Points per $1 spent
  • 5 rewards categories
  • Points worth up to 0.23 cents each
  • Accepts American Express, Mastercard, and Visa credit cards
  • Bonuses and promotional offers
  • Free membership

Cons:

  • Points worth as little as 0.05 cents each
  • Limited redemption options
  • No official credit card
  • No points for bag, cup, or bottle fees; delivery fees, service fees, or tips
  • Points expire in 6 months

What are points worth?

There are 5 MyMcDonald's Rewards categories available in the app (more on that later). For a fixed cost, you can redeem your points for your choice of several menu items, yielding an average of 0.1 cents per point (CPP):

McDonald's menu prices vary from location to location, but the results still hold true: The most valuable reward is a medium latte or cappuccino, and you should avoid most items in the 6,000 and 10,000-point categories.

We got our results using a calculator, McDonald's menu pricing, and the following formula:

Cost of reward in $ / cost of reward in points x 100 = value in cents per point (CPP)

To maximize the value of your points, redeem them often – and try to choose the most expensive options in each category. Just remember, you can't redeem points on delivery fees!

McDonald's rewards calculator

As the previous table shows, your point value really depends on how much your reward item costs and the number of points it requires.

To quickly see the value of your points when you cash in for some popular menu items, enter the number you want to redeem into our MyMcDonald's rewards calculator.

How to earn MyMcDonald's Rewards points

MyMcDonald's members earn 100 points for every $1 spent, regardless of how they make their orders. To start collecting points, download the McDonald's app, log in, and click the square icon to get your membership code.

Next:

  • Order in-store by scanning your code at the front counter
  • Order in a drive-thru by providing your code when you order
  • Order at a kiosk by scanning your code before payment
  • Place a delivery or pick-up order through the McDonald's app

McDonald's delivery orders in Canada are fulfilled by DoorDash, UberEats, and SkipTheDishes.

Keep an eye out for bonus points and rewards in the McDonald's app by turning on push notifications.

How to redeem points

Once you've collected 2,000 points, head to the McDonald's app and tap "Rewards and Offers" at the bottom of the screen.

Using the McDonald's app to see offers and redeem points

On the "My Rewards" page, you'll see a list of all the menu items available with your current points balance, organized by reward categories. You can redeem your points in one of 2 ways:

  • Add to mobile order: Tap the reward you want, add it to your mobile order, and proceed to order for delivery or pick-up. Your chosen item will be included for free.
  • Use at restaurant: Tap the reward you want, select "Use at restaurant," and provide the code on your screen the next time you visit a McDonald's drive-thru, front counter, or kiosk.

Supersize your rewards with restaurant credit cards

Unfortunately, McDonald's doesn't offer an official co-branded credit card. But you can use your favourite rewards credit card for every purchase! Then you'll earn both MyMcDonald's points and credit card rewards.

FAQ

How do you redeem MyMcDonald's Rewards?

You can redeem MyMcDonald's Rewards Points on the McDonald's app by tapping "Rewards and Offers" at the bottom of the screen. Then, add the reward to your mobile order or redeem it in person at a restaurant.

How many MyMcDonald's Rewards Points do you need for a Big Mac?

A Big Mac costs 10,000 MyMcDonald's Rewards Points, while a Big Mac Extra Value Meal costs 14,000. When we crunched the point values, we found splurging on the extra value meal offered a better return on your points.

What can you get for 6,000 MyMcDonald's Points?

For 6,000 Rewards Points, you can get a free Egg, Bacon, or Sausage McMuffin, Junior Chicken, McDouble sandwich, Snack Size McFlurry, large fries, large Frappé, large refresher beverage (if available at your location), or a smoothie. Large fries or a large Frappé gets you the most value.

Do MyMcDonald's Points expire?

MyMcDonald's Rewards Points expire on the first day of the month, 6 months after they were earned. Keep an eye on when you earned your points, so you get a chance to redeem them before they disappear. Remember: you can get the best value at 2,000 points, so you don't need to save up.

Can you redeem MyMcDonald's Points twice in one day?

There's no limit on how many MyMcDonald's Points you can redeem in one day, but mobile orders are subject to a 20-item or $75 limit. Remember, your most valuable redemption opportunities are for medium lattes or cappuccinos at the 2,000-point redemption level.

Can you earn McDonald's rewards on merchandise purchases such as the socks offered during McHappy days?

Hey Carmen,

You generally earn rewards on food orders, and according to McDonald's customer service, McHappy Day socks don't count as an eligible purchase. If you want, you can reach out to McDonald's to double check either online or by calling 1-888-424-4622.
