Our review
Just because you're a student, that doesn't mean you have to settle for a student card with no rewards. The Scotiabank Scene Visa wants to give students a chance to build their credit, while still enjoying the benefit of a earning rewards with every purchase.
Not only that, but because movies tickets are expensive and high margin, the points are actually worth more than many others. 1,250 SCENE points are worth at least $13 in free movies giving each point a 1 cent value as opposed to the usual 1 cent value.
With the price of movies getting higher and higher, being able to go for free is pretty appealing. The Student Scene Visa will do just that.
You'll also get 2X the points when you use your card at Sobeys, Safeway, and Cineplex owned theatres and on Cineplex.com. That jumps you up from a 1% return on spending, to a 2% return on spending. If you're a regular at the movies, keeping this card just for in-theater purchases is worth it because it doesn't have an annual fee.
You can also get free additional cards for your family members and just watch the free movies and popcorn roll in.
The Scotiabank Scene Visa for students will also give you up to 20% off at AVIS Rent A Car locations worldwide.
One downside. This card does not include any type of insurance, so that is definitely something to keep in mind.

Good for students or as a first card, but if you have any job at all keep it just for extra credit limit and get a better card for usage
This was my first credit card and I'm in the process of replacing it. The no fees and application process are fine, however I have no use for the rewards. As a vegetarian and a non-drinker, the pubs/restaurants are not for me; and I never go to the movies, even before the pandemic. Scotiabank customer service is fine, but dealing with SCENE has been a nightmare. I was frozen out of my account for 2 months while continually receiving email notifications about unauthorized/suspicious activity on my SCENE account. I kept reaching out to support to figure out the problem or reset my password and never got a reply, while the site's account recovery options kept forwarding me to dead links. I was so frustrated with SCENE that I went to the parent company Cineplex and had them unfreeze the account. I wish Scotiabank offered more useful rewards for students like cash back on groceries, rather than entertainment and travel rewards.
