If you’re a movie goer, you probably have a Cineplex SCENE card in your wallet.
And it’s a no brainer card to have – see 10 movies, get the next one free.
But, on April 30th, 2021, that’s about to change.

Earn 5 points per $1 spent at Cineplex theatres
Cineplex is changing how you earn points on movie tickets.
Currently, here’s what you earn for points on movies. How many points you earn depends on the type of movie you go to see.
| Movie Type | Points Earned (old system) |
|---|---|
| General Admission & 3D movies | 125 |
| Enhanced Movie (UltraAVX, IMAX, D-BOX) | 200 |
| VIP Movie | 250 |
But now, it’s moving to a more streamlined system. You’ll earn 5 points for every $1 spent on movie tickets (excluding tax).
But while simpler, you’ll ultimately earn fewer points on movie tickets.
Here’s an example of what you could earn now. This will vary by location. And as the price of tickets increases or decreases, so too will the number of points earned.
| Movie Type | Ticket Price | Points Earned |
|---|---|---|
| General Admission | $11 | 55 |
| 3D | $14 | 70 |
| UltraAVX | $16 | 80 |
| IMAX | $18 | 90 |
| D-BOX | $21 | 105 |
| VIP Movie | $17 | 85 |
That’s less than stellar, and a far cry from what you would have earned before. The old rule of “see 10 movies, get the next free” is no more.
One plus – you can earn points on the total transaction. Right now, if you purchase multiple tickets, you need to scan multiple SCENE cards to get all the points.
But when the change happens, one SCENE card can earn points for all tickets purchased.
And that’s all that’s changing. How you redeem points is the same, as is earning points on concessions and at restaurant partners.

What about the Scotiabank SCENE Visa?
Have the
Well, since how you redeem points isn’t changing, there are no changes as to what points are worth. And that means there’s nothing for you to worry about.
You’re still earning the same number of points on purchases:
- 5 points per $1 spent at Cineplex, and
- 1 point per $1 spent everywhere else.
And it still has no annual fee.
Your turn
It’s not great to see a devaluation, and in this case there’s not much we can do about it, as Cineplex is the dominant movie chain in Canada.
