BMO eclipse rise Visa Card review
If you're looking for a full featured no annual fee credit card, the BMO eclipse rise Visa Card is a card to take a closer look at.
It has everything you might want in a no fee card, with one big downside to take into consideration. Here's what it offers.
Earning BMO Rewards with the BMO eclipse rise Visa Card
The BMO eclipse rise Visa Card is a member of the BMO Rewards program. As the no annual fee member of the BMO eclipse family, here's what it earns for rewards on purchases:
- 5 BMO Rewards points for every $2 spent on dining, groceries, and reccurring bills
- 1 point per $2 spent on all other purchases
If you spend $2,000 per month on various categories, that would earn you 31,200 points per year.
Redeeming your BMO Rewards points
What can you use your points for? With BMO Rewards, you have a few options. Here's the full summary.
You have a couple of options to snag the best value. You can simply charge any travel purchase to your card, then use your points to pay for it afterwards.
You can also have them deposited into a BMO investment account if you happen to have one.
Either way, your 31,200 points are worth up to $209, for an average return of 0.87%.
6 pros to the BMO eclipse rise Visa Card
There are some solid pros to the BMO eclipse rise Visa Card.
1. Annual bonus rewards when you pay your bill on time
If you're the kind of person who pays their bill in full and on time, BMO has a nice little bonus for you.
When you do that for 12 consecutive months, BMO will give you a free 2,500 bonus points. Those are worth up to $16.75.
2. Annual bonus when you redeem points for statement credits
There's a second annual bonus if you redeem your points for statement credits. Redeem 12,000 points in a year for statement credits, and you'll get 2,500 bonus points.
As seen above, statement credits give you less value. But is it worth using 12,000 points to get that bonus? 12,000 points are worth $60 in statement credits. But when redeemed for travel, they're worth $80, a difference of $20.
2,500 points are worth up to $17, so it's really a wash.
If you're going to redeem for statement credits, you'll get a nice little boost in rewards. But if you're going for travel, it's not worth the hassle of redeeming points for cash.
3. Balance transfer offer
If you have an existing credit card balance that you're having trouble paying off, the BMO eclipse rise Visa Card is here to help. It comes with a balance transfer offer of 0.99% for 9 months, with a 2% transfer fee.
It's one of the best balance transfer offers out there.
4. Mobile device insurance
Mobile device insurance is becoming a more and more common insurance, protecting a device that goes everywhere.
But it's rare to find a no fee card. And this card just happens to be one of them providing up to $1,000 in coverage.
5. A welcome bonus
There is a decent welcome bonus with this card – up to 20,000 points. You'll earn those 20,000 points after spending $1,500 in the first 3 months.
They're worth $134 when redeemed for travel.
6. Available to newcomers and new to credit
One last feature – if you've never had a credit product before or are a newcomer to Canada, there's a version of this card for you.
It's one card you can look at if you want to start building your credit file in Canada.
1 con to the BMO eclipse rise Visa Card
There's one major con to consider when looking at the BMO eclipse rise Visa Card. In this case, it has to do with the rewards.
The rewards on the bonus categories are good. But the same can't be said for the base earn rate.
Since each point is worth a maximum of 0.67 cents, earning 1 point for every $2 spent only gives a return of 0.335%. It brings down an otherwise sterling card.
