Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite review
For a premium travel credit card that offers more than just rewards, the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite could be right up your alley.
It comes with a valuable blend of perks, insurance, flexible rewards, and one of the rarest features of all – no foreign exchange fees – which really makes it stand out as a travel credit card.
Here's everything this credit card has to offer.
Earning rewards with the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite
With the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite, you'll be earning Scene+ points on all your purchases.
Earning rewards on purchases
So what will you earn on purchases? Here's how many points you'll earn:
- 3 Scene+ points per $1 spent at Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo and more
- 2 Scene+ points per $1 spent on groceries, restaurants, entertainment, and daily transit
- 1 Scene+ point per $1 on all other purchases
But there's more if you're a big spender. When you spend $40,000 per year on this card, you'll get a 10,000 point bonus. For every $10,000 you spend above that, you'll get 2,000 bonus points.
And finally – the welcome bonus. You'll earn up to 35,000 points after spending $2,000 in the first 3 months.
Redeeming your Scotiabank Rewards points
So what can you use your points for? You'll be earning Scene+ points, which are some of the most flexible you'll find.
The best value for your points is by redeeming for travel. You can book any travel you like, either through Scene+ and Expedia or with any provider. Travel redemptions will give your points a value of 1 cent each.
Of course, as with many rewards programs, there's more than just one way to use your points.
Here's the summary on the value of your points for each type of redemption.
For everything you need to know about Scene+, our guide is here to help you navigate the program.
4 benefits to the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite
On top of earning rewards, here are 4 other reasons to like the Passport Visa Infinite.
1. No foreign exchange fees
The biggest benefit to this card? Not charging any foreign exchange fees. You'll save the usual 2.5% over what other cards typically charge when you make a purchase in a currency other than CAD.
If you shop frequently outside of Canada, this alone will give you some good savings. For every $1,000 you spend, you're keeping $25 in your own pocket.
2. Visa Airport Companion membership and 6 free passes
For the air traveller, this card gives you a complimentary Visa Airport Companion membership along with 6 free passes. You'll be able to relax in style and comfort while waiting at an airport for your next flight.
Visa Airport Companion has over 1,200 lounges worldwide, so it shouldn't be too hard to find one on your next journey.
3. Top-notch insurance
The insurance provided by this card is outstanding.
It comes with 11 different types of insurance coverages, including one that is hard to find.
While many include emergency medical coverage, most of them stop offering it when you reach the age of 65. Getting medical coverage at age 75 and older is even rarer.
Luckily, this card covers you no matter your age. You'll get 3 days of coverage if you're over 65, including anyone older than 75. The only requirement is that you have no pre-existing conditions for the previous year.
For more details on what's covered, head to the insurance coverage section above.
4. Easy to earn welcome bonus
And finally – there's an easy to earn welcome bonus. You'll earn 35,000 points after spending $2,000 in the first 3 months.
Those 35,000 points are worth $350 when redeemed for travel.
2 downsides to the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite
Of course, it's not perfect (like most things in life). Here are 2 things you'll want to consider.
1. Not the greatest rewards
The biggest downside is how many rewards you actually earn. Based on a typical $2,000 monthly spend, you're only looking at a return of 1.3%, lower than other premium cards.
So you have to value the other features of this card to make it worthwhile.
2. High income requirements
The only other negative is the income requirements.
It's a Visa Infinite card, so you need to have either a personal income of $60,000 or a household income of $100,000 to qualify.

Here's the comparison between these 2 credit cards.
| Feature | Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite | Scotiabank Gold American Express |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome bonus | 35,000 points (terms) | 50,000 points (terms) |
| Annual fee | $150 | $120 |

* 3 Scene+ points per $1 spent at Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo and more * 2 Scene+ points per $1 spent on groceries, restaurants, entertainment, and daily transit * 1 Scene+ point per $1 on all other purchases |
* 6 Scene+ points per $1 spent at Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo and more * 5 Scene+ points per $1 spent on groceries, dining, and entertainment * 3 Scene+ points per $1 spent on gas, select streaming services, and transit * 1 Scene+ point per $1 spent on foreign currency purchases * 1 Scene+ point per $1 spent on all other purchases |
| Insurance coverages | 11 types | 12 types |
| Special features | * Visa Infinite benefits * Complimentary Visa Airport Companion membership, plus 6 annual lounge visits * No foreign exchange fees * Spend $40,000 per year on your card and receive 10,000 bonus Scene+ Points. |
* Amex Offers * Amex Front Of The Line * No foreign exchange fees |
| Income requirements | * Personal: $60,000 * Household: $100,000 |
* Personal: $12,000 |
Which credit card is better depends on what you value more – rewards or perks. They offer similar levels of insurance coverage, and both charge no foreign exchange fees.
If you want more perks, the Passport Visa Infinite offers more of them, with the Visa Infinite perks and the lounge access.
But if you want more rewards, the Scotiabank Gold Amex is superior in this regard, earning up to 6 points per $1 spent on purchases, a much higher earn rate.
And of course, if Amex acceptance concerns you, the Visa Infinite card has no such concerns.
Bottom line
For perks and insurance, you've come to the right place, the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite has both. But, it's a little lacking in the rewards department.

My problem with this card is with their customer service. every time I have called Scotiabank to get some information, the wait time is in excess of 60 minutes. When I call scene plus travel to get information, they don’t have the information that I want. In particular, they say that you can redeem points for eligible travel purchase, but nowhere do they say what constitutes an eligible travel purchase. I called to ask whether a train ticket is an eligible travel purchase, and they don’t know. Their answer is to book 1st and see whether it is treated as an eligible travel purchase, afterwards. Not terribly helpful. And that is typical of their customer service.
This card is useless abroad. Your first payment attempt outside Canada will be rejected and the card will be locked. Spent hours on the phone just to unlock it and still can't use it abroad. It's a waste of time card.
note: we pay the $150 yearly fee and this card is mostly used for travel expenses only.
I agree with many other users - this card randomly gets rejected and usually for travel related purchases. However, delays or rejections, when travelling or trying to purchase time sensitive tickets (plane/train tickets, attractions, dinner) are frustrating. Often we end up using another credit card which processes without a problem.
To be fair this seems mostly to happen when I am making purchases as I am the supplementary card holder and the 2 step authorization for my purchases cannot go to my cell phone or email as per customer service. So my spouse has to do the purchasing and the 2 step authorization to their contact info which is a bit less problematic.
The latest rejection has made me write this review. I was trying to buy air travel tickets online, economy x2, not even close to our limit. Purchase rejected but it took me a bit to realize the rejection was from the credit card, so I call customer service with my spouse present to speak to them as I am not primary card holder, 45 min later they finish assessing the purchase and agree to allow the payment of the transaction, they then tell me to start the air ticket purchase again (and now our preferred seats are not available) and only then do they send a text alert "Y" or "N" to my spouse. I cannot understand why the technology at the time of rejection a text alert could not be sent and more importantly send the text to me instead of the primary card holder. I would like to report that is all it took to buy tickets. Next morning, multiple calls from fraud, I ignore as it looks like spam but I decide to call them back to check as it is my card used for purchase and my name on the automated call that I finally answer after 3 calls. It took about 30 min to reach someone, but I'm the secondary card holder...so they cannot even talk to me. My spouse must call back to talk to someone, but they were at work. It took another 45 min later for my spouse to reach someone and sort it out on the phone but my spouse reports the hold on the card is released.
Also rejected in Mexico at the resort desk paying for remainder of resort bill, a few hundred dollars (the bulk of trip had been paid prior using the same card).
Also rejected last year in Italy paying for 10 euros of train tickets at a kiosk.
We have had the card for 2 years, I'm frustrated with my experience as the secondary card holder. I will decide after this trip. We have not used any of the other benefits but I have my concerns that any claim will be processed quickly or easily.
I have had zero problems with Card or Visa when I called with a problem. Worked a round North America no problems. I have had the card for 3 years and what I do not like is that they kept reducing the insurance amounts.
"Spend $40,000 per year on your card and receive 10,000 bonus Scene+."
"For every $10,000 you spend above $40,000 in a year, earn an additional 2,000 bonus Scene+ Points."
Never got these bonuses, opened up a case with scene lp and they will investigate, will update rating when they adjust my points. The card otherwise accumulates regular points fine.
