American Express AeroplanPlus Reserve review
Meet the American Express® AeroplanPlus®* Reserve Card ‒ if you’re willing to pay an annual fee of $899 for a credit card. Because like most things in life, you get what you pay for. And it's no different for this card.
But is it really worth the annual fee? Let's dive in.
Huge Aeroplan welcome bonus
Let's start with that welcome bonus, because it's a doozy.
First off, you'll earn 50,000 Aeroplan miles after spending $3,000 in the first 3 months. With an Aeroplan mile valued at 2.5 cents each on average when redeemed for flights, these miles are worth $1,250.
But that's not all. Spend $6,000 in the first 6 months, and you'll also receive a $200 Air Canada eGift card.
So, combined that makes this bonus worth a whopping $1,450.
Earn Aeroplan miles faster
On top of your welcome bonus, what will you earn on your purchases?
It's straightforward with this card:
- 1.25 miles per $1 on all purchases, and
- 2 mile per $1 on eligible Air Canada purchases.
What's an eligible Air Canada purchase? It's any Air Canada flight or Air Canada Vacations package booked directly through Air Canada OR American Express Travel Services.
Redeem more with your Aeroplan miles
So what can you use your Aeroplan miles for?
Well, for most people (if not everyone) flights are what you have in mind for using your miles. To no surprise, it's also the best way to redeem your miles as well.
The best value when redeeming your miles is for flights within North America, as well as business class seats to anywhere in the world. For flights within North America, you can expect an average mile value of 2.5 cents ‒ with a higher number for business class.
So when possible, use your miles for flights right here in our own continent, or save up and splurge on a business class seat.
Because most carriers in Star Alliance (including Air Canada) charge high taxes and fees on longer distance flights, and that cuts into your value. Europe is particularly bad, with an average value of less than 1 cent per mile.
There are other ways to redeem your miles as well. See all the other options listed in our ultimate Aeroplan guide.
5 top-notch Amex AeroplanPlus Reserve perks

Play your cards right, and in the first 2 years you could get 4 free flights, factoring in the 50,000 mile welcome bonus and this benefit.
