Our Review

For flexible cash back rewards that puts you in control of how you earn your cash back, the Tangerine World Mastercard is a great no annual fee card to take a closer look at.

In fact, it's actually quite similar to its older brother, the , but with a few added features.

Here's everything you need to know about this card.

Earn rates

So how much cash do you earn with this card? Like Tangerine's other card, it uses a rare bonus category system that puts you in control of your earnings.

You get to choose 2 categories to earn 2% cash back in from a list of 10:

  • Gas,
  • Groceries,
  • Drugstores,
  • Recurring bills,
  • Hotels & motels,
  • Home improvement,
  • Furniture,
  • Restaurants,
  • Entertainment, and
  • Public transportation and parking.

Not only do you get to choose, but it even has some unique categories not found on other credit cards.

Best of all, if you deposit your rewards in a free Tangerine Savings Account, you can choose an additional category to earn 2% cash back in, for a total of 3 bonus categories.

All other purchases earn 0.5% cash back.

Welcome bonus

Want more? This card also has a great welcome bonus.

On your 2 (or 3) selected bonus categories, you can earn 4% cash back for the first 3 months, doubling your earn rate in these categories.

And we're also giving you a $75 Amazon e-Gift card when you apply for the card through our site and get approved. This promotion ends on January 31, 2020.

Other features

What else does this card have to offer?

Here's a listing of the other key features of this card.

Balance transfer option

Have some existing credit card debt?

You can take advantage of the balance transfer promotion of 1.95% for the first 6 months, which could help you save a ton on interest charges.

Just note that if you transfer a balance to this card, that you don't use it to pay for any new purchases. All your payments will go to the balance that has the lowest interest rate, meaning that all you new purchases will accumulate high interest charges.

Insurance coverage

For a no fee card, it does come with some pretty great insurance coverages. You can view the details by clicking on the insurance tab above.

The mobile device insurance in particular catches our eye. It's a rare insurance coverage to begin with, and even rarer on no fee cards.

How does mobile device insurance work? Simply charge the full cost of your device to the card. Or, if the plan covers the cost of the device, than pay for your plan using the card.

You'll be covered for up to $1,000 for the cost of a new phone, for a maximum coverage length of 2 years. The actual coverage amount is based on the price of your actual phone. However, every month the payout is subject to depreciation of 2%.

You can learn more about mobile device insurance here.

World Mastercard benefits

As a World Mastercard, you'll get access to some special benefits provided by Mastercard.

They are:

  • Access Mastercard Priceless cities, and
  • Mastercard World Experiences.

You can learn more about what they offer here.

Airport lounge access

Finally, if you want to relax before your flight, you can access airport lounges as part of Mastercard Airport Experiences by Loungekey.

There's over 1,000 airport lounges located around the world you'll be able to access. Just keep in mind you'll still have to pay $32 USD for every visit.

Downsides

Like most things in life, it's not perfect.

First, it comes with high annual income requirements – either $60,000 personal or $100,000 household. But since they're so similar, if you don't meet these requirements you can just apply for the and not lose anything but a few extra benefits.

The other is it only earns 0.5% on all purchases other than your bonus categories. But simply pair it with the right card, and you can earn 2% on your chosen categories, then use your other card for a better earn rate on everything else.

One option is the . You'll earn 1.25% cash back on all of your purchases, plus get access to great Amex perks.

If you would prefer a Mastercard, then the is another great option, which earns 1% cash back on every purchase.
