Our Review

If you’re looking to earn more AIR MILES while making purchases for your business, the American Express AIR MILES Gold Business Card will let you (and your employees) rack up more miles, faster.

Welcome bonus

Straight off the top you have an opportunity to get 150 bonus AIR MILES Rewards Miles when you spend $1,000 on the card in the first 3 months. A great boost to get you started.

AIR MILES earn rate

After this initial bonus, you’ll earn:

  • 1 mile for every $15 spent while shopping at AIR MILES sponsors, and
  • 1 mile for every $20 spent everywhere else.

Better yet, you can double up when purchasing from participating AIR MILES sponsors across Canada, racking up double miles by using your American Express AIR MILES Gold Business Card as well as your regular AIR MILES Collector Card.

And every purchase made on any supplementary cards you give to your employees (which are also free) further adds to your AIR MILES rewards total.

With AIR MILES being one of Canada’s most popular loyalty programs, what’s not to love?

What you can do with your AIR MILES

The AIR MILES program currently gives you 8 ways to redeem your miles, with different average values per mile for each.

Our opinion is that the best way to redeem AIR MILES is on flights, where you’ll be getting a generous 17.2 cents per mile (CPM) on average. Other options include:

  • car rentals (16.2 CPM),
  • hotels (12.3 CPM),
  • vacation packages (11 CPM),
  • attractions (13.4 CPM)
  • concerts (21.6 CPM)
  • merchandise (7.7 CPM), and
  • cash rewards (10.5 CPM).

Choosing between Dream and Cash Miles

One of the most important decisions you’ll make when collecting AIR MILES is whether you’re going to collect them as Dream or Cash Miles. Once a mile is earned in either category, it can’t be transferred to the other, so this is a pretty key decision to make.

You can decide to earn all of 1 type or a combination of both, so there's still some flexibility if you’re not sure – and you can always change your preference down the road if you like.

Cash Miles can only be used for store discounts or cash vouchers, while Dream Miles can be used for everything else. It’s all up to you.

Extra Amex perks

Of course this is an American Express card, so there are a few other perks worth talking about.

First, the American Express AIR MILES Gold Business Card includes complimentary travel accident insurance coverage, up to $100,000 of accidental death and dismemberment insurance, so long as travel is purchased on your card. This includes coverage for supplementary cardholders as well.

And there’s more. This card also has:

  • no annual fee,
  • free supplementary cards for employees, and
  • works with any Interac bank machine in Canada, or ABMs around the world with the American Express logo.

Bottom line

If you have a small business and are a fan of AIR MILES, this is a great card to have in your wallet. Its simplicity and rewards are hard to beat, especially with no annual fee.
