Our Review

If you’re an AIR MILES collector looking for a basic card to use for your business, the American Express AIR MILES Business card may be one to consider.

Welcome bonus and AIR MILES earn rate

First off, you’ll get a bonus of 2,000 AIR MILES Reward Miles when you spend $5,000 in the first 3 months.

After that, you’ll earn 1 AIR MILE for every $10 spent at AIR MILES partners, and 1 AIR MILE for every $15 spent everywhere else. You can also double up your miles at AIR MILES partners combining this credit card with your AIR MILES collector card.

What you can do with your AIR MILES

There are currently 8 ways to redeem your miles, with differing average values per mile.

At a generous 17.2 cents per mile (CPM) on average, we believe that the best bang for your buck is to use your AIR MILES for flights within North America. Other ways to use them include:

  • car rentals (16.2 CPM),
  • hotels (12.3 CPM),
  • vacation packages (11 CPM),
  • attractions (13.4 CPM)
  • concerts (21.6 CPM)
  • merchandise (7.7 CPM), and
  • cash rewards (10.5 CPM).

Choosing between Dream and Cash Miles

When you sign up for AIR MILES, one key decision you have to make is whether you’re going to collect Dream miles, Cash miles, or a combination of the two. The trick is that once a mile is earned in either category it can’t be transferred to the other.

There is still some flexibility, however, in that you can change your miles collection preference later on if you like.

With this card you can get a 25% discount on business rewards if you use Dream miles for rewards from the AIR MILES For Business Rewards catalogue. Something to consider if you’re a small business owner.

Amex Small Business features

Amex business cards usually include a collection of features just for business, and this card is no exception. Business features include:

  • a spending limit that can automatically grow with you, giving you greater purchase power over time,
  • around the clock business servicing to help manage your account, and
  • automated expense reports to help simplify tax preparation and expense tracking.

Insurance coverage

Like many American Express cards, this includes extensive coverage for unexpected mishaps. These include:

Other Amex perks

As with many Amex cards, this card includes membership in the Front of the Line program, giving you early access to show and concert tickets before they’re put on sale to the general public.

Drawbacks

The $180 annual fee for this is relatively low compared to other Amex cards, but so are the features and benefits. Supplementary cards will put you back another $50 annually each, which feels a little high for a card that’s this simple.

Bottom line

All in all, this card is a decent choice for AIR MILES collectors who want a basic card for their business.

You won't get all the bells and whistles of other Amex business cards, but you also won't get a huge annual fee to worry about. Plus with decent insurance coverage and the ability to earn AIR MILES everywhere, this could be the card you want.
