Servus No Fee Mastercard review
The Servus No Fee Mastercard is a no-frills, no fee Mastercard from Servus Credit Union that earns Servus Circle Rewards and comes with some basic travel insurance.
In this article, we'll go over some of the pros and cons, as well as an alternative if you don't live in Alberta.
Pros of the Servus No Fee Mastercard
The Servus No Fee Mastercard is a basic Mastercard with few benefits and perks. That being said, there are some good things to look forward to if you choose to get one.
1. Earn rewards on purchases
The Servus No Fee Mastercard earns 1 point per $2 spent on all purchases. With each point worth 1 point each, that means you'll get 0.5% in rewards.
It’s not the highest earn rate but it's certainly better than nothing. Plus, there are no caps to how much you can earn and the points will never expire.
2. No annual fee
You can rest assured that you won't be spending any money on an annual fee, even if the rewards aren't stellar.
3. Basic insurance coverage
The Servus No Fee Mastercard comes with 2 types of insurance: travel accident and baggage delay. The $100,000 of coverage for travel accidents is lower than average – but with a no fee credit card, something is better than nothing.
Cons of the Servus No Fee Mastercard
The Servus No Fee Mastercard has one major drawback and one smaller one.
1. Only available to Alberta residents
The biggest caveat to getting a Servus credit card is that they're only offered in Alberta. There are no physical branches elsewhere, either.
2. Perks and rewards are comparatively low
Other no annual fee credit cards are much more rewarding. A return of 0.5% isn't much to write home about when a card like the American Express Green Card can get you up to 2% back on purchases.
How does it stack up to another no fee Mastercard?
Here's how the Servus No Fee Mastercard compares with one of our top-rated Mastercards, the MBNA Rewards Platinum Plus Mastercard.
| Servus No Fee Mastercard | MBNA Rewards Platinum Plus Mastercard | |
|---|---|---|
| Rewards | * 1 point per $2 spent on all purchases | * 2 points for every $1 spent on restaurants, groceries, and select recurring bills (up to $10,000 spent annually per category) * 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases |
| Welcome bonus | None | 10,000 after spending $500 in the first 90 days and signing up for paperless e-statements |
| Features | * 2 types of insurance | * Birthday bonus of 10% of your total points earned * 3 types of insurance |
In pretty much every category, the MBNA Rewards Platinum Plus Mastercard comes out on top. Aside from having a substantial welcome bonus worth up to $100, the big thing is its everyday earn rates. With each point worth up to 1 cent each, you can earn 2% back on 3 popular categories.
