The biggest jump for many Canadians is on flights to Asia. Business class in the 7,501 – 11,00-mile band is increasing from 87,500 to 102,500 Aeroplan points one way. That covers many routes from Toronto to Vancouver to destinations like Tokyo or Seoul.

Flights to Europe are also getting more expensive, in many cases. For example, first class seats between North America and Europe in the 4,001-6,000-mile range are rising from 100,000 to 120,000 points one way – a 20% jump.

While these hikes are more common in the higher-end cabins, economy cabins are being hit, too. An economy seat from Europe to Asia in the 5,001–7,000 category (think, London to Bangkok) will now cost 60,000 points, which is a 20% increase from the previous price of 50,000 points.

That said, there are a few bright spots. Shorter economy flights between North America and Europe are dropping from 35,000 points to 32,500 points. A few long-distance economy routes to Asia are dropping as well.

What this means if you want to book flights with Aeroplan points

If you're saving Aeroplan points for a big trip, timing matters. Booking before June 1 lets you lock in current pricing, even if you won't actually be travelling until later in the year. The biggest impact is on travellers planning long-haul or premium cabin flights.

Shorter flights within North America are less affected. Many economy flights are still priced close to where they were before, so casual travellers may not notice a big change.
